As a Blackburn fan darwen are also close to my heart a lot of rovers fans support them as a non league club, they are a brilliant little club looking to go places, the ground is getting a lot of investment and hoping to see them out of the north west counties for the first time into the northern leagues, not been able to get down in a few years since they avoided relegation from the north west counties premier (9th tier) I think in 2017 I think it was now
Great story. I watched the English game as soon as Netflix aired it. Fantastic video Sam. I love history mate. I honestly never knew about Fergus Soutar (Even though he was a fellow Glaswegian) until I seen the English/British game.😂 lol
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy the football history, I love learning about all these stories too. But yeah Fergus, he was the original paid player... what a legend!
Excellent video Sam! Love to see that this historic club is still running as a Phoenix, shame the original couldn't continue, amazing that they challenged the stereotype of the classes in football! The documentary is also great and represents it very well! ⚽️ Great tour
@@FootyAdventures It makes it even worse that big clubs, and a lot of clubs in general have lost the same interest in the FA Cup...! The story, and origin is brilliant.
There was a fair number of Partick players went on to play for Darwen and other Lancashire clubs at that time. Fergus' wee bother played for them too. The real story of Jimmy Love is a tragic one. He'd set up a street cleaning company at the age of 18 but it failed, he was set to face bankruptcy in 1878 but failed to show at court. An arrest warrant was then issued against him and this was when he ran away to Darwen where he played successfully for 2 years. It then appears his past was catching up with him, so in 1880 he joined the Royal Marines. By 1882 he was sent into action in Egypt where British soldiers had been deployed to put down a National uprising, taking back Alexandria from the occupiers. He fell ill with enteric fever and died in Ismailia aged only 24.
Thanks for letting me know about the link with Partick and the English clubs. Such a sad story there about Jimmy Love. Cheers for watching, much appreciated.
You should maybe checkout Old Boltonians in Turton who play in the Lancashire Amateur League, their pitch in Chapletown is regarded as the oldest pitch still in use that dates to the 1830s, it started out as the home of Turton FC and since 1950 it's been the home of Old Boltonians
The original ground was Barley bank, there is a street there now and is next to the Alexandra pub which was then a grand house. The team used it to change in. The old ground went from Barley bank street all the way to Avondale primary school. The terrain is still pan flat in a town dominated with hills. Great video though.
Back then the Scottish had a passing game with tactics similar to today's game where in England the game almost unrecognizable as the English teams all didn't pass and each player would just rush with the ball as fast as they could or just punt it upfield, similar to what young kids would do all bunched up. Football is a Scottish game as is tennis, golf and rugby ( which should be called 'Royal High') as Ellis took the game from Royal high school in Edinburgh before going to Rugby to study. Facts
That league table shows Ardwick fc.. Not sure if your aware but that team were what's now known as Manchester City.. The name Ardwick fc replaced the name St.Marks fc which was the first name city were formed as several years earlier..
I think York City’s Old ground Bootham Crescent is yet to be knocked down for housing Might be worth a visit before it’s gone I’ve played two Sunday league finals there (lost them both😂) and was a mascot there when they played Sunderland in a friendly in 2011
Talking about films, have you ever watched The World Cup, A Captains Tale,? stars Denis Waterman , it depicts the story of West Auckland FC, a team of part time players who represented England in the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, some times described as the first world cup. in 1909 ,1911. they beat Juventus in the final.
Please do a vlog on West Auckland FC - West Auckland Town Football Club are a football club from West Auckland, near Bishop Auckland in County Durham, England, competing in the Northern League, in the ninth tier of the English football league system. They represented England in the first "World Cup" footballing competition, Arranged by tea baron Sir Thomas Lipton, this coal mining club beat the likes of Juventus along the way. Made famous by the film The World Cup: A Captain's Tale starring Denis Waterman ("Minder"), Nigel Hawthorne ("Yes Minister") & Tim Healey ("Auf Wiedersehen Pet"). They won the trophy twice & got to keep it permanently where is is taking pride of place in the club's trophy cabinet.
You picked out all the teams in the Division 2 table but missed out Ardwick who later changed their name to Manchester City. If you get to Derbyshire then check out New Mills which was the setting for the Sky One tv series "The Rovers"
A great video. Their facilities look immense. As you say wherever you go and find out about the origins of football you will trace it back to Glasgow. Without Fergie, what would football be like? And that's before you even get onto his namesake a century later :-) Both from Glasgow. Both from the World Capital of Football. And of course there are both #ScotchProfessors.... Looking forward to the Euros - England v Scotland. Can't blooming wait. GB

The Anchor ground is Darwens new ground its not where Fergus played
Get along to Darvel , East Ayrshire On January 23rd 7.45pm when they play Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup ! 🏴🏆🏴
Pioneers of the modern game
They certainly are!
Thats not the ground Fergus and co. played on, the old one is long since gone, now houses
you should have gone to the Alexandria pub, thats where the famous photo was taken on the steps outside, old ground
was next to the building
sorry to put a dampner on things, but lived in Darwen all my life, the Anchor was built much after this, the old ground is now rows of terraced houses
