  • This video is part of a "Gold Mining and Mineral Prospecting" course. In this video I explain the term "Stratifying". The shaking of a gold pan in order to separate the heavies, mediums and lights into layers.

You explained that really well and judging by the students you kept their attention too throughout also. Thanks for the lesson.

Hello! I am watching your video tutorials with great pleasure. I am a geologist and I understand perfectly what you are talking about, although I do not speak English. You are a wonderful teacher! Thanks!

Hi Dan! Thanks for all your videos! I wish I could do an internship working with you! I am about to by my first goldpan and shovel. I was thinking about stratifying material in the 5 gallon bucket.
If the bucket is 80% full of matetial and 100% full of water and I start to shake it the same way as I would shake the pan, how long would it take for all gold to sink to the bottom 10-20% of the bucket? Would that not be faster then panning it all out? Thank you!

    Hi Dan
You sound like a terrific teacher. Wish that there were courses like yours when I attended high school. I may not have been sitting at my desk for the last 30 years. :o)

When shaking very vigourously (yet keeping it in the pan), wouldn't it be better to vibrate the crap out of the pan?

+G. Webster Vibrating does work in the right situation. Although I have seen vibrations start a "current" in the pan with the material all rising in the middle and falling at the outside. I'm not sure if this would carry the gold with it or not. But to answer your question, yes vibrating does work.
