I love how using a long exposure to create much more drama and impact in pictures. But what if we didn't use a long exposure when we took the photograph? Here's a super easy and effective technique I use to recreate the long exposure look...and it works an absolute treat!

Great tutorial, as I have been experimenting with long exposures for some time and spending up to 5-6 hours on a single shot. This helps to add more drama and still make the photo look good. Great advice and great explanations, very , very helpful. Many thanks for sharing

I can count on my hands how many times i serious went out to shoot landscape so im a noob lolz two weeks ago i bought a second hand Tamron 15-30 2.8vc for 270 dlollar (yay for actions where no one bids) so i can start shooting landscape and i did try this and it worked great . Great place. Just watch out for the wave that comes over the slipway from behind you. I got completely drenched there and so did my camera but fortunately no damage.

Great video Glyn and had me searching through my Lightroom catalogue looking for images to use this technique on. I have one image of an old celtic burial site and try as I might I can't seem to get the perfect effect around the edge of the stones. Keep up the fantastic work and thanks for sharing your knowledge in such a positive fashion.

super tuto ! no need to use gaussian blur when we use a soft brush ? if so, i prefer to use this brush method even for the car example.
Yeah exactly Marc...that will work. There's also the 'feather' slider in the Mask properties you could use to do exactly the same 👍
Hello Glyn, A terrific video and detailed presentation, thank you! I tried it on one of my photos and I do have a couple of questions.
1.) When you use the lasso tool to remove some of the selection in the image with the car, what do you do to apply the lassoed selection?
2.) When using the brush tool on the castle image, how do you get it to remove part of that selection? When I do it, it fills in with more masking.

Hi Thelma...thanks so much for the kind words.
Ok so to answer your questions...
1) To remove part a selection when using the Lasso Tool (as with any selection tool) hold down the Option (Mac) / Alt (Windows) key on your keyboard when using it.
2) When using Masks and a brush, using black as your foreground colour removes part of the selection, and white adds to the selections. However, if you're in Quick Mask Mode ... use 'black' to add more of the red overlay 'white' to remove the red overlay. Quick Mask by default is set so that the red overlay indicates what is 'not' being selected. If you prefer to use it so that the 'red' overlay covers what 'is' being selected, then double click on the Quick Mask icon in the Tool Bar. When doing this a small properties box opens up; change the setting in here to 'Masked' areas.

As for doing the effect on water I'd have to take a look at that. I am doing something soon on long exposure with water using Photoshop though...combining images.
This is so good, especially if you go out shooting landscapes and for get your filters.

Thanks Ray. I've never tried doing it to water but it would definitely be a bit more complex because of the movement. I'll take a look. I am doing something with long exposure on water and editing in a video soon though 👍
Silly question perhaps but doesn't the mask have an edge feathering option, rather than applying a manual Gaussian blur?
Not a silly question and yeah it does. Just another of the many ways to do the same thing in Photoshop. I've done the Gaussian thing for years and still forget about the Feather in the mask option...probably because I make a lot of selections when no mask is used / needed and it's become habit 😉
Great Video. Thank you for that. But I have sometimes the problem that the line between sky and motive is very blurred and not very sharp.
Ronald is this happening after you apply the technique?
@@glyndewis Thx for answering. It is the result. But I have seen that I have to select the sky to another layer and move the sky one or two pixels to bring it to a distance.
Great video. Im having an issue where even after I do the masking around an object, say a car, and the selection is off the mirror, masking off the mirror, it still pulls the mirror into the blur? Does that make sense?
Yeah I understand what you're saying there Scott...have you tried brushing it a little further off the mirror?

Good idea...not tried it yet but will look into that but not sure it will work due to the complexity of the water and how it moves.
@@glyndewis Thanks for the reply. The problem will be the selection, especially if there are many objects. I believe the suitable filter for this effect is motion blur. I'll get back to you if I have a chance to try it.
