My 16 year old followed your steps and successfully replaced our broken actuator in about an hour. It’s the first time he’s ever done anything like this. Thank you. It was a fun father son project.😊

Thx for the tips. We had a broken water dispenser. We got it done with your help with the water tube (PITA) only to find that both the ice dispenser and water dispenser both make a kind of slow machine gun noise and the light was flashing, and they don't deliver much either. After 10 seconds the water dispenser started working OK though. We took it all apart, looked for shorts or broken connectors no luck. Finally on a whim we unplugged the new water dispenser actuator connector from the board and it all started working! So we taped off the connector, put it all back together and then found that the water dispenser no longer works, but ice is back again. Aaaaarrrggh! Gonna leave it as-is. The water is useless anyway as connected to an RO system with low pressure. It looks better now though lol

Thank you for that whim!!! Had the exact situation....read your comment and thought What the ---- um...heck.....lol...Took the button side apart - pressed the ribbon in hoping it somehow did something...and re-assembled it all....BAM....perfect......I think sometimes things are like when we were kids (older kid in my case) and somehow blowing in the Atari game cartridge made it work...lol....Thanks again!

Thank you ! It's been many years our acturator was broken . We were able to change it without problems . Little tips for the water tub . From under , we insert a little wooden stick to guide the tub into the main hole. It helped a lot !

As an airplane maintainer, I know the hard parts are never the actual job. On our rental's fridge the front plate is a different style (discontinued) and was sealed in place with double-stick tape. I was lifting the whole door trying to get it out. Someone on the parts website mentioned tape and I went to town with a pair of old ID cards, shoving into the cracks and crevices. Once that had all peeled off it did in fact lift out as advertised. My screws were rusty, but not unmanageable. The rest of the fittings looked identical. I used a 'wooden stick' as a guide for the water hose's return to service, plus the soap and the pliers. I had avoided taking off the circuit board but it was no good and I followed your lead there with success. Anyway the fridge looks like new and everyone is impressed. So glad this video is available as a resource!

Just performed this repair today on the exact fridge. Tutorial was a great help, everything went smoothly except for the water tube. Took about 10 minutes to finally get it back in. Other than that, it was a breeze. Also, I did not remove the handle and it posed no problems with completing the repair.
    Thanks for a great tutorial!

Taking a minute to THANK YOU for this awesome tutorial. Gave me all the info I needed. For mine (Kenmore Elite version) there is no need to remove to the freezer handle as it isn't in the way of anything. Like others said the water line can be stingy. Manipulating that in and out of the hole is the most difficult part of the job. After 16 years, mine wasn't that bad actually I was ready for the worst.. No problems at all. Got the new one in (Genuine OEM part) and boom works perfect. Thanks again for sharing this.

Replaced my actuator this afternoon and everything worked as instructed 👍🙂. I would like to point out that the water hose was much easier to remove than to reinsert it. The tube is not very flexible so there’s a definite need for patience. I used petroleum jelly and it worked great. Thank you 😊

Dude. I had so much trouble with the water tube. Your tips on removing the circuit board and the soap really helped me out. Other videos kept the board in place and through magic of editing they did it. This should have been a simple repair but the tube made it so difficult. They should have had more length of tube or a different way to attach it. Thank you!!

The video was a big help. RR use of a drill bit as guide to reinsert water tube was a great idea, I cleaned inside of tube holder and water line of ay calcium deposits then with a Qtip sprayed with cooking oil spray. Reinstalled the unit with three screws Using the the drill bit as a guide push water line with needle nose pliers in place , Thanks Appliancepartspros & RR

I should do a video of what this repair looks like for the average guy. First off, the screws holding the outer plate were so rusted I could not remove them all. The tops broke off of two. Then the wires from the new actuator broke off on the circuit board and so I had to superglue it. It's a miracle there is still an electrical connection. Getting the water tube back down through that hole was a devil and so I stuffed a drill but up in there to help feed it through but it did look hopeless there for a while. Finally, the ribbon that powers the face plate would not stay in so I had to tape it. I put it in upside down at first so it didn't work. I dropped tiny screws repeatedly. And there was a certain amount of justifiable swearing throughout. But I did get the actuator for about $9 on Amazon or eBay. And by some miracle, I did fix it within a couple hours and by some miracle it is working now. Thanks to this video showing what the super easy install is supposed to look like or I might not have even attempted it.

The placement of everything made this repair so difficult. The water tube was a pure PITA. They didn't build this to be repaired.

For what it's worth, on my refrigerator (which looks identical to the one in this video), the set screws that hold the handle onto the door were actually hex-head screws, not Torx. Not sure exactly what size they are, but a 3/32 driver worked perfectly.

Video helped out insofar as getting the plastic hose back into the water spout. I hope GE redesigned that process in newer models. Ideally, it would just snap in and lock in place versus having to use lubricant, plyers and an inordinate amount of patience and trial and error. That’s not good engineering or design.

In case anyone ends up here repairing their water dispenser and after reassembly the water and/or ice starts clicking / pulsing very fast when pressing the paddle, try unplugging the wiring for the lights. My aftermarket actuator fit perfectly fine but there is something with the lights that is causing the panel to malfunction. Unplugging it fixed it immediately.

Ah, figured it out. Turns out that the end of the ribbon cable that goes to the button display had come loose and shifted during the repair. After adjusting both ends, the end going to the control board and the end going to the button display, I was able to use the dispenser!

Mine did the same. Took it out and replaced a few times to make sure it was seated correctly and it still did it. I tried the light button on the controller just to see if it was affecting everything. Initially the light pulsed just like the water and ice maker did, but then it stayed on steady. After that the water and ice dispenser have been working normally. I have no idea how or why, but I know enough to not ask too many questions. It works again…all that matters
