To my understanding someone drove by a few minutes after he killed the snake. He was able to flag them down and they stopped to see if he needed help. A lot of python hunters survey the same area at night since a lot of the snakes hang around/hunt in this area.

The state of Florida has a bounty on them. When I was young man and living in a river town, there was a 50 cent bounty on river crows. It worked very successfully. They don't have much effect today on the Mississippi as they did in my youth.
