    I have realized that once my ancestry subscription expired that it no longer allowed me to view all the different images I have attached to my tree. I’m pretty sure that’s the primary reason why people are downloading the images and reuploading them as new images, and I can’t say I blame them, I have started to do that now myself at times.

    Thank you so much Crista. This was very informative and the "Best Practices" was an excellent way to address issues some of us have experienced with our uploaded media.

    Often photos that are uploaded by other members are extremely poor in quality. Whether the picture is degraded because of age or the member is inept at scanning it, the picture may be almost useless. One of my hobbies is digitally "restoring" old photos with Photoshop. I can download a "bad" picture to my computer, "restore" it, then upload a "good" picture to my tree. While I always name the original submitter when I do so, those connections you mentioned are lost. Therefore, I usually save both bad and good copies to my online tree and put a comment on that person in the original contributor's tree, informing them of my restoration and offering it to them if they want it.

      I bought a very high quality scanner and love taking old photos and removing all damage. Media is a very big part of my tree.

    Thanks for explaining how some of my stories and pictures have been edited by others. I’ve started writing sources into my stories so this information is not separated and so that people know where to reach me if they have questions.

    Crista, you've finally given me a reason to work on new Ancestry.
    I have hundreds of photos in my media gallery and, until now, no way to organize them.
    Especially thinks like my DINK shots (double income, no kids - married without children, etc) that I'm trying to use but can't find the media quickly.
    So, off to new ancestry to try out the new features in Media Gallery.

    This idea of attaching one photo to several people is all well and good but when you have over 7000 photos in your tree and want to attach a particular photo having to click page by page of photos to get to say page 42 to find a particular photo is a pain in the a$$! There should be an easier way to get to a particular page or offer a search option.

    Some great tips, but unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be anyway to sort or filter or search for media for the whole tree. With over 3000 media items it is impossible to find that picture, headstone, portrait of media icon used to mark my ancestors. Tried scrolling through 127 pages of media to no avail. Really guys, you have GOT TO MAKE MEDIA HANDLING MUCH BETTER!!!!!

    So happy to find this media tutorial! Went back to delete/reattach a list of ancestors to ONE icon instead of 29 individual icons. Hooray! A couple of observations: after attaching all 29 names it seems that only the first 25 are visible. At the bottom of the list there is a box with an “i” and “4 more names…” - but I can’t click on the box and get access to the names. Additionally, although I was able to add the names in alpha order - the list is a jumble. Alpha by surname would be great. Knowing that new Ancestry is still working out the kinks please consider adding these tweaks to the list.
    A possible work-around is to add a second icon, I suppose. I have two more lists of 31 and 56 names to delete/reattach. Maybe there is another solution? Thanks very much.

    The filtering and sorting are features of a PROFILE, not the Media Gallery.
    Doesn't help me clean up the Media Gallery.

    I like your icons that you shared with us concerning Married with children or not. Where is a good place to find these icons? I have also seen Icons for Civil War, Revolutionary War, etc. However, I can not find where they are coming from

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  9 лет назад

      +Joanie Runge I created the icons that I use. You could do the same. Or, you could do a web search for "copyright free images" and then whatever additional keyword you need (ie revolutionary war, civil war, immigration, etc.) Hope that helps! (Crista)

    If you use the "Save" feature in Ancestry to attach a record to an individual in your tree, and then you lose access to that tree, due to insufficient funds (Some of us can't afford the premium all the time), will you lose those pictures if you don't actually download them to your computer?
    I hope I am not confusing you. What I need to know is, if I don't download the pic and lose my account, will I still have access to my tree on Ancestry to see those documents and pictures?

    Christa, Great video and help me heaps to organise the pics. I'm particularly interested in your "Died Young" Married no Children and Never married icons....Did you create these as jpgs yourself, or are they available "on Line" somewhere?I would really like to use this concept. Thanks in advance

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  9 лет назад

      +Sandra Clark I created them myself using PowerPoint and then just converted them in to jpgs. You can do that. Or, you can draw something (or have a family member draw it) and then take a picture of it or scan it and upload it. Lots of options. Have fun with it. :-) (Crista)

    It has been SIX YEARS and we have still not seen any improvement in the TREE GALLERY. Please, just a few simple improvements would make its use much simpler. First - a SORT. By NAME would be great. By DATE would be nice, too. There are (at least) 2x2 versions of date sorting: PhotoDate and UploadDate; OldestFirst (ascending) and NewestFirst (descending). After that, any other sort would be icing on the cake. (also, jump-to-page so we don't have to click page 1,2,3,...)
    And while I am at it, I *highly suggest/request* that you offer this option related to PhotoDate. Look in the EXIF data for DATE-TAKEN and use that value if present. (or make it a user-selectable option to use). I add exif date-taken information to my images when scanning. Having to add it again on Ancestry is aggravating and a big time waste.

    Previously, if I, say, added a headstone picture from the "Hints" page; I could click on that picture on the person's profile page and be taken to the photo page, click edit and add the headstone to that person's spouse. That no longer appears to be possible. Now, to do this, it is necessary to go to the whole tree's media page to attach it to the spouse. In other words, a rather inconvenient step has been added to the process. This is NOT making things "easier!"

  • @cmccloskey56
    @cmccloskey56 9 лет назад

    OK, watching the video again, I see that your examples were from a person's profile.
    To mark photos from Medial Gallery, you don't have the filtering options as discussed.
    You have to go through hundreds of photos, pick Edit, THEN you will see the drop-down to flag it.
    Still trying to find a way to efficiently clean up my media gallery.

    This is an older video so this comment may not get answered; but there was very little mention of adding documents. Most of the presentation dealt with photos. How do I handle a newspaper article, death certificate, page from a Bible, family story, etc. Do I have to take a picture or scan it and then add as a photo? Seems like a lot of steps so there must be an easier way. P.S. I have found nothing in any video or help topics that cover this so that would be helpful. If there is one I'd like to know about it.

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  8 лет назад

      You can upload any kind of image - doesn't have to be a photo. If the image is already digital, just upload it. If it is a hard copy image, you will need to take a picture or scan it before uploading.

    I am one who has media duplicated due to merging trees. This information is VERY helpful, thank you. Could you tell me how to delete or merge the "duplicated" sources in FTM? I don't need 8 copies of the 1880 census for the same person, let alone the umpteen I have because of that many being attached to each person on the census! TIA!

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  8 лет назад

      Unfortunately, you can not merge sources. You will need to identify which one to keep and then manually delete the others. (Crista)

    Can I make a 'source' private. The example that comes to mind is my father-in-law's death certificate. I can
    upload a copy of it as a source for his birth/death info. But it will list my (living) husband's name as the informant & that he is FIL's son. Isn't that a problem?

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  9 лет назад +1

      +Jess If you have Family Tree Maker, you can mark individual pieces of media private so that when you sync it with your online tree they don't show up. But, if you don't there is not an online functionality to do that. (Crista)

    So upset that Ancestry is doing away with their Family Tree Maker. I have used that for years!!! Well I guess I will have to get Roots Magic and start that up.
