Make this a show for older teens / adults and go all-in on both the absurdist comedy as well as the batshit insanity and real life cruelty and you have "what if It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but with a dog?"
There's no easy way to say this, but if I have to live with this knowledge so do you: there are at least two fanfics publicly accessible online about a now college-aged Eddie turning back human and falling in love/getting in a relationship with his former owner Justin (who let us remember is at least 3 or 4 years younger than Eddie and used to be Eddie's victim).
I actually still think about this show regularly even though it's been more than 20 years since I've seen it. I think about it in the sense of waking up as a dog one day and only having one human boy to talk to. I also think a lot about the one episode where Eddie is trying really hard to be good but ends up biting a mailman because the mailman turns into a juicy steak in front of his eyes
And out of all the remakes nick has made and with how they love live action these days this is one show that could be remade and actually do really well.
This pairing WORKS. Also, I used to love this dumb show as a kid 😂 Lowkey an all-star cast in this episode! Brenda Song, Seth Green, THE MAN HIMSELF Danny Tamberelli. Good times!
