When Paul Sorvino was chosen by Scorsese for Paulie, at the time he was staring as one of the cops in the early years of Law and Order. He played the detective who’d be replaced by Jerry Orbach as Lenny Briscoe when the show really got huge in the 90s. Aside from Sorvino’s natural looks as a male of Italian descent, he was nervous about finding a way to play a ruthless mob boss which he’d never done before. In real life Paul Sorvino is a genuinely nice guy.
He said one day he was at his bedroom dresser mirror getting ready for the day like usual, and he looked down and found a stain or a tear or something on his shirt that he wasn’t happy with. When he looked back up into the mirror, he had THE STARE. That look you both mentioned numerous times. Paul said when he saw it looking back at himself in the mirror, he scared himself! That’s when he knew he was looking at Paulie and knew how to play him in the movie.

I've read that Batts, who was in the Gambino family, was close to Gotti, and that it was Gotti, when he was still a soldier or capo, who personally took care of Tommy as revenge for Batts - it's believed Tommy did not die as quickly as he did in the film; they took their time with him.

According to Henry's IRL version who wrote the book, Jackson's character was actually really close to Tommy. Like so close that Tommy who seem to enjoy killing initially refused to take him out a couple times. It said that it wasn't until he was promised be made if he did that he agreed. Also Tommy felt so bad about it he called the man's mother giving tearful condolences.

The real Henry Hill was a real piece of work. He was so messed up drugs or alcohol most of the the time, they even forced him out of witness protection. If you follow Michael Franzese he did a thing on this & because MF was also former Cappo of Columbo family, he said how he seen Henry in prison & even though he was supposed to whack Henry he didn't at first he said how he didn't want to admit seeing him but they kept asking Michael who did you see & reluctantly told them that he seen Henry & then they said they were going to move MF & he said why me move Henry.. So they moved Henry Hill to a different prison. Also said some of things Henry said wasn't truthful to the way things actually went down. About Tommy & what did Tommy De- simmone in aka In movie Tommy Devito. Some talk Billy Batts wasn't actually a made guy & what actually got Tommy killed is a different guy that was also close to John Gotti much like Billy batts was also close to John Gotti. But Tommy was going out with this other guys sister & the guy didn't like it & eventually tommy killed him & along with Tommy's ways & also killing of Billy Batts is what got Tommy killed.

They know you're going to ask, and will 99 times out of 100 tell you what you need to know. This might help you from talking over something important, like the answer to your question! I suggest you watch "Casino" when you get a chance, also starring Pesci and DeNiro.

The reason why they only whacked tommy and left jimmy and Henry alone was because all 3 of them were under Pauly who was the boss of the luchese crime family. Batts was with the Gambinos. Pauly knew all 3 of them were involved but the Gambinos didn't know who exactly was involved. The gambinos only knew that he was in a luchese joint and never came home. So they were hounding Paulie about it. Paulie had to abide by the rules of la Cosa Nostra and to avoid a war with another family he had to give them the retribution that they were owed. So he gave them Tommy's life but wouldn't give up jimmy and Henry. Jimmy was too good of an earner and Henry was like family. That would have been too much. The way he saw it he gives them tommy and makes them happy and he removes a guy that was becoming too much of a headache anyway. The only stipulation was that they would be the ones to carry out the hit so that they could do it quick and painless. If he had delivered tommy to the gambinos tommy would have been tortured and it would make Pauly look weak to have it known on the street that another family was allowed to torture and kill someone under Paulies protection. Batts crew prob wasn't happy about it but the deal was made by the bosses and its above thier pay grade. The Gambino boss only stipulated that tommy must take one in the face as tradition requires. Like they say in the movie "there was nothing we could do it was amongst the Italians" tommy was a rule breaker and that's the worst thing you can do in the mafia. The rules and tightly regulated structure is the only thing separatin them from any other criminal gang in the country. But it's a fragile thing that needs constant Maintenance and attention. In my opinion tommy should have been cut out a long time ago. Also I don't think Henry every appreciated his relationship with Paulie. He took him for granted and disrespected him at every turn. But that was a lifelong trend forHenry, starting with his parents, school, Karen, and ultimately with jimmy and Paulie. He had a serious problem with authority and disrespected every person in his life that tried to have a relationship with him. It's why in real life he died alone with no one

It’s practically a cinematic trope and, I’d assume, true in reality, that Mafioso have wives and ‘goomars’ girlfriends, on the side. After Karen pulls a gun in bed, Henry has a conversation with Paulie in which Paulie complains that Karen is “coming to the house,” causing headaches for Paulie. Paulie demands that Henry has to go back with his wife. It’s an allusion to the prohibition against divorce from the Catholic Church. There is a named character in the long bar introduction given a name but no dialogue based on a real person who committed the unpardonable sin of entering the Witness Protection Program and testifying against former associates. In an interview he describing having and needing 50 suits due to attending a wedding or funeral every weekend. He elaborated that at more than half the events, he had no idea who the person being honored was. That, too, has its origins in the appreciation and promotion by the Church of ritual and pageantry.

Please, please react to "Casino" and "A Bronx Tale". Thanks for the "Goodfellas" and both Godfather movie reactions :) Oh and of course please react to Godfather 3. Most people say it's not as good as 1 and 2 but that's also because they don't understand it. It's all connected to the real-life conspiracy that was taking place with regards to the Vatican, the new pope, banks, CIA, etc. (although the heavy CIA/American corruption & influence is kept out of the movie).

Funny thing about this movie, the real Henry Hill talked to Scorcese after seeing the movie and said "Thanks for not making me look like an asshole." Considering how much an asshole he is in the movie, just imagine how much of one he was in real life if he thought the movie made him not look bad.

In real life Paulie supposedly had an affair with Henry hill’s wife Karen while Henry was in jail. At the same time the real Tommy supposedly tried to rape Karen.
Karen told Paulin about it and he supposedly went to the gambino family and said that tommy was the one who killed Billy bats. He then said that Henry and told him he found out it was tommy who killed billy bats to spare Henry from also being killed.

THE masterpiece film of the last 30 years. Yes, there have been many great movies over these decades, no doubt. But a better movie since Goodfellas was released?
It lost many of the "big" Oscars to "Dances With Wolves," a stereotypical trope about the myth of the "white savior." Yuck. On the other hand, Martin Scorsese, one of the most original voices in American cinema history, has been robbed over and over again by the academy. Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull...Yes, I lost faith in the Oscars many years ago. Fortunately, true art stands the test of time, awards or not.

The "Funny How" scene was based on a real life experience Joe Pesci had with the real life Tommy Desimone, while he was working as a waiter serving the wise guys.
In real life, Desimone was like 6'3" and muscular, so you can imagine how little Joe Pesci must have felt about it.

@@Unpainted_Huffhines The "funny how" scene was taken from a real life incident involving Pesci and Robert "Bobby Cabert" Bisaccia who was a Gambino captain in the Newark/Belleville area of NJ. .....at least that's what I was told. I'm from that area and play golf with an oldtimer who isn't a wiseguy but he used to play cards with Cabert and his crew back in the day. The looks on your face at the end of this movie....we all know how you felt!!!!! Beautiful! Great frickin' edit, George, thank you.... fantastic reaction. "CASINO" is virtually a sequel, "Goodfellas Goes To Vegas", a lot of the same cast, same style so if you liked this one......there's another one that's virtually as good (some like it even better). I'm sure you've already seen the first two Godfather movies, but those four movies are the top of the heap for mob movies. "The Irishman" is the third in the trilogy of Scorsese/De NIro/Pesci mob movies, and is also very good....although their collaboration starts with the fantastic RAGING BULL. Scorsese and De Niro followed that up with the incredible THE KING OF COMEDY. And after Goodfellas, Scorsese and De Niro followed that up with CAPE FEAR, their biggest hit and one of the great suspense films of the 90s. Another essential Scorsese movie that you guys will absolutely love: AFTER HOURS, one of the most 80s of all 80s movies....and one of the greatest! LOVE YOU GUYS!!!! It's funny you said "it's gotta be Paulie right?" It's not stated in the movie but it was, Paulie was having an affair with Henry's wife (the movie hints at this with the line where Paulie says he knows how to talk to Henry's wife) and she said enough to him he was able to piece things together and decided to wack Tommy to get the other family off his back and it take care of Tommy who was a wild card.
