- Throughout the Tudor Period and in the centuries after, the site of Tower Hill in London became known as the public beheading spot and it was here where many significant Tudor people met their executioners. Sir Thomas More during the reign of Henry VIII was condemned there, as was Bishop John Fisher a man who’s execution caused a huge amount of distress and upset. It was during Henry VIII’s reign that around 70,000 people were executed inside of his kingdom, but even his closest friends were not exempt from his tyrannical behaviour and actions, and this included even his greatest friends. Thomas Cromwell is remembered today as the Chief Minister of the King who made him incredibly wealthy as he dissolved monasteries and religious houses all across the nation, and the dissolutions led to monks being executed, very pious and religious people who were slaughtered in the most awful ways. Many more lost their homes and ways of life, but some abbots were even hanged drawn and quartered with their heads placed above their abbeys. But Thomas Cromwell would fall from grace as he made a huge mess of arranging Henry VIII’s fourth marriage, and he was later sentenced to death. But alongside Cromwell that day who was executed with him was a man who was known for a number of other offences and crimes, but who was this mysterious man who was condemned on the 28th July 1540 on Tower Hill with the King’s Chief Minister?

Henry VIII was a monster. He was quick to condemn (get rid of) people in his way or if he was angry at them for whatever, but he didn't have to see what happened to them. He just ordered it. He was such a coward and always blamed others for everything. He never took responsibility. However, when he left this world, he sure was held accountable for everything he had done and all the people he had harmed or murdered. His kingly status meant nothing then. I dare say he is still paying and rightly so!!

I read that the "Flanders mare" nickname was never actually coined by Henry VIII. It was said by someone else decades later...

There is NO evidence that Henry ever referred to Anne as the “Flanders mare”. Instead it was Gilbert Burnet, Bishop of Salisbury (in 1679) who claimed Henry had said so. No other evidence nor mention of same phrase in contemporary sources. 🤦♀️
I have heard this also. But it's amazing how many online sources still credit it to Henry. I hope it will be more widely cleared up soon.

What happened to Hungerford’s wife? Was she set free?
I can't find exactly when she was freed or how but she was at some point. She remarried to Robert Throckmorton. I believe she had kids by him but I could be getting her confused with someone else
