    I have an SG ‘61. I had been playing a Strat exclusively and wanted a Gibson style guitar. You know, Mahogany, set neck, humbuckers and two volumes and two tones. I thought I really wanted a Les Paul but after trying one out I realized it was too heavy and uncomfortable for me. However, the SG was and is a perfect fit. I love it.

      Most Gibson models seem to have something about their design that can be ergonomically challenging. I find Les Pauls to be well-balanced on a strap, but they are heavy and are awkward to play sitting down. SG’s tend to be lighter and comfortable to play sitting, but they can be very neck heavy and can be awkward to play standing. 335’s are very comfortable, but they can be too big for some people. But overall, if you can find an SG that isn’t too neck heavy, I find that to be the best design. If it’s not too neck heavy, they are comfortable to play standing or sitting, and they’re typically lighter than other Gibsons. In terms of sound, all Gibson models sound great. But I love that the SG seems to have less inherent low end than a LP or 335. I find that it fits in a mix better. SG is the winner for me!

    My first brand new guitar I bought was my 1994 Gibson SG Standard in Heritage Cherry. It's been a heluva guitar that never let me down. Stays in tune. Always. I've had no problems with it from day one and it's been around the world twice with me during my military enlistments. I replaced the humbuckers and the stock by choice, not component failure. It took me 9 months of paying on this guitar before I could take it home from Roselyn's Music and call it mine, but that feeling once I got her home ... priceless. The hardshell case still smells like it did the first time I opened it on that mid-October Saturday in 1996.....

    From Leo: The SG is the only solid body in the gibson line that I enjoy playing. It is a easy handling, versatile instrument. Sometimes I purposely grab an SG to clean very clean and soft parts and it really surprises people. People are so used to Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Derrick Trucks and others who used the instrument for only hard, aggressive use. Another great feeling guitar from them that I really enjoyed was the Epiphone Wilshire. I don't know why it is not more popular.

    My (too long) SG story: Never liked SG’s when I was younger (maybe I only associated them with Angus and heavy metal). Couple years ago I bought a mint 1972 SG “deluxe” for a deal… just didn’t like it & sold it - then again 72’s deluxe SG’s we’re an odd one (or perhaps I didn’t yet appreciate what SG’s were). Last year got a 2019 SG w/maestro in trade and was surprised what a nice guitar is was but still didn’t fully appreciate the SG thing - traded it for a PRS Silver Sky. I found I wanted those SG’s back for some reason … I usually don’t have trade/sale regret… Couple days ago traded a Custom Shop strat for a mint 1990’s SG Custom (exactly like yours) and am blown away how great it is. I think I prefer it over my R8 LP (which by comparison feels sorta like a less expressive “log”… still great but the SG is so nimble). Sometimes it’s less about the guitar and more about us and what point we are in the journey… I finally understand the genius of the SG design and glad I re-discovered it. Your videos helped me decide to not abandon the SG… thanks 😊

      Yeah my guitar was to put my yesterday was supposed to be a faded. LOL I have a 2005 special I bought it used. Apparently someone made a special order or maybe it was a ordered by a music store but it has a wine red finish high gloss. It feels like a piece of glass. Beautiful guitar when I bought it I could still see somewhat better than I do now. And I was able to kind of get the feel of the guitar plus I know what it looks like in my head from when I was able to see. My first guitar was a also used 69 or 70 SG standard and heritage Cherry with a bixby. Different machine from what I have now. The 2005 SG special it's really a great guitar. In the near future I'm going to be ordering some pickup covers even possibly a new pickguard you know and also thinking in the future future depending on what it'll cost and if I trust someone to do it putting a inlays on the front board. That could help me a bit because otherwise I really have no idea where I am on the fretboard anymore. With the small mother of pearl dots I can't tell I can't see it. But it's actually a good thing because I'm playing by feel sort of muscle memory as they say. I had a 28 year guy without touching a guitar and then I had it in my mind maybe I want to play again and I bought the sg. And trying to play a guitar after 20 close to 30 years is hard enough trying to play it when you can't see it oh that's a whole other story man. I probably have the same model guitar you do. The pickups on my special off 490 are in 4902 thank you and sorry about the long comment I get carried away sometimes LOL sincerely us, Bob the blind bedroom guitars

    I picked up an Epiphone SG Standard inspired by Gibson model a week ago and it's unbelievable. I owned the CME exclusive SG Standard and an SG Faded a few years back and the Epiphone really didn't fall short anywhere. The pickups are clear and versatile and I am so in love. I am a Tele player, but my second favorite guitar is an SG and I think you make a great point it's twangier and maybe that's why I prefer it to any other Gibson model.

  • @Rogijimbex

    Really nice playing and presentation. Fender player all my existence until a chambered Gibson Les Paul entered 9 years ago. Sounded so smooth and wow - I could actually get along with a Gibson! Then a while ago an Epiphone SG Classic (Special) w/ P90's entered the armory. Wow again. Punchy sweet. Then graduated to an Epiphone SG Prophecy w/ Fluence pickups. More splendor. Just last month I couldn't stand it anymore - bit the bullet & purchased a Gibson '61 SG w/ Maestro Vibrola. My God...I missed the boat all these years.. a wondrous entity - sounds and looks beyond any hope I had for justifying the expense. I notice you haven't a Vibrola equipped SG - I'm assuming because of the potential for tuning issues. I use a vibrato bar for subtle effects on my Stratocasters and do the same with this. Tuning has not been an issue - as long as the rules are followed...No running - and no dive bombing in the pool! Kind of weird how Gibson combined the 61 body with the 63/64 Maestro assembly. Best of both worlds I guess. Thanks for your take.

      Yeah the SG is some guitar huh. It's funny cuz Les Paul the less pool was never one of my favorite guitars. So my first guitar I bought in probably 1981 was a used SG standard and heritage Cherry with a Bixby that didn't work lol. Inflation it would be you know not the greatest price lol. But it's funny I also Gibson firebird like you that was my favorite guitar and it took me decades before I can afford one. And I'll tell you I love that guitar dearly. If you do read this comment I'd be curious to know what year your guitars are. I have a it's not a Gibson but it's the closest thing I'll get to an online on order. That's the Epiphone 1959 Les Paul standard tribute. I've heard a lot of good things about it. So I figured for it was 800 bucks here in the states and I'm getting a 15% discount so I'm getting it for $680. So I figured what the hell I don't know anything it's electronically you know it seems to be you know like I said the closest thing I'm going to get to something like that. It's got the burst fucker two in the neck and three in the bridge and basically the electronics are the same as a USA made gibson. Anyway time will tell when I get it LOL well that's about it I just thought I comment because when you mentioned that you said you had a SG I think you did have one and the firebird and the Les Paul are kind of struck a bell. All right wherever you are keep safe man keep playing enjoy that firebird I do. Sincerely yours, about the blind Patric guitarist PS Johnny Winter was my favorite guitarist and is why I long for and applying for a firebird. I'm thinking about getting the mojo tone Johnny Winter signature pickups. I'm not a kind of guy that is turned on by signature guitars or anything like that that's just not my style. But this pickups seem to be really nice. Roses on also makes an El Nico 8 firebird pickup which is also kind of whispering in my ear LOL

    Thank you Jack - you are crusading for a very special guitar. I LOVE my SG. I recently bought a 1970 SG standard. I am a jazz player - I use a L5 CES and an ES-175 CC. However I love straight out rock n roll as well. The SG absolutely beats my 2018 R8 Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop for playability, sound and comfort. The 1970 SG just SINGS and roars into life when pushed a little. It is fantastic for clean shimmering sounds and the sutain! Oh man it sings for so long. THe guitar is incredibly resonant and I am selling on the R8 Les Paul because compared to the SG it isnt even close. Keep up the good work, Jack. BTW I appreciate the precision of your playing and your ability to communicate through your notes. Peace.

  • @VintageRadius
    @VintageRadius 3 года назад +3

    Great video. The SG really is its own beast. You mentioned the difference in pickup spacing with the neck pickup sitting closer to the bridge than a Les Paul. I think that really contributes to the clarity of the SG neck pickup which doesn't as easily get muddy like a LP. The bridge pickup of the SG also sits just slightly closer to the bridge/tailpiece than a LP does. The spacing difference in the bridge pickup is less but still about 1/8 of an inch. In both cases this reduces bass and would tend to increase treble and high mids. With pickup height set fairly low you get a lot of clarity, the highs are sweetened a bit and the mids are forward. To me the SG is very different than a LP and really distinguishes itself within the Gibson lineup. BTW I'm in the camp of being a fan of the "teardrop" pickguard over "batman" style and I've also never had an issue with neck dive. My only complaint about my SG is that I'm constantly chasing the relief and tweaking the truss rod to bring it back.

    • @JackFossett
      @JackFossett  3 года назад

      I’m a fan of both pick guards at this point - originally I was all batwing, then I went through a 61 half guard phase. Now I just love a good SG.

  • @ryanhdmc
    @ryanhdmc 2 года назад +1

    I love SG’s! Honestly, they sit a little wider on the shoulders than a Les Paul so it’s immediately more comfortable. I love the tone, it’s more focused than an LP to me. They also have some of my favorite playability Up the fretboard. I even love the different pickguard shapes. I have a 2016 standard with the batwing and a 2020 ‘61 with the maestro and they’re equally as cool.
    Now if I could get a white 3 pickup custom, I could complete my trifecta!

    Great hommage to the Gibson SG - thank you Jack! It took me a while and several different guitars before I found out that the SG is my absolute favorite. I own a 61 reissue, a Special and - most recently - a Derek Trucks signature SG. In my mind it's the most versatile guitar which allows a broad variety of different sounds and styles. Other than the LP, the SG for me is much better to handle because of it's more ergonometric body. And still the coolest guitar on the planet .....

No guitar case hot and cold rain and snow marathons of hard rock. Its been soaked with booze sweat and covered in smoke but still plays like the day it was made. One thing people never mention which 100% makes a difference between this and a les paul is that everything is shifted over to the left more (right if you're lefty) and so when you hold it in a normal position you're strumming closer to the bridge as opposed to a les paul. Also explains why it could potentially have neck dive
