Back in the day, you had to take what was available in your area or starve and be homeless.
It may come as a shock to you but all those social programs that are now available didn't used to be there. You could only qualify for food stamps (EBT) if you bought food that had to be cooked and lived in a place you could cook it in, and only if your lack of income qualified.

      - The taxation of Social Security began in 1984, 40 years ago but without any modification. The SS to be taxed does not make any sense when comparing the 40 years ago SS with the today money. And no one complains in order to adjust the SS to be taxed.
      - In 1980s, going to 4 year college tuition was almost free which was a fraction of today tuition. Today most of graduation have a big student loan debt and no one complains.

Why did no one address this problem during the election! We sat though endless debate about trans restrooms, gun control, immigration, the cost of eggs, prayer in school, tax cuts, even gender re-assignment but no bothered to stand up for working people who spent their youth in the system on the promise that they would have social security to rely on when they were too old to continue. I personally spent as long as 3.5 hours on hold to speak with a representative about my benefits although most calls were only 2 hours. The truth is our elected officials have no shame. Am I the only one who is outraged that they can give tax cuts to BILLIONAIRS, but I won't get my full benefits. There was time when politicians were fearful of taking advantage of the elderly. Now the young have been convinced it won't be there for them so they don't care either. Raising taxes provokes outrage but not cheating their parents out of retirement. I suppose justice will come to many when mom and dad have to move in with them.

Never once have I ever heard the Federal or State pension systems referred to as entitlements. They force us to work until 67 while they retire in their 50's on 3 to 5 times what people under Social Security get. The average Social Security payment is 22K while the average Federal retirement under the old Civil Service system is 65K, plus the taxpayers pay 70% of their medical insurance into retirement for the rest of their lives while we are forced to rely on only Medicare. Their retirement is based on their highest 3 years while Social Security is based on 35 years with 0's averaged in if you don't have a full 35 years. Under the Social Security system we paid in 6.2% of our income, our employers added another 6.2%, and we paid another 2.9% for Medicare for a total of 15.3% of every penny we earned. The Civil Service people only paid 2.76% more than an individuals 6.2% or 8.96% and of course unlike our employers the government chipped in nothing. So, in effect we easily contribute 4 to 5 times and probably a lot more considering the extra years we have to work for 1/5th the retirements they receive. Their retirement system is kept separate and safe from being raided, but the Social Security system has been raided into oblivion with nothing in it but IOU's by the government for a grand total of about 2.9 trillion dollars. That's right, the government owes 2.9 trillion dollars to the Social Security Trust Fund and they have never contributed one single penny into it. It isn't broke, or running out of money, they simply took it all. Now add to that the recent theft from the lie they are referring to as the Social Security Fairness Act. It is TOTALLY unfair because their entire income is not being used to calculate the payment, this will give extra money to the people already getting 5 times what the rest of us get and cause the system to be deleted earlier for the rest of us. You want to make it fair, transfer all money related to those retirement systems, from those protected accounts, into the Social Security system, drop the free for life medical care paid for by taxpayers, and then calculate their Social Security payments like the rest of us.

Sometimes, they make you go in anyway. I applied on line for both Social Security and Medicare. Medicare went smoothly. But for some reason, I was "selected" to have to go to the local office in order to prove my identity. I received a letter in the mail, telling me to call a specific agent, which I did. She told me that my application was completely in order, all of the documents uploaded fine, but I had to go to the "local" office to do this identity thing. And the "local" office is more than 60 miles away from my house (I live in a very rural part of the western US). And she told me that I couldn't make an appointment for it. So I ended up sitting in a very cramped and crowded office for a few hours, finally got called to the window, and the agent told me that they have only had to do this a few times. Why I was chosen, I don't know... the only thing different was that I chose not to apply until after FRA since I worked until several years beyond that age, and I had delayed retirement credits coming. I had a complete, continuous work history spanning 45 years, all in the US, and I was also born in the US.

Don't understand why you say that Biden is decreasing access. Sounds very political to me. I was able to get my Social Security and Medicare without talking to anyone. It's time Social Security offices become modernized. For example we rarely go into Banks anymore nor do we go to the DOT office to get our license and registration

My husband FILED ONLINE for social security in November about 6 weeks ago and we are waiting for him to be approved for March payment start date. He's turning 66 next year. He waited long enough. Also, we went to the social security office about 3 months ago to get IRMAA removed from his Medicare and the girl seemed to think he should still be paying it until I pointed out he made well under the amount required after he had a stroke in 2023 and he worked much less.

Actually, the true pros on Social Security are those who have been forced to take it early. And everyone will tell you that the SSA provided us appointments. Even if you just showed up at the building, they'll still see you to answer questions, and will go over your Quarters to let you know if you already paid in enough, and what you might get. They'll even accept your application online or in person. But in every case, you must have an appointment to go over your application and eligibility.
Perhaps things changed some during the pandemic, and they left it as is until they got around to change it back to exactly how Ed here remembers it as. He is however politizing his information that he's sharing. And no one Ga F about the political leanings of those who are supposedly working on behalf of protecting consumers. Really wish YTers would stop doing that.

I know that the government borrowed, by way of bonds, to fund their pet projects.
I also know that the government must pay the interest on those bonds, by law.
    My questions are…
What is the amount of these total bonds that has been borrowed?
How much interest is being paid by the government and is it tied to the government debt?
Can the administration of SSI refuse to loan anymore money (bonds) until the bonds are paid off?
Has the government any plans to actually pay off these bonds?
    Thank You

It’s not fair to add more employees to jobs that are obsolete. You know AI will replace 90% of all the jobs held by SSA employees in the next year or so. You will not only let most of the SSAs current employees go but all the new ones. You can load every single case that has ever come about into AI. Put in any question with your personal circumstances and out pops the correct answer. It will then start writing checks and sending money. Only a hand full of people will be necessary for that odd case that does not conform.
