I lile how for each one i thought "oh yeah this is what the movie is about" and then when the next one came up I thought "oh wow how did I forget about the Frank thing" or "how did I forget about the time travel thing". Thats not to say those aspects are forgetable, just that all three trailers are so accurate in describing the movie that you forget about the others in the moment. Great video
it was really fascinating making this and seeing what elements dropped in and out of prominence. Gretchen for instance barely features in the sci-fi version, and Donnie's mum is indispensable to the family drama version but absent otherwise. And of course, Frank is in all three!
I think it's an interesting one because it contains lots of imagery and ideas from a range of genres (most notably sci-fi and horror), but its actual plotline is more like a coming-of-age drama. And then there's the weird style! A fascinating one and huge staple of my teens.
Haven’t watched this movie since the days of DVD! Need to rewatch the recent 4K UHD Blu-ray release to remind myself of the plot. This is an excellent question and video, Will. Thank you so much. 👍🏻
Absolutely! One reason I instituted the 'original soundtrack only' rule is that I tried a cut to Smash Mouth's All Star with plenty of needle drops and it was just like shooting fish in a barrel
Have you seen the Director’s Cut? It’s much more focused on the sci-fi interpretation, so it’s a lot more clear. But it’s also a boring movie! For me, the power of the original version is its ambiguity; it shifts depending on what audiences want from it and how you choose to read it each time you see it.

I watched DD over and over and over again back in early 2000's. Rewatched a couple of times when older, and it's still awesome.
Stone cold classic. Remember seeing it at the GFT opening week. I'd say it falls into sci-fi drama, but also rides that 80s teen movie nostalgia

it is an excellent remaster- this video essay was made using the same master file but through the standard HD release.
Good stuff, Will. I'm sure a comedy trailer would be another possibility. It's a very funny film at times too. :)

Such an interesting question!
thanks! hope you enjoyed watching!
I don't understand the question. Donnie Darko is a transportation safety film, but the director was given too much budget and got too ambitious.
ah, that explains the diligent red-suited crash investigator. the true hero of the story.
So....you're not gonna tell me?
I come here for answers😔
