If'n you paint a tree on her, and paint a red circle on the tree and tell her you know some scary folk, she will probably start running a lot better without you getting all greasy.
Not saying you were fibbin, OR that I'm rememerin right BUT I thought when you were doing the points rotor and cap on her you mentioned how to see if your timing chain was loose by watching the rotor while you turn the crank by hand... and I asked then what the verdict on Betsy's timing chain was. You said there was no slack in the chain at all. So, there's that.
Instead of welding those tips on how about using one of the stainless strap style exhaust clamps. That way you don't damage the chrome. One like these (local part store can likely get them cheaper through Walker) www.jegs.com/p/Dynomax/Dynomax-Strap-Band-Clamps/744706/10002/-1

Thing is that everybody I know is scary folk..
doubt its the timing chain sounds more fuel or electrical
i'd start with checking the points
