I was there for this race Phoenix race . I believe this was the first NHRA event that Injected Nitro Dragsters competed. I was also there at the Winter Nationals when Kenny Bernstein crashed. A couple of weeks before this Larry Dixon had a bad crash at the Budweiser warm up at Bakersfield that I was there for that as well.
No, the A/FD's also competed in Pomona the week earlier. Brooks Brown(I think that was his name) won it in a A/FD ! The day after this race(Monday), teams were testing and Pat Austin turned left from the right lane & demolished his car. I could read the goodyear rubber imprint from his front tire on the cement guardrail ! I worked for Bucky back then.
@@alleyoop1234 Are you sure about that? I thought I remembered that the injected nitro dragsters where supposed to debut at Pomona, but some confusion about equipment rules caused it to be postponed until Phoenix. I do remember Brooks Brown driving his step fathers, Tom Topping (RIP), injected nitro dragster, which was the first nitro injected dragster I ever saw make a pass. When you say Bucky...you mean Bucky Austin?
It always amazes me every time I see that Hofmann fire. The camshaft shoots out the front of the body in 2 pieces.
