I have this deck and I love it. I’m a storyteller by nature so this deck and I clicked right away. I’m mixed race and it was very cool to be able to find a story in this deck that corresponded with each part of my heritage. Some other Tarot-tubers I have seen review this deck admit that they find some of the stories distracting because they’re so dark. But I see it as a wonderful opportunity to address the shadow side of each of the cards. It’s all about perspective and I’m curious to hear what you think. 😊
I didn't find the stories dark at all actually... but I grew up with Grimm's Fairy Tales and I am used to traditional stories being a little more intense than their fluffified versions! I feel like the cards and stories are very well balanced with lots of layers to dig into.
I love that you reviewed the deck from the perspective of if you don’t read the stories. At the same time the key factor that makes me add more decks to my collection is the variance and the ability to deep deck dive through different subject areas. I’m a huge lover of stories, fairy tales and folk lore. I have both the deck and the book. Love love love it.
Me too!!! I love the ability to deep dive but I wanted to bring something a little different to this walkthrough because there are so many people who don't want to 'have' to study a deck to 'get it'. I had that issue with another Fairytale deck and it prevented us from bonding as well as we could have.
I've been a fan of the artist for a long time and watched along over the years as they created this deck. To see the tarot community love it as much of they have makes me really happy.
Every time I see that 3 of swords card it just KILLS me! I was told that story when I was very little and the tragedy has made a long lasting impact on me.
My go-to fairy tale deck for sure is the Mary Hanson-Roberts illustrated and Dorothy Morrison written “Whimsical Tarot” Tower~ Big Bad wolf, 3 little pigs house burning down.. The Chariot~ Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage pulled by mice… The Fool~ the Wizard of Oz Scarecrow wandering off a cliff… King &Queen of Pentacles~ Robin Hood & Maid Marian.. I’ve never seen a more perfectly conceived deck for the message of fairy tales. Some cards are nursery rhymes too. Highly recommended of you like the stories to pertain to the traditional meanings
I lovelovelove this deck and the Beneath The Moon book. From what I've heard, Yoshi said that she wanted to give readers enough of the stories to know what they were about in the hope that those who wanted to know more would delve into the mythologies for themselves, given that many myths/legends often have more than one version.
@@shaneem818 Received the deck and the book a week ago today and I adore them. I'm so looking forward to deep diving into the images, especially the ones that offer a different perspective than that of the RWS; those to me can offer many valuable insights.
Just bought this deck off Amazon. It was in my price range(cheap). It should arrive tomorrow. Thank you for this in depth review. Can't wait to unbox it.❤
Damn you... I wasn't even half way through your walk through before I got online and ordered this deck, lol. It's beautiful. Thank you for doing a walkthrough of this deck ♡
Love the deck. Love the book. The color palette, the cultural diversity, the card stock...I am happy to have this deck and read through the different short stories to get a taste of different tales I’ve never heard of. Yoshi did a great job in my opinion. And the cherry on top is the cards don’t overflow out the card compartment in the box.
Thank you for the video, Lisa! The diversity of mythology shown in this deck was one of the things that made me jump at it. Really looking forwards to diving deeper into each narrative and learning more.
The critters in the Moon card are Japanese raccoon dogs, which you may also hear called tanuki. They're canids, but they kinda look like raccoons, thus the name.
Thank you for this review. I just got this deck and used it last night for the first time. I think I will have to look at each story and summarise. I wonder if it is going to be a struggle. I guess only time will tell.
You are such a bad influence on me! I paused half way thru this vid and went to Ebay and bought this deck and "Beneath the Moon" book! Hubby is gonna be upset... 🤣(As if I need ANY more 🤪) ROFL
The box and cardstock reminds me of the Illuminated Tarot. Such a beautiful deck! Thank you for everything you do, Lisa! Love watching all of your videos!
Thank you for this comment I just got this deck. The card stock is amazing. The Japanese tarot poetry has the same card stock. I’m going to look at the tarot that you spoke about and see if I can purchase.
Just bought this deck last night on Amazon...i was browsing for tarot cards with a guidebook and this one clicked with me! it had one day delivery so it’s supposed to coke today...I’m new to tarot and this is my first deck...my younger sister has two boxes of tarot cards On of them is nightmare before Christmas And the other is for beginners. My sister is gonna help me learn about tarot readings!
Thank you for the walk through! I wasn’t sure if I would like the art and I’m always skeptical of cardstock. But I have the Affirmators and love it, and I like the art a lot now that I’ve seen all the cards. Thank you! Just placed my order!!!
i also hesitated at first because this kind of artwork usually doesn't speak to me that much. But with this deck it is different. It is truly beautiful and I love the color palette, the whole design with the backs and the borders and also the box. It is so vibrant and soothing at the same time and the stories are very creative and intelligently translated into the R.W. Tarot.
I'm a novice tarot reader (I've only started trying to do my own readings in the last year or so), but I've found this deck very easy to work with so far. The way that it hews close to Rider-Waite while still offering a slightly different perspective works really well for me and my skill level. Also, I love that you can choose to go more in-depth by reading the stories and incorporating them into the reading, but you can also choose to just go off the images and traditional card interpretations. Or, in my case, start with the latter and work your way up to the former.
Oooh that's great feedback! Thank you for sharing your experience as someone who is new(ish) to Tarot - we don't always hear from those who are new in the comments on these videos so I really appreciate you speaking up so others can have that other perspective.
This is so gorgeous! I’ve been looking for a good deck to replace my Happy Tarot as my inner child deck, and these myths and stories and cartoony art style might do the trick.
Thank you for doing this type of review! I'm still learning tarot and find it a challenge to read with decks that venture too far off RWS. Your video tells me exactly what I needed to know ❤️
I’m struggling with this deck. I’m using it with the keywords. I’m here trying to find out more. Maybe I need to buy the story book to truly embrace the beauty of this deck. Unsure .. just yet
I did watch a few walkthroughs but I always appreciate different opinions and takes on decks. :) I think we all add to the conversation and you can never know who's aha moment you''ll be responsible for! :D (I had one with the Spacious tarot and this one too, because I decided not to get it but than I saw you using it in one of the live readings and went and ordered it X;D) At least I tell myself this as the reason to share my videos on decks everybody have already talked about :D The bag is perfect!
I love watching multiple walkthroughs for decks too LOL. This deck performed SO BEAUTIFULLY during live readings. I was surprised at how easy-breezy it was to read with, actually.
Lisa Papez especially when I'm waiting for mine to be shipped 😅😅 my order was a preorder in the end for the reprint so the deck is popular for sure! And so happy to hear! Can't wait to play around with it XD and possibly trim it down XD
I just got this deck yesterday and I absolutely love it. I wish every Tarot deck used this cardstock. I think it's my all time favorite. My other fairy tale Tarot is the Baba Studios Fairytale Tarot, which I still love. But I think this one, with its inclusivity and diversity, will be my go to. I had the Lisa Hunt deck but traded it. I didn't feel like many of the story choices always fit the Tarot cards the way I see them. Tarot of the Divine fits better with my personal keywords and such. Amazing deck. I'm so excited and am going to do a deep dive with this one. 💙
What a thoughtful gift! I have the book and agree that the the versions of these stories serve as more of a jumping-off point for our own deeper dive, should we choose. I really appreciate the time and research that Yoshi Yoshitani put into the deck. And I love how this video focuses on whether the deck can be used without having knowledge of the stories. Thanks for sharing (and the shoutout 💕) 🌸💜
Yes!! I'm really enjoying just straight-up reading with it. It seems to have a beautiful balance of enough in the image to remind you of the story if you're familiar (or whet the appetite) and enough nods to RWS imagery to just be *readable*. I pulled it out for some live readings I did on my other channel and it was a joy to read with!
I love this deck and I think it would be great for beginners. The stories add a nice touchstone for each card. However I was familiar with many of these stories and recognized them easily in the cards on my first flip through, so maybe that has influenced my opinion. Maybe the only card that I don't agree with is the four of swords. Like you I consider it to be a calmer sort of rest than the fenrir story.
nice to meet you. I am Japanese. I can't speak English well, so I use a translator. This tarot card is the same as the first one I bought, and I love it 😊 I've loved Disney and fairy tales since I was little, and I'm happy when characters from stories I know appear. The compatibility is good as you can see. I have a question for you, who introduced this tarot card in the video, have you obtained permission from the seller of this card to use it for fortune-telling or RUclips? Even if I look at the booklet or box, I can't find the contact information. Also, I couldn't find a video contributor using this tarot card on a Japanese fortune-telling RUclipsr, so I'm sorry for my poor English, but I asked a question. I am glad if you could tell me. Thank you 🌈✨
I have this deck too. I got it just last week. I don't have the book though. I feel like the deck is too beautiful to read with yet. It's so pretty, and I love it. 😊❤
Oh Lisa, I should not have watched this! lol I had seen some of the cards floating around the internet the last few months and while I thought it was pretty I wasn't really interested. Now I want this deck! It's so lovely! This is the first time watching one of your walk throughs may result in me buying the deck.
the sun card is either Horus or Ra I'm leaning more towards Ra since he is the primary solar deity in Egyptian mythology, Osiris has a normal human head but with green skin just an FYI . I'm still on the fence with this deck I may have to watch more walkthroughs.
Hi, Lisa! Hello from Manila, Philippines! 🌞 I just got this deck today (haven’t unboxed it yet haha) after being on the fence about it since its release. Just want to say that your review and Kelly’s of The Truth in Story made me pull the trigger-finally. Thank you for this lovely and insightful walkthrough! 🌈
Thank you for the really nice review of this deck. I just recently purchased it and I do love love love it too! I agree with you on the 4 of swords, it's the only card I can't quite wrap my head around for the restful look of the 4 of swords. I was thinking Snow White with her laying in the casket looking like she had died but was only sleeping would be a better choice. I am so happy I purchased it though and the artwork on the cards is even prettier in person. Thanks again for a fun review!
I loved the book of the deck!!the images are so colourful..ya know ..but omg u have to read all the pages...have you finished reading the amazing book?
I would love to live beneath the moon so fantasies of all kinds would emerge...but as a dual world we live in..we kind of have to go through whatever random life brings...
Hi Lisa.. That is really very nice of Gina. I am happy for you. Thank you two, (her for getting it and you for reviewing it) for the review. I appreciate your idea that it needs to be "usable" as a tarot. I see the general tendency of having fancy things but many modern decks just make it more difficult.. Sometimes almost impossible, to read tarot with them. Peace be with you. Lior
Does anyone know of a cross reference page that could be put in with the table of contents?. I love the deck and her book but the table of contents order is confusing and I don't like having to be slowed down and going back and forth between the little whit book that came with the deck and the beneath the moon wonderful book. Ideas???thanks Lisa for your fabulous rrview.
I'm really glad this deck is currently unavailable in Amazon Mexico because otherwise I'll be out of a few dollars before researching it more. After going through every preview of the accompanying texts (the LWB and the full book) available on Amazon I realized the connections between the stories and the cards are in most cases extremely shallow or weren't thought out properly; see for example Strength were the lass is holding Ammit, an Egyptian female deity, who is actually supposed to be the prince of the Scottish ballad the card is based on just because Yoshi (Yoshi doesn't use pronouns BTW) choose to. The summary of Beauty and the Beast given in Beneath the Moon is to vague to be referred to as Chinese (it could literally any other of the European versions or even the one from Disney) and Moses as the eight of cups is just the Dreamworks version. Isis has some issues with her representation (that is not her headdress!) A princess killing all of her suitors if they can't answer three riddles but finally marrying one just because you had to wrap up you Opera is a bit odd as the Queen of swords, and The Little Mermaid as The Fool is far too discouraging (you'll have to give up what makes you You, every step will literally feel like walking on knifes, you'll have no voice, someone else will take your place, those that love you will try to help you and yet it will all be in vain at the end and your destiny will still be in the hands of others! Just because of a whim!). I still might get it if the price is right just for the aesthetic
Thank you for the heads up about Yoshi preferring not to use pronouns! I'll do my best to remember that in the future! SInce both story AND art are subjective in their interpretation, it totally makes sense that this deck will illicit a wide variety of responses/reactions! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
That's Ra, the egyptian sun god for the sun card... And Osiris is not a sun god In the slightest... He's a god of rulership, sovereignty, fertility and the dead
I was resisting this deck until I learned it had a companion art/story book. Then I HAD to get it. I agree, both the deck and book are stunning! I think my favorite images are Judgement and the Nine and Ten of Wands. I'm a sucker for skulls and Judgement gives me strong Avatar: the Last Airbender vibes just because of the staff and staring up into the sky lol
@@Lisa_Papez Sure! My first thought when I saw the card was about cycles and endings creating new beginnings. The Numinous Tarot by Cedar McCloud was one of my early tarot decks and what they said on the Ten of Wands about needing to return to community when the burdens become too much has stuck with me. Then the recent Cosma Visions Oracle deck which made the minors' panoramics be a continuous loop where the Ten goes right back into the Ace just highlighted that aspect of the Ten again for me. I write fiction stories too and so the end of the Wands suit always reminds me of how much work goes into even fun and creative endeavors. But the payoff (like the tree in this card) can be worth it! Now trees and bones are both symbols I'm really drawn too (for example, I adore the Antique Anatomy Tarot deck), and I see trees as always positive and bones as neutral that will be influenced by the context of the reading and surrounding symbols. So that definitely influences my reaction to this Ten of Wands.
@@AisicsRule LOVED your thoughts on this! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm eagerly awaiting my copy of the Numinous Tarot by Cedar (alongside their new Threadbound Oracle) so loved hearing those thoughts too!
@@Lisa_Papez Oh you did buy the Numinous Tarot too? That's awesome! I remember you said you backed the Threadbound Oracle. I did too. I'm so excited for it!! I cannot wait for the deck and novel to be in my hands. :D
Hii! Do you still have the guidebook? If yes can you please send it to me? I lost mine long ago, and lately i feel like the deck has been calling me to send me a message. When i say send it i mean like photos via email.
Why is the high priestess always holding a book?i mean she does not even read the book..she only holds it..the moon her greatest company that is what it seems..
she does not need to read the book, she already knows its contents. The high priestess is about knowing unknowable, mysterious things, she uses her intuition to guide her in all things. The book is a symbol of knowledge and the fact that she does not look like she 's reading it shows us that she already knows.

A princess killing all of her suitors if they can't answer three riddles but finally marrying one just because you had to wrap up you Opera is a bit odd as the Queen of swords, and The Little Mermaid as The Fool is far too discouraging (you'll have to give up what makes you You, every step will literally feel like walking on knifes, you'll have no voice, someone else will take your place, those that love you will try to help you and yet it will all be in vain at the end and your destiny will still be in the hands of others!
Sun god portrayed here by Horus 🌞
That's Ra, the egyptian sun god for the sun card... And Osiris is not a sun god In the slightest... He's a god of rulership, sovereignty, fertility and the dead
Lol, whoops. Welp, thanks for clarifying for me. Clearly my memories of egyptian deities is VERY rusty 🤣🤣
@@Lisa_Papez no problem! And sorry if I sounded a little harsh, I'm just passionate cuz Ra is one of my patrons😅
@@ribbonexylophone835 Heh. I totally get it!! :D No worries!
From first look, I actually thought Three of Coins had something to do with ignorance and carefreeness about responsibility
I'd love to hear more about your thoughts on the 10 of Wands! What do you 'see' in that image?
@@AisicsRule YAS! I added numinous when we did the backerkit survey part... I just couldn't resist!
Hii! Do you still have the guidebook? If yes can you please send it to me? I lost mine long ago, and lately i feel like the deck has been calling me to send me a message. When i say send it i mean like photos via email.
i only counted 9 swords in the 10 of swords am i missing one?
There is a sword above her head
Why is the high priestess always holding a book?i mean she does not even read the book..she only holds it..the moon her greatest company that is what it seems..
she does not need to read the book, she already knows its contents. The high priestess is about knowing unknowable, mysterious things, she uses her intuition to guide her in all things.
The book is a symbol of knowledge and the fact that she does not look like she 's reading it shows us that she already knows.
