I have always been ashamed of myself whenever I was irritated with my mother for not cooking with involvement . She is no more. There is such terrible regret for my harsh words . After seeing this movie, I felt guilty for so many days. It’s so wrong to take our mothers, sisters and in case of men, the wives for granted. It’s unbelievable rut, what they go through, every day for us.

One scene that passed quickly but was striking was when the “impure” wife touched her husband, the high priest listed out the traditional remedies the husband would have to do - eating cow dung or drinking the juice from dung, but in the same breath, he was quick to make adjustments to these “old” rules by saying he could wash himself in the pond, thereby making it convenient for the husband. But there were no leniencies given to the wife in matters of religion no matter how absurd the rules were.

    ****SPOILER ALERT****
I don't know if you noticed these points, but these are some of the brilliant yet subtle points in this movie according to me...Most of these points were brought to my notice after I read some other reviews online and I went back to watch them again...This movie is a brilliant brilliant creation!!

1)The characters(at least the main ones) don't have any names..and that's the point...they are every other husband or wife who have perpetuated or accepted patriarchy..
    2) The wife is considered impure when she was on her periods, yet we see that when she was cleaning the table and her hands are greasy and dirty, he still wanted to hug her.
    3) When she gets her periods she is not allowed to enter the kitchen and we see the maid come in and do all the cooking and cleaning chores that the wife was doing all these days... showing how the wife is treated like a servant and not as a wife or a daughter.
4)We see the mother in law in her saree when she is at her home but when goes to visit her pregnant daughter to take care of her, whose lifestyle seems "modern", we see that she doesn't wear a saree anymore...she wears churidar..
    5) There is a scene that shows the photos on the wall of all the previous couples who have lived in that house and in the background we hear the washing of utensils, cleaning of the floor, etc showing us how time hasn't changed the women's experiences in that house
6)When the newlyweds come to the house for the first time after their wedding, we see them get out of a red car, and the camera pauses at the car...and we see it is a new car, which doesn't have a nameplate yet...Most likely this car was given as dowry to the groom's family...A few scenes later we see the father in law closing a suitcase filled with gold ornaments and puts it in a safe... That too is dowry...It was worn by the girl on her wedding and after that it was the groom's family's "property"..
    7) When she talks about getting a job, the father in law shoots this idea down by saying that women are auspicious to the home and they are doing the greatest work than anyone else...the very next scene we see her washing someone else's underwear.. Also, the father-in-law supports his statement of women not working by saying that the mother-in-law had a master's degree and when she wanted to go for a job, he didn't allow him and listened to his Dad..He tells her that if she asks her mother-in-law about this, she too will have the same opinion that she should stay in the house. BUT, when she talks to her mother-in-law about this, she encourages her to pursue the job but tells her that no one should know that it was her idea... that's the story of most women in such traditional houses ...they want so many things but are so scared to voice their opinions because it is a male dominated household .....

    • @sapnasura
      @sapnasura 3 года назад +103

      Great points!
Also how easily replaceable all the women in their lives were. If it’s not MIL, their DIL will cook, clean, etc. when DIL can’t do it, a maid comes in, or his aunt comes in to serve them. Their lives change by no means, they don’t pitch in with house work, they simply change out women in their lives to serve them.

    1. The characters in the movie did not have a name (implying this can be anyone)
    2. The focus on the pictures on the wall (depicting this is just the way of things generations through)
    3. the last walk and background scenes of the different homes

Was waiting to see your review and you guys nailed it like hell.
A few subtle social commentary from movie for your better understanding
    1) in indian arranged marriages dowry is a prevailing custom. After the marriage the one car remains is a parting gift from brides FATHER to the GROOM.
    2) far right is occupying indian political power now, during the marriage you could see the father character gossips with his friends and one of them says its only beginning. What they imply is what far right indian politics had just start to do what german aryans did to jews to indian minorities.
3)its coustom for the newly weds to visit all relatives from both in laws after arranged marriage. So in the start while during such a visit there are two children in a family a boy and a girl, boy is right there in the dining table taking food along with the couple. Nimisha ask the girl to sit along with them but her mother objects with some excuse. Indoctrination from childhood.
    4) in the same scene mentioned in (3) there is reference of beef not being brought to home because of opposition from grand mother. Consumption of beef is a sensitive issue in india since it is considered as a religious totem of hindus. Though in kerala beef is a favourite cuisine unlike other parts of the country, there are conservative sections who don't bring it home. The irony is same grand mother is reading deshabhimani, the left mouthpiece news paper of kerala.
    5) sabarimala is the most famous temple in kerala and only women below 8 and above 50 could enter the sanctum. Obviously mensuration devoid women. Male devoties need 40 or such days pre visit rituals of imagined purity, abstain from sex, eating habits etc. India's supreme court after about 12 years trial gave verdict that ritual in sabarimala is discriminatory aganist women with regard to constitutional rights. In light of this verdict many feminist views where circulated in social media. Hooligans who haven't get train from dark ages did many criminal activities targeting those support the verdict. The climax uses this real social even. You could also see some women protesting aganist court verdict in backdrop when nimisha walks out of the hell to large horizon.

I watched the movie with my wife. I had to mentally check if I did any of those things myself. We were both frustrated with the husband character. I cheered at the end when she threw the water in their faces and locked them up. I rarely get so invested in anything I watch. Many of these things were taught to be by my sister and I have never thought that household chores are only women's domain. I'm thankful for having strong female role models in my life for teaching me how to treat women. Not saying I'm a saint, but I'm self aware enough to own up when I screw up.
This movie is a must watch, especially for all Indian men.

I loved this movie soo much! It covers sooo many aspects of Indian society particularly. Notice how the women do alll the work every single time. Scenarios kept changing, work kept changing (washing clothes, cooking, cleaning the house, giving the father in law something so minuscule as a tooth brush with the toothpaste already on it) yet not once did the man do any work. Not a single work.
There was deep rooted sexism and patriarchy, even when it came to God.
To make it worse, it was a prestigious family with the son being a sociology teacher 🙄

About a woman's periods... the practices started with the intention of keeping the woman safe and rested, owing to the times these practices began, but as is common with human nature, over time people started following and enforcing these practices in the name of religion, society etc. without stopping to consider the relevance of older practices in current times.

It has nothing to do with giving women the much-needed respite. I don't think it ever had. Yes, there would be break from regular chores. But in these 7 days, they (i.e. the system) make the women feel so wretched and dirty with this isolation and snide remarks. "Dont sit there" , "don't touch that." I personally feel, they emotionally keep women down to keep her mind occupied so that she doesn't enjoy the respite.

    • @aninditabhattacharya1715
      @aninditabhattacharya1715 3 года назад +1

@@nchl5340 Thats what it has come down to, as I said, due to human nature of clinging on to practices without assessing their relevance through the times.
But original reasons were related to the living conditions in ancient India, where wild animals used to co-exist around human habitat, and women did far more physical work than they do now. Animals can smell blood from a long distance, and women were asked not to go out to work in the fields or to collect water from the river etc. because of the risk of animal attack, and also to give respite from real physical hard work.
How subsequent generations have come to interpret this as impurity and have given it a religious connotation is unfortunate.
This is similar to how dowry was supposed to be the gifts that a bride's family gave at the time of wedding, but it reached the heights of atrocities against women, to a point where it had to be labelled criminal.
So many other examples can be given on similar themes.

It happens in modern families living in modern houses and apartments too. Bulk of the kitchen duty still on women of the house. Division of household chores - from cooking to cleaning to washing to ironing to taking care of the kids, elderly care...
Even the places with maids, it is the women who have to watch/supervise the maids. It is the women who take the mental load. My father cooks thrice in a week. He doesn't leave the kitchen dirty. He washes/irons his own clothes. But my mother says he was not like this in the first 3-4 years of marriage. Still, I feel the division of labour btw my mother and father is 70:30.
Situation in every house may not be as awful as that in the movie. But these patriarchal elements exist even in the so-called progressive families.

If I have my period and I'm in extreme discomfort I should have the freedom to step back for those days. However if I'm perfectly fine and in no major discomfort I should have the freedom to continue entering the kitchen, sleeping on my bed, exercising or whatever I want to do.
The problem arises when this is turned into something that's forced on a lady. A natural bodily process that's turned into something dirty... That is where the problem lies.
Also I have to say I've seen women guilty of forcing these regressive ideas on other women as well, so let's not start bashing men alone.
