  • This is how I keep my water supply nice and cold even on the hottest California days, stop sucking in that lukewarm water that makes you want to avoid drinking altogether.

    I just fill my 3 L bladder with ice cubes just before I leave the house for a day hike. At my normal rate of water use, the cubes are gone and the water is still enjoyably cool by the end of the hike.

    This is awesome, I used to just let the whole thing freeze and It would get mostly melted on the way to the field. I think if you combine this trick with the Condor Oasis carrier it'll last even longer.

    I do the same thing differently. Rather than freezing bladder itself, I prefer to freeze a few PET bottles of water, then cut the bottle in half and dump ice into the bladder. That allows to have cool water in case refill is required. Neoprene cover for bladder helps to keep the water cool, too.

    • @tc556guy
      @tc556guy Год назад

      We did that in Afghanistan; we'd raid the freezers on the FOBs that had such things because they usually had some bottles frozen for guys. IIRC one or two frozen bottles would pretty much last all night. Nowadays if I'm just out for a day hike ice cubes suffice

    I prefer the taste of rubber and hot water that absorbs into my system faster. Jokes aside this is actually a really nice idea for areas that are really hot and the cold water can help keep your core temperature down, especially when wearing heavy gear,

    tip from a winter runner (which is also applicable to summer as insulation insulates from both head and cold): i like to keep my hydration bladder in my backpack and my straw exposed over my shoulder where its comfortable and easy to drink while running long distance in very cold weather. i took an old scarf (rabbit hair) and several zipties and wrapped the straw giving it lots of extra warm insulation. that stays on all winter. then i took a couple vests (rabbit hair) and a few zipties and i wrap the bladder like a xmas present every time i use it. i take those off after every run so i can clean and refill the bladder and let the vests dry (sweat). it only takes a few minutes and works very well. if necessary you could heat the water to 110 or 120 before filling the bladder or cool it to 40 or 50.
    bonus tip: clean new bladders with vinegar to get rid of the weird plastic taste. within a couple weeks the taste was gone

  • @westsenkovec
    @westsenkovec 3 года назад +4

    This is exactly what you don't want to do.
    By inflating the bladder you're pushing it to the limit so when it's frozen there's no way for it to expand and it could burst open. Letting the air out will give it room to expand. Don't worry about the outlet because even if it freezes it will be free by the time you get to drinking the water.

    That's cute, but did you know, they used to chop ice from ice caves in Central Europe?They transported the big piles of ice all the way to Trieste / Trst and put em on sailing vessels to cool vegetables and fruit.The ice on ships would last all the way to Egypt, where sometimes they would sell it to make ice cream. The ice-cave ice is much more lasting than the sheets we have today in freezers/nature.

      Why make the extra work instead you have one giant ice cube that you just make in the bladder and then you pour water over it so it slowly melts over the day and keeps everything frosty.

    Even though water tastes better when cold, it's better to have it lukewarm because it takes less energy for your body to warm up the water

    • @BrainExploder
      @BrainExploder  7 лет назад +32

      Hmm my mouth disagrees with this.

    • @tummieboi
      @tummieboi 7 лет назад +1

      It's not better to have it lukewarm in the summer if you're going to pass out from heat exhaustion. Cold water is a necessity.
      And it's true that cold water does cause your body to use more energy to warm itself back up, but it only uses approximately 10 calories to warm your body up, an equivalent to walking a minute or two, so drinking cold water will not drain your energy anywhere near significant enough to tire you.

    • @KangarooJakk
      @KangarooJakk 7 лет назад

      DumplingDragon yes but it takes time for that water to warm up before it's moved through your body. room temp water hydrates you significantly faster. so it's actually better to drink on really hot days for hydration purposes

    • @juniorslothsix5562
      @juniorslothsix5562 6 лет назад +1

      this is 100% BS. If your body it constantly sweating to keep it self cold than it using alot of energy trying to keep cold, drinking cold water will cool you off(which is good to keep your body cool and not heatstroking) and will make your body use less energy. oh yeah and dumpling dragon is right, it will only take like 10 calories. YOUR BODY DOESNT NEED TO HEAT UP WATER TO USE IT WHEN HOT.
