Freyoid this production is not in sign language. there was a broadway revival production in 2015 where half the cast was deaf and the deaf characters had "singing/speaking counterparts" (their voice basically) and everyone in the show who wasnt also playing an instrument signed their lines, this was 4 years after the production shown in this video. this production was in scottland i think, and the hand movements are just a part of the original choreography, every production has it although this was obviously a little stiff and way overboard with the hand movements, no clue what they though they were doing. i went overboard on the information and dont expect you to know 99% of this shit, but dont go around acting ignorant telling people that something is sign language when it isnt.
I only know a few songs from Spring Awakening and this is one of them. I'm so glad I came across this video again after so many years this is my favorite rendition of this song.
I actually disagree with the people who say the movements were too much. A lot of things are done with this show to illustrate a point, and I honestly think that this song should be more intense than most productions show it, like your director said . Also, if you really examine this song, there's a lot of symbolism and quite a few allusions here and the whole song is really about her frustration with her mother for not explaining the changes in her body. Powerful performance that conveys this.
The movements actually help me to understand what the lyrics are saying. But, naturally, no amount of movements could replace the beautiful voice that you have!
@ HungryLionCAT... Hey, thanks for your comments. I agree this is quite intense and this was very much how the director interpreted the part. The whole show was presented in a similar style and this was in keeping with that style. I think he felt that to do justice to the later scenes in the show where Wendla asks Melchior to beat her (etc) ; you needed to see something in her that is deep and dark and intense from the beginning. It's all opinion and I appreciate them all :) Thankyou, Helen x
I think Helen Hart does a superb job as Wendla. She is committed to the lyris of the song and takes the audience on a journey with her. I really enjoyed the performance. :)
i forgot about this song. i found it through 90210 but never searched it. the only reason i found it now is due to freaking out about my lack of knowledge on songs in musicals and broadway performances. it's because i may be auditioning for a performing arts school in NY. i can't use this song tho which is kind of disappointing because i've heard it so often by rewatching 90210.
Maria Rakel A musical theater actor should never strive to be exactly like the original. They should put their own spin on it and use their own unique talents.
KELLENEVANDRA Well that’s how Spring awakening is. It’s the original speed of the song and most of the songs have unnatural hand movements. It’s just a part of the show, like in the original version they had microphones that they pulled out whenever they sang but not every production has that.
Is that really how you would touch yourself? Because I don't buy it. Don't get me wrong, you sang it beautifully...but this is not supposed to be about singing pretty. As the first number of the show, we immediately get a feel for who Wendla is and what the show is all about. Being afraid to be vulnerable, to feel, to touch. I felt some choices you made were a bit much. Think of it as if she's looking in a mirror at herself. Then see what comes from that. This was ok. Not bad. Keep discovering.
Guys...the hand movements are supposed to be kind of unnatural-looking. Have you seen Spring Awakening? lol
BrookeInProgress yeah, they are supposed to be a little more natural 😅
That is because it's sign language

WOOO!! RSAMD FTW!!
Chills!
Thumbs up!! :)
Wow she’s just as good as Lea Michele! great work!
0:24 Nothing like the original. Lea Michele's voice is perfect. but good job!
Maria Rakel lea's voice is fine but I didn't like her version

this chick can sing but i wish the song had been slowed down a bit, and i thought her hand movements were a little unnatural looking

It's spring awakening. It's supposed to be akward.
You should watch it tho.. it's a great musical!

her handmoves 😂🙈 but great voice
Lol they are intentional. The hand moves are like that in almost every production.
what about Lea
better than Léa Michele
beautiful voice. but the movements look a little to reherced. losen up and have fun with it!
Losen up with the movements. Really perfect voice. But the movements are to much. Just do what feels right
Not bad but I prefer the original cast
