  • In this mini-tutorial we'll be looking at why matching motion and cutting between alternating camera angles is especially useful when editing a fight scene.
    Using this technique you can:
    - Increase the pacing where you need it
    - Smooth out any issues with the choreography
    - Provide more visual information about the fight

Pro tip: hire people who know what they're doing, and make sure they know where the camera is... then you won't have to cut between takes just to sell each hit!

i wouldn't say this is much needed rather one of the most videos that
we all editors hardly get a chance to be aware of, 'editing a fighting scene'.
    Thanks for demystifying the techniques..🙏🎬

I love your videos but I don't like action scenes cut this way! The best action sequence is usually one continuous shot without zig-zagging around. I love the way John Wick filmed their sequences. But I guess if the film is not shot that way, cutting this way could save a bad action sequence.

Andy Liu agreed. A perfectly filmed scene needs no editing at all.

I like when fight scenes combine both of those traits. Have a long shot that shows several punches or kicks being thrown, but cut to a couple different angles during a counterattack or new element introduced in the fight. A perfect example of something like that is the raid movies. To this day, I have yet to find a more intense and consistently amazingly shot fight sequence.

Can't be bothered watching the whole video but go talk to Jackie Chan on why you are probably doing everything wrong in editing your fight scenes and indeed taking the generally terrible Hollywood approach vs the vastly superior Hong Kong cinema kind of editing approach that Jackie uses. His techniques and methods are sooo much better for editing fight scenes on so many technical levels and indeed just because they look much better and convey the speed, power and overall action much better in general.
