Sun bears are bears of the genus Helarctos, there are three extant species of sun bear: the Indochinese Sun Bear (Helarctos indochinensis), the Sumatran Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus), and the Bornean Sun Bear (Helarctos euryspilus), they are the sole extant genus of the subtribe Helarctina, which is part of the tribe Ursini of the broader subfamily Ursinae (Long-Snouted Bears), the bornean sun bear is known for being the smallest living bear species.
It is eerily primate like in its movements. If you watch closely you will see it rotating its arms and wrists like a human. A wonderful example of convergent evolution.
Small, but a very strong species of bears, for their size.. I seen one open a coconut, like if it was a head of lettuce.... And they must be also the closest relative to the sloth bears...
The sun bear is a great way to view the age of the Bornean rainforest. It’s so old that a bear - one of the largest mammals and largest predatory mammal on the planet - could find the time to adapt to the environment, grow to the full size of most other bear species’ cubs - and still be an apex predator. The jungles of this island are extraordinary. If we judge the rainforest by being the most complex ecosystem in the planet, then Borneo has to sit head and shoulders above the rest. Time has created an environment where niches are more specific and dependent on the niches of others than anywhere else on our special little world. We really must protect a place like this with all the night we can muster. Places like this harbor the bulk of our biodiversity and must be at the top of the list for conservation.
As a kid I helped the zookeepers at the Audubon zoo capture an escaped sun bear it climbed up a tree and I followed it and knocked it out the tree into a net. They are not really mean animals, it just ran away to be naughty it didn’t wanna hurt anybody
I can't believe how hard it is for wild animals to find enough food to eat and the physical effort required. I drive to the store and buy food. Every day, I look up and see a Turkey Vulture or a hawk circling and think, "OMG. I'd be dead in a week if I had to even grow my food, never mind fly around for days looking for something to murder." What a unique creature that bear is.
It’s the Drop Bear! (For those who don’t know, Drop Bears are mythical carnivorous marsupials that are thought to sit in trees and suddenly pounce down on their victims below.)

My favorite islands that are hotspots for biodiversity are Madagascar where lemurs, tenrecs, chameleons and fossas live, the Galapagos Islands where giant tortoises, finches, marine iguanas, sea lions and sally lightfoot crabs live and now the Bornean Sun Bear in Borneo's tropical rainforests.
It may be the smallest, but if this is the bear I think it is, its super aggressive because its half blind. Snort up them ants little bear. I love bears, but I wouldnt want to get too close to one.

No, they are more closely related to the American and asiatic black bears than they are to sloth bears.
And can get very aggressive. Dont be fooled by their cute looks.
sloth bear is a distant relative to the sun bear. Sloth bear's "sister taxa" is the branching point for Sun bears.

In 1950s the entire island of Borneo was covered in such a forest. Now, only 30% remains, being displaced by endless palm oil plantations.

I saw a male gorilla climb a palm tree like that, he just casually walked up the trunk, grabbed a coconut and slid down.
