Wow, Virginia May was one HELL of a talented sculptor.
Haha pretty certain that's footage of her tearing apart a sculpture, but in reverse. A brilliant sculptor for sure, but sculpting isn't that easy or quick to achieve.
Actually, I think they just ran that footage in reverse and she was actually taking apart the sculpture.
She was a hottie too.
Yeah, I heard that from Dino Diego, that it’s just footage of her taking apart the dinosaur but in reverse.
@seanshep
What.
Combine dinosaurs and stop motion and I'm always on board.
This music is very calming
Never saw this surprisingly gory old film. Love it!
When dinosaurs were thought to have lived 10 million years ago
I love those T. rex jumps^_^
Jesus back then people were gods at sculping. I mean just look at how long it took that woman to create a T-Rex.
Wow, the most playful TRex ever~~~ Thanks for posting.
They used this in a lot of the documentaries I saw as a kid
Art Clokey might have watched this. Gumby and Pokey forever!
4:07 that close up shot of the t Rex is so disturbing
Honestly, this depiction of T-Rex kinda creeps me out. Not only the stop motion movements, but also the model, especially those close ups of the head with the tongue flicking out. But the creepiest part is the hopping; as stupid as it might look, I'm unnerved by the idea of something that big hopping like a kangaroo, especially if it were hopping towards me.
Not saying that I don't like it. Quite the opposite; I love stuff like this.
If you read the book versions of The Lost World or The Land That Time Forgot, apparently theropods hopping like monstrous toads to catch/kill their prey was not an uncommon belief back then.
I had never seen this before, and I have been a fan of stop motion since the 1950's. I 'd love to find out who Pathe had on staff at the time to animate this. Ms. May?
T-Rex the original Gene Simmons!
Looks like this was made in the 1920's.
It was; 1923, to be precise.
When was this done? Looks like clay-mation?
I believe it was made in the 1920's and it is clay-mation but with a wire frame armature inside
May is the Dame of evolutionary research.
Trex HOPPED LIKE A KANGAROO??
It took me a while to understand that the sequence with the actress is played backwards.
Loved the video, but as someone who's sculpted with clay before, something about the "sculpting" of the t-rex looks very off to me. It looks like they filmed the scene in reverse, with the woman destroying the already created sculpture. Just something about the way she just "forms" the extrusions where the seams seem to be formed perfectly at first, looks fake to me. It might be just my eyes, or it was just easier to film it that way to get the result they wanted. But its odd.
TK, you are right about the "sculpting" they filmed it with with sculper breaking the sculpture. Then they reversed the footage
@@SGTMET4L ahh, good to know I'm not crazy haha! Guessing it was easier to do it like that. Love the video tho, never can get enough stop motion dinos
My sentiments exactly.
they thought the T-Rex was jumping like the cangaroo
according to the OUTLINE OF HISTORY by H.G. WELLS, "Tyrannosaurus seems almost the last word in "frightfullness" among living things. Some species of this genus measured forty feet from snout to tail. Apparently it carried this vast body kangaroo fashion on its tail and hind legs. Probably it reared itself up. Some authorities even suppose that it leapt through the air. If so, it possessed muscles of a quite miraculous quality. A leaping elephant would be a far less astounding idea. Much more probably it waded half submerged in pursuit of the herbivorous river saurians."
That explains the kangaroo jumps
@@SGTMET4L this was a well known view at that time ,because of its large hips and legs it was easy to imagine it leaping like a kangaroo..
Ahhhh ok, never knew that
Which DVD of this original version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's book brought to life on the screen can I find this? I've been looking for a DVD with Monster of the past for years. Plus, I like this Stop Motion puppet T.REX. As much as the other Stop Motion T.REXES from the other Films. In Black & White or In Color.
This short was part of of the The Lost World (Silent Classics), picked it up from Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-World-Silent-Classics-DVD/dp/B00319U7JG/ref=sr_1_5?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1498411120&sr=1-5&keywords=the+lost+world . The DVD also includes the following shorts by Willis O' Brien : The Dinosaur and the Missing Link: A Prehistoric Tragedy, 10,000 BC and Prehistoric Poultry.
SGT MET4L I'm more of a Region 1 & Amazon.com USA kind of person. There's been several different releases of the 1925 version of The Lost World. I meant which one of the DVDS of the 1925 Region 1 releases has this short film? I'm just double checking.
SGT MET4L Hmm. Come to think of it, I might've seen an exact DVD case somewhere on USA amazon.com. With my name on it. I'll deal with it later. If it's still there including the good price it costs to buy it.
The Lumavision dvd and also I think the Slingshot dvd, which is all the same everything, has this short film on it. You may have missed them at this point in time.
O'Brien wasn't involved in this film.
OK my mistake, who did the stop motion animation for this short?
Virginia May, shown in the movie, seems to be the only crew member identified, usually as "sculptor". It wouldn't be surprising if she also did at least some of the animation, but was denied credit. FYI I learned of the film from Donald Glut's Dinosaur Scrapbook. That author apparently only knew of footage that had been included in a latter compilation, where it was misidentified as from OB's "Lost World". He was highly critical of the animation and sculpture, and also characterized the work as "atypically bloody". A still included in the book would have been too poor for conclusive identification, except that it clearly shows the T-rex with both feet in the air.
Thanks for the additional information, I've now changed to credits in the video description. I thought it was a weird short for Willis o' Brien to do, especially with the "kangaroo" T-Rex.
You still forgot to change the title, though. But regardless, thanks for uploading this.
Virginia also made a film called George Washington in Clay. So Clay animation was her thing. Not sure if she did other films or not.
