Getting older, I learned to give up most of the things that gave me joy. The sport of boxing, Star wars, Marvel, DC, Naruto and now Final Fantasy. At least I still have emulation.
Mi, i understand game, i now play whatever give me joy, anime i quit, many foods i like i quit, idea that i will have a nice career for a while i quit, is like one coment said, what kill you fast, is loosing little by little what make you happy
In a way yes but at the same time it's the franchise that saved financially the company, so final fantasy has been tied to money since the 1st installtment
I remember reading a game magazine before Final Fantasy IX was released and there was an interview with Sakaguchi where they asked him how many stories they can come up with for the franchise and Sakaguchi responded that they were just getting started. How ironic it is that we were already near it's end.
And yet applause, applause, nearly all reviews 10 from the criic in rebirth who cares, we have the industry we deserve, slop, eat the slop, taste it and dont you dare critic it, only good thing is Tifa, rest is meh
@Krysnha Yup. The story changes were godawful and shows that the team has no clue what VII was truly about. And the pacing horrible as well with meaningless fetch quests and copy paste open world checklist bs ala Ubisoft. And this was directed by someone who claimed Witcher 3 was a source of inspiration. Don't make me laugh. People need to seriously open their eyes to the mediocrity that is Remake and Rebirth.
@@GracelessTarnished But people, dont want to open the eyes, people prefer to be told what to do, and what to think, and little by little they become slaves
@@GracelessTarnished it's over for the Final Fantasy series, has been since FF10 as everyone has been sayin. Unless you count FF14 the MMO, which most old school FF fans don't. The golden age of the RPG is now in the hands of Western developers once again. Baldurs Gate 3. Divinity 2. Or even Witcher 3 as you mentioned but that's more action RPG.
Square being transparent about chasing the money helped me understand and accept that the developer I grew to love will never be the same and moved on. At least good JRPGs still release, just not from Square
So true, fans are ladders, to go higher the moment, they dont want or need, they get rid of you, is sad but reality, like hollywood we dont want you, dont cry, when you need us. For me as a lover of anime, i like original dragon ball, and like anime old retro anime and see modern anime, reduce to, shonen, isekai, tropes, no even good anime, come on, now all anime feels the same, and when something comes and look differen, op protagonizt, umberable male protagonis, side characters are better than leads, fanservice that are not even erotic, more like porn, same characters tropes over and over, anime is very well dead, anime is no longer creative, Miyazaki is last anime creator with a bit of creativity, rest anime is boring and reduce to nothing, more than spectacle
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels this way! 😂 I was telling my brother this, the other day, and he sent me this list… Final Fantasy VII (1997) Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII (2004) Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005) Last Order: Final Fantasy VII (2005) Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII (2006) Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (2007) Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete (2009) Final Fantasy VII G-Bike (2014) Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier (2021) Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis (2022) Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion (2022) Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2023) Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 (TBA) It’s just so sad how much they’re milking FF7. @@elhaymvanhouten7963 FF7 has still done more even though it was over a longer period of time. Skyrim is just constant rereleases of one game while Square is continually making new shit of one game from 25 years ago
I'm not trying to diss the game but there's been way better games I even thought legend of dragoon way back then was a lot better than ff7 it makes no sense why they would even milk it that much, Ineven think ffx was better
The Final Fantasy name myth is certainly good for marketing but the truth is that the original name was actually going to be Fighting Fantasy but it turned out another company had already made a property with that name and owned the trademark so they changed it to Final Fantasy instead. Frankly that change due to necessity was likely for the better.
I've let go of and made peace a long time ago with the fact that Square Enix is a totally different company than Squaresoft was. But i gotta admit it's still soothing to hear someone els so clearly express the opinions that I so strongly held all those years ago regurgitated back to me
Completely agree my dude. It's also important to note that literally everyone left SE other than Nomura and Kitase. There was this huge outage of talent in mid 2010s. It's not even "Squeenix" anymore, it's just Nomura-and-friends ltd.. Nomurco.
Kind of weird to hear Naoki talk about jrpgs like they are a dereogatory term...then goes on to embrace the western qualities of the people that made the term deragatory....dont understand why hes got the following he does.

I still can't get over how the FF7 remake was handled. Choosing to do this weird kind of episodic release where you buy chunks of the game over what is probably going to be years is insane. That's peak incompetence and completely disrespectful to your loyal fans.

@@graysonbrown9778 I mean they are alluding to a xiv repeat or aerith is capable of seeing alternate universes thing so it's possible that it's a alternate timeline "re telling" but it's not really clear.
FF11 was the final Uematsu and Sakaguichi project. At least the vanilla game they were both gone by the 1st expansion pack. I'm an old school FF11 player trust me when I say that was the last true amazing final fantasy, right down to the slashing piercing and blunt damage.
FF11 was a direct knock off of EverQuest replete with Final Fantasy art style, monsters, and characters. It certainly was not the last amazing FF since it wasn't a single player turn based game..it was an MMORPG. I love MMOs but let's not go and claim that it was something it wasn't. FF11 should never have had that name, it should have been Final Fantasy Online.
Absolutely. 16 is literally just genre chasing and pandering to a modern market. All Final Fantasy is now is just a hollow husk of trying to reclaim it's glory days.
@askiia8713 how is it genre chasing we don't get many hack and slash rpgs? Also are you forgetting ff14 is kind of a genre defining mmo it's the only current long running mmo to actually grow in popularity
@@crossdaboss8914 Where in my comment did I even approach 14. I didn't say anything about 14 because it IS actually decent. Even though I still think it's a tad bit overhyped (no I'm not an outsider I've been playing since Heavensward I've spent hundreds of days in the game) it is one of the better post 10 era titles. But I don't consider 14 that new of a title since it's been around for a while. And for the first point, yes it is genre chasing wdym we don't get hack and slashes, most modern games play like a simplified hack and slash aka typical action RPGs. I don't mind this since I'm a big character action game fan anyways and I no life games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, but I wouldn't call copying someone's homework genre defining. It's not just that either, I'm not gonna write a whole essay here, but it's quite clear FF16 is pandering to a more western, Game of Thrones, gritty mature audience. Now again, I don't mind that since 1) I've loved A Song of Ice and Fire before the show even got made and 2) some of my favorite stories of all time are dark fantasies like ASOIAF such as Wheel of Time, Mistborn, Berserk, and Warhammer anyways. I like the dark edgy shit. That's not the problem. It's just that it feels like they wanted to do this because that's what they think will sell well and what modern audiences want. Heck Yoshi P admits it as much. And in my opinion, to the detriment of what made Final Fantasy so special in the first place. The lack of RPG mechanics, linear level design, garbage sidequests, repetitive enemy movesets, lack of party system, etc. So many things that makes final fantasy so unique and charming just..gone. Now it's a railroaded action hack and slash with cutscene gameplay cutscene loop and nothing else. No exploration like old school FFs, no deep skill tree and RPG customization systems ike old school FF, just another run of the mill hack and slash. It's trying too hard to be something that it's not, and it didn't even work too well imo.
And now rebirth shit in the best and make everithing dumb, is so sad and i am not even a fan of FF, but i hate how one come and ruin or alter something and said i make it better because i am an artist and in reality it disresoect everithing
Dude I've been saying this for years, that From Software reminds me of Squaresoft. How they cranking out banger after banger without fail. And just as you pointed out, it is concerning. All great empires must fall. I truly hope Miyazaki can keep it going as long as possible. Man is a genius I'd hate to see him go in the way of Sakaguchi.
Nah, soulsborne is peak slop. Just rehashing the same mindless third person action game time and time again. If the series were truly great, it wouldn't be popular. It'd only have two or three entries at most.

@@friedchicken4735 kingdom hearts 3 could have been better with by looking at other action games like Devil may cry with its weapon switching mechanics and make kingdom hearts 3 Keyblade transformations function like Dante's weapon switching with the L and R buttons or the D-pad to select a weapon transformation. remove Osaka team and hire some other game dev team who knows action games by hand and by heart. 2nd fix with kingdom hearts 3 story is to have Old Xehanort appear and talk to sora in every world he's in and explain to Sora why Xehanort is doing this so the plot makes sense story wise ,so Sora has a real reason to challenge Xehanort's authority to prevent him from removing both Darkness and Light and resetting the worlds so there is no more darkness and corruption. have the Kairi and lea Sparing session be playable for more context. have Sora witness master Eraqus and master Xehanorts child hood as keyblade wielders in training explaining why Xehanort is doing all this. Have both colosseums from Olympus and the underworld be added content. All this would fix Kingdom hearts 3. I have a feeling and a direct Sumption that Dark Road Xehanorts story was going to be explained in kingdom hearts 3 since Xehanort needs context on why he's doing all of this. the problem with kingdom hearts games is that they are very short games if kingdom hearts games story wise was as long as Tales of Vesperia and Tales of symphonia games lets say a kingdom hearts game story wise being as long as 40 hours long kingdom hearts games would not need spin off games to explain new expanding story elements. like kingdom hearts 1 and Kingdom hearts Re-chain of memories could have been one game in one single run.
XI was developed under Sakaguchi's direction though and remained true to his vision. The main theme that he came up with for the game can be felt in almost every part of the game, and it really made FFXI stand out. So I'd say it deserves to be a numbered title. For me it's still the best and most unique MMO out there, there's just nothing else like it...
Give it time, i mean now single player games, some says is returning because there is an economical crisis, if these crisis was not here they would continue to do onlyine games only and battle royale, i mean the industry is full of cancer, with DLC, microtransactions, mobile games, there are some goods, some, but for every more or less game you have like ten or twenty gatcha games that look good and all devolve into nothing, even those taht suppose are player friendly eventualy cranck the difficulty so or you grind like an idiot or buy stuff, is sad, games are becoming bad, not because people dont like them because developers have these mentality
Square is doing a lot of good work with the HD 2D stuff and I was actually glad to see them sell off their Western studios and focus more on the Japanese side. If they could only get Final Fantasy right again then I would be happy to say with confidence that Square is back on top.
In the early 2000's goth and emo subcultures were becoming mainstream and corporatized. Square realised that goth and emo kids were huge fans of their games and characters, and that's when Square decided to let Nomura take more control over projects so that they could market their franchises to that demographic. That's when Square started to decline in quality, imo.
I couldn't even watch a playthrough of the remake. It was like watching a terrible anime in slow motion. There's just so. Much. PADDING. It's so self-indulgent I feel bloated and sick just watching it. At least shmups and farming sims are still holding strong and haven't been tainted yet.
not to mention the overt sexualization of a non sexualized series. the freaks will say dont turn the characters into sex objects and at the same time the freaks will push for men as sexualized as possible and try and attract coomers with their bait of female interactions...
And there no soul in whatsoever with the remake and don’t give me started on Zack voice actor and the story is even worst than OG is not bad from the OG but it could been way better compare to the tales of series even the Yakuza series
This is a great breakdown of the reasons why FFVII remake was such a turd. Replicated absolutely nothing that made FFVII great, and did everything that makes modern JRPGs, in particular the FF series as a whole, shit
And now FF16, doesnt even feel like a FF, and everyone applaud, is barely an JRPG, and yet people love it, they love it, so nothing will change, nothing will change
Just give it some time until the people's opinion start to sour, then they will see the mediocrity it really is. It happened with 15, so there's no doubt it's going to happen again.
What really grinds my gears is that in some interviews of FF7 Remake's development Nomura was going on about _"creating something new and unexpected",_ clearly having no self awareness being the director of yet another FF7 related bit of nostalgia bait. Meanwhile the actual "new and unexpected" thing known as Final Fantasy 16 now has to suffer the fate of being in FF7 Remake Trilogy's shadow right down to being trapped in the Playstation Exclusivity Dungeon.
To be fair, FFX-2 had the best combat in the entire series. And I'm not talking about the dresspheres. There are way better ways to implement a job class system. But that's the only good thing that can be said about that game.
Eh FFX-2 gets way more hate than it deserves in all honesty. Was it at the level of the previous entries? No not really. I'd say only FF2 and possibly FF8 are worse. But it wasn't nearly as bad as FF12 or anything afterwards. It had a silly plot, it had silly characters, and the gameplay was solid as you say. It was still fun if you weren't being uptight about it..but a lot of FF fans were really pissed considering the game disrespectful. I say no if you want disrespectful look at what they did to FF7.
Dragon quest VIII, IX and XI are proofs we don't need gimmick mechanics and hacks like Tetsuya Nomura. Dragon warrior monsters along with it's remakes and modern titles are better than pokemon. It's so refreshing to watch and listen to this video while DQ 11 playing in the background.
The VII remake is dogshit. In addition to time travel ghosts and a fuckton of plotholes they spoiled almost every major plot point of the original game. Hell, you even get the original games ending where you omnislash sephiroth and you haven't even left midgar. Now that you beat a giant ass kingdom hearts boss, chopped buildings in half, and kicked the shit out of sephiroth you're supposed to suddenly be impressed that sephiroth impaled a giant snake. It's bad enough that aeris isn't going to die, which is a bit like going back in time and saving bruce waynes parents or uncle ben, but the story is now fucked beyond all recognition. Defeating fate is now Chekhov's Gun, they have to keep deviating from the original now. After giving the rated yarrr version a go I thought I'd at least be impressed with the gameplay, and the combat is good, but it is so fucking linear and on rails. You never get to choose your party. You never get to choose who you run around as in the open world despite everyone having all the necessary animations etc. Most of the time you have some character holding your hand and guiding you in addition to invisible walls to prevent you from going where you want. Most of the level design is just a linear path. It's like the devs are terrified of giving the player any semblance of freedom or choice. It's as bad as FF XIII in some regards. Overall, it was pretty shit, all style and no substance.
That true Square Enix Doesn't even care about final fantasy. Square only care about making money from the franchise . Noruma is practically like the Michel bay of Square Enix, but worse. What make both similar is that they ruin fanciness that people care about. one ruined Transformers and other one ruined Final Fantasy. Both care about making things look cool rather than tell a good story. For my opinion Noruma is Worse because he like making his stories have no consequences and deus machina. His writing for his stories makes thing Convoluted because he not a good writer. kingdom Hearts is prime example of Nourma ideas in action. What the problem is he wants to make Final Fantasy Franchise to be like kingdom Hearts and his dumb ideas being creeping in the franchise since the merger with Enix
I think the problem is as you said, is that like you said, there is no respect, or care, producers, developers and more, no longer have respect for the fans, and the product they create, so no longer have the products that were groundbreacking, unique, if not tecnological, be in storytelling. For example, taking final fantasy 7, these game was groundbreacking in techonology and story telling, in the time, a master piece both in simbolic and more, but look the remake, they sell in pieces, the game, in pieces, and people clap the story for secondary caharacters, wich nealry none die, Tifa, Tifa, was the worst, part, they reduce the booba, they put her an under bra, the socks way to the kneww, to not show leg, these is disrespectful, it was like the Twering in she hulk, dont objectifie woman, but then they objectifie themself, why i mention these, Tifa, in the canon, she was, not only a bartender, she was, also, taking care, of the children, she wa the anchor of Cloud, it was her care of her friends and those arround her that make Cloud think i dont care the world, but mi friends live in the world, i dont care the world, but i care mi friends. And not only in Final fantasy, take Shadow of the colossus a game, that wiouth doubt, like it or not mark the game industry, wiouth Shadow of the colossus you wouldnt have amaizing hughe creatures that feel so real today, Shadow of the colossus was rich in lore and tecnology, taking the PS2 to the absoulte limit, and yet was before demons soul, do the idea of telling a sotry hide in details or not telling the story and let to interperteation or look for it, shadow of the colossus do it, and in the remake they fail completly, small details, from wander hold of the sword to how he run, things that the developer thin in how it should loo, from his hair to how he could run, and more, originaly they wanted to put 48 colossus, 48, they were ambitious there was respect in the game, in the new version they put collectables, collectables, totaly destroying the athmosfere, supposly of a barren land, the same with the land itself, the way wander run, wich the idea of that strange running was that he runs funny because he has being living in a small calory diet, the hair is untidy because long journe, in the suppose moder inspiraton of shadow of the colossus, wich name i dont remember i watch a bit, not only 8, half the colossus in a modern sisyem, o but is an indie game, i dont care, moder tecnology has fix many of the things that in the past you have to figth, so no excuse of indie, indie games have to be criticie, for me, is over games as art, games as a way to tell storys is done, is not even games as fun, is now money and microtransactions
My god, I could not agree more with all of this. I miss Squaresoft games. And I am so dead tired of the games now all looking vaguely the same, all of them in that same style, or everyone looking semi realistic but also like a model with SUCH great haircuts, every single character. I hate it.
Just look at how SE is milking tf out of FF characters with gacha games. Finishing “part 1” of kingdom hearts series with the 3. And butchering the ff7 remake was unforgivable too. Soulless corporation
I've said this in a video, but I feel Final Fantasy to be the Iron Maiden of the games industry: a once legendary apex of its kind, but now isn't quite the same since key people left. FF lost Sakaguchi; Maiden lost Birch. I still hold out hope for 16, though, since the problem people seem to be gone. No Nojima. No Toriyama. And most importantly, no Nomura.
Yeah, no kidding on the movie thing. FF is basically dead for me at this point, and I noticed a marked decline after 10. I gave up after 13 and haven't found myself regretting it yet.
I personally am not interested in MMO Final Fantasy how is that slander, if they just called it FF: Online I would have zero issue but it’s a literal mainline FF non-MMO fans got shafted by this decision

It's possible that the first online game they made was called XI because they might have thought that online was the way forward. But then XII did something different from that and XIII was a more linear version of X. They can't call the next online games XI-2 because it's coming after XIII so it got named XIV. XV was going to be a spin off of XIII and was going to be called Versus XIII which is arguable a worse title than XV.
Classic jrpgs never worked in the west. They had westernize to the 7th game just for the western market to accept (it barely constitutes a jrpg). There were individuals who would want jrpgs, but they were a very slim minority. So many games didn't make out of Japan. However, if these games were brought over, localization would have destroyed them. It is then for the best that the jrpgs were were translated but not localized by individuals so that the games could be appreciated for what they were meant to be. That said, ff7 is still fun.
Holy crap man I just tried FF7 Reunion. I've never known dialog so bad, so cringe. Everything also has this homoerotic undertone to it. Nomura is a stain on the franchise. Thankfully FF16 is turning out to be everything I want. There's hope.
FF15 was honestly the worst game I ever played. It literally ruined games for me. I didn't play video games for a whole year because they just seemed like an unenjoyable waste of time.
when FFX2 came out, I stop buying FF serie, because I've felt betrayed. everyone of my gamer friends who've played FF7 remake, they all siad it is a big pile of shit. FF serie suppose to be "What's The Next?". the new world, the new settings, the push of new.
Watched one blip on the video fast forwarding and the first thing I hear is a Nomura argument. Instantly disregarding this low effort opinion. Its the same shit all you spout and its been years. Hasnt your critique evolved since then to include some deeper arguments that would cause one to ponder their initial opinion? This is as low energy as they come.
You couldn’t pay me to play ff14. Goofy cat people everywhere, it’s embarrassing. I don’t understand the appeal of mmo’s in general. They are just another way for these huge companies to regularly take money from their fan base.
I'm torn on this video. On one hand I agree with a lot said, on the other I think this is just crying about post FFX. Hate the random ass thumbnail too.
You said Sakaguchi is one of the few people who understand Final Fantasy, but you also complain FF11 to be an mmo. It was actually Sakaguchi who forced his team to turn FF11 into an mmo.
I would really love if they made a real turn-base FF again. And by that I mean FF Tactics or Front Mission 3 style combat, none of the ATB bs... like chess. Even FFX was not ideal with Haste/Slow mechanic... can you imagine in chess your opponent suddenly makes 3 moves cause he rolled a double or some shit like that? Also, I saw people mention FF14 in the comments... I really don't get why so many people like FF14, I played the base game till the cap, and it was not only the worst FF game that I've ever played, but also the worst MMO I've ever played. Can someone explain to me why you liked FF14? WoW (pre pandas nonsense), Lineage 2 (pre Kamael), Guild Wars 2 (pre f2p) are generation ahead of FF14. WoW has absolutely amazing world, lore/characters, skills. L2 had vast and absolute insanely detailed gameplay mechanics from upgrading your weapon in 4-5 different ways, upgrading your skills in 4 different ways with sub categories, same goes to armor, character, etc. to absolutely insane player crafted economy with addition of dozens of classes which are all needed and have their own unique skills. That was a game where you could make in-game money by buffing other players' stats, by being a crafter and so many other things that encouraged you to actually progress your character and interact with other players. Not to mention hundreds if not 1000+ player castle seiges. GW2 had extremely well done combat, quests, and music... and in all of them it is interesting to explore the worlds they created... none of this I saw in FF14, honestly FF14 looks like a dumbed down console online rpg more than an actual MMORPG, there's no living world. I'm not trying to have a go, I just really don't get the appeal of 14, it's empty.
I bought FFXI for PC back in the day not realizing it was different than the rest of the series (why would I?). I set it up, got it installed, only to find out it was not like the others at all! Got a refund and waited 3+ years for another mainline release....
You half missed the mark with this one, particularly around the middle where you started ragging on the MMOs you think aren't worth playing. Nomura is far from being the biggest representative of FF. Sakaguchi himself has gotten big time into FFXIV, which is more or less Naoki Yoshida's love letter to the rest of the series (With particular love being given to FFVI). Even before that, FFXI, for all its failings, kept the company financially stable for the last decade and a half before XIV rose to prominence. It's definitely true that FF took a big hit when the merger happen. That's old news. But XI was already in development prior to the merger (came out in 2002, a year before the merge). It actually has incredibly rich stories, though it is definitely buried underneath MMORPG gameplay(and old Everquest style at that, ameliorated in present day). The merger was done so Square could have money, and Enix agreed to it basically to share in Square's IPs. Corporate restructured everything, and yeah, the focus turned towards pure profit because they went deep in the red following Sakaguchi's movie gamble. The FF7 milking is nothing new, either. The reason for FF7's success was its worldwide marketing. It was the first Final Fantasy to receive worldwide blockbuster leveling marketing. It was also the first mainline Final Fantasy released in Europe. It's the easy play for money, because it took hold of 3~4 continent's worth of childhoods/adolescence. And it got to have that launch pad, because of the success of the first 6 FFs and Square's other IPs. I definitely agree that FF hit a low point throughout the early 2000s and 2010s. They haven't completely course corrected, but their corporate side is definitely riding Naoki Yoshida's creative decisions, far more than Nomura's. Nomura is given an easy task that will make money off fan boys no matter what(VII rehash). Yoshida is given the new project of FFXVI, along with continuing to helm XIV (which is something he's starting to grow tired of, even though its success still burgeons).
@@Zephhi I play for the story and game play. I fully admit that FFX has a better battle system than the ATB era or the earlier turn based at the start of the series. I played the early hallways of 13 and I didn't k ow why I was winning battles and had no idea what was going on in the story. If I want to play Devil May Cry 1-4 I'll play that or another action RPG. What I won't do is play a morph of a genre between ARPG and RPG. Either I want to be able to dodge an attack or take a turn. Therefore, I have not purchased 15 or the 7 remake. Nomura is creatively bankrupt, he just has a style a style that is best suited for character concept art and only that. Maybe someday the art director. Sakaguchi or Matsuno are directors i.e. polymaths that can call the shots. Nomura has a limited skillet and that's not a bad thing. Just not the right fit as the head director or management.
XII is definitely worth playing. The story and characters won’t blow you away, but it’s got a great art style and fun battle system. If you have a One X or Series X, you can play it at 4K/60fps.
I kind of agree. But I dont think old core developers like Nomura, Kitase, Nojima, are to blame. I blame it on the video game market. Infact, the irony of this all, is that we complain and accuse Square of chasing money. But Square still fails to make Final Fantasy become #1 on the market for the sake of being #1, and yet, their games are considered milkers? One thing that doesn't make sense with any of this in the video, is that we contrastingly have you claiming FFX-2 is some kind of cash grab, now granted, some of it looks superficial, but the story also concludes a lot of things we didn't know thru x that fans wanted to know. But FFX-2 also leaves newer questions, and this is why old time FFX fans want a FFX-3 because they want an even more grandeur conclusive story on Tidus and Yuna. A lot of these arguments fall flat and you don't seem to be doing your homework. FFXI was heavily influenced by Sakaguchi and as well as other younger devs, as Sakaguchi at the time was engrossed in EverQuest. This is when MMOs were starting to rise. FFXI has some of the most unique story telling in Final Fantasy and although its Story Telling was less intense and immersive as FFX's was, FFXI offered its own unique style of story telling, that was very much untapped in MMOs. To complain about grinding MMOs is contradictory because Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest were cemented around the concept of grinding levels. FFXI's grinding isn't even that bad compared to something like FFV, or FFVII, or FFII. Sakaguchi when he left Square and was fired, He left with a warning to Nomura, that they cannot stick to the formula too much, too long, and too strictly, or the franchise will not grow and it will die. Sakaguchi bluntly promoted Nomura, regardless if people want to admit it or not, Sakaguchi had Nomura as his golden child in the early 2000s. The reality is, your idea of what makes a Final Fantasy game, is a stark contrast in philosophies with its own actual creators. You act as if the same people who created FFV's gameplay, or the PS1 Era of FF games or FFX's story, are also stupid at the same time. What fans appreciated of FF since its roots, is the story telling, the cinematic experience. 7 made final fantasy cinematic, 4 made final fantasy into a story telling experience. and then when Kingdom Hearts came around, slowly more and more they welcomed the idea of action, Sakaguchi is actually a fan of action games and a lot of the devs like action. Sakaguchi the turn based battle system was allurement to Sakaguchi wanting Final Fantasy to be more action oriented, and that's why he was going to call it Fighting Fantasy, but the name we know was taken, and then this alone is further discussed about Sakaguchi being disappointed with his limited options using the original NES' power. this is the problem with the mentality of "Stay in your lane". this is actually against what Sakaguchi has preached as well as the other devs at Square. I understand of the old adage of if it aint broke, don't fix it. However in this case, I would like to argue that what you may call not broken, the artist in them who made the piece of art wants to make something even more. You cannot make assumptions that an artist is off the rails, when the artists is merely making what they are very very passionate about. This is what is great about passionate art is that it is always subjective, no matter how awful it may seem to you. the developers of final fantasy treat their games like art usually, theyre very passionate about what they do, even if it wont give me them the maximum number of sales. the devs of final fantasy consider themselves artists, and you simply are not actually respecting that. If you want final fantasy to be 30 final fantasies in and be the exact same as FF7-10, then you go make 30 games like those nearly identically minus ever so slightly differences, that's your mission. i understand liking games for what they are in the past nostalgically, I still think Ocarina of Time is the greatest Zelda ever, but thats an opinion and but one philosophy, and if they continue in the same route as BotW, thats ok, it isnt self-destructive and detrimental. and thats the beauty of art, it dies, it survives, and it thrives, and it lives on in different ways reborn differently for the future of the new era and generations to come.
I’m a fan of both Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy, but Final Fantasy wasn’t truly original. FF was based on Phantasy Star. It says on google that FF and PS were made in the same year, but on the back box art of the original two shows that Phantasy Star I was made in 1998, and Final Fantasy I 1990.
FF 13 signaled its downfall, 13 is even considered an unlucky number. FF 15 clinched it that it was all ruined and all the fans gave up on it. Another disappointment was Kingdom Hearts III which ruined my childhood. HOWEVER, FFVII remake was great and worth the wait. FF 16 was also different but unique, it brought FF to a whole new level. I believe FFVII would be the one to restore the company to its former glory. Because 7 is also considered a lucky number. FFVII lucky, FFXIII unlucky, coincidence? I THINK NOT
I was with you until you started to talk about FFXIV. I don't play MMO's or like them, but FF14 is Final Fantasy first and MMO second and FF14 have heart of classic Final Fantasy. If you want that old magic of FF play 14 or atleast play through it so you know what you are talking about.

Micro Transactions and grinding?! The micro transactions are almost entirely cosmetic and there are already so many good cosmetic options ingame, you really don't need to buy anything in the Mogstation. As a comparison: The micro DLCs in Monster Hunter games are far more intrusive and those games are really beloved nowadays. And grinding? GRINDING?! What are you on? The MSQ literally gives you enough experience to level multiple jobs simultaneously. You only need to grind if you decide to level many jobs at once. If you just want to push through the MSQ, there is no grinding required. People actually praise FF14 for being one of the few not-grindy-MMOs. Again: What were you on when you wrote than comment?

Well, ff16 kind of looks like it's returning to a more traditional RPG setting and plot style at least. I find their excuse for not going back to a more turn based combat to be quite amusing though. The producer said that due to the more realistic graphics, seeing turn based combat would be weird. This is stupid because the game series is called Final FANTASY. It's not supposed to be realistic, otherwise it wouldn't be really A FANTASY. It's in the name FFS!
They’ve been weird about turn based combat ever since the merger, if they’re not trying to speed it up and make it flashy like they did with XIII they’re forgoing it entirely in favour of shallow real time battle systems that completely lack the tactical element
@@PtolemySL Indeed, shame they'll likely not return to the active time battle system for their mainline FF games. BTW what are your thoughts on Crisis Core? That was one of my most hated games of all time. Then came FFXII, which didn't feel like a FF game to me but rather more of a mix between FF Tactics and Star Wars. I pretty much declared the series dead and never played XIII or beyond.
Kingdom Hearts storytelling might as well be the cognitive product of an autistic 12-year old's mind. The only interesting aspect about that kind of world building and storytelling is the ridiculous amount of stupid crap that gets arbitrarily combined into a huge pile of random convoluted turds. Same goes for XIII, XV and now VII Remake project. And while XVI tries to tell you a coherent narrative, I don't find it particularly appealing. Boring like XIV.

I'll be honest, I've never played an FF game in my life (aside from trying FF3 for about 30 minutes), but when has Square Enix ever done anything correctly? Just look at the Deus Ex kerfuffle, or the complete mishandling of NieR: Automata's launch, and then they mishandled it *again* when they basically shat on the Steam userbase by not updating and fixing the game, but doing so on the fucking garbage Microsoft Store.

To be fair, FFX-2 had the best combat in the entire series. And I'm not talking about the dresspheres. There are way better ways to implement a job class system. But that's the only good thing that can be said about that game.

Well. Bumblebee didn't stay dead, but I prefer the animated show to use as source material anyways.
I hate it.
well well well, my favourite youtuber
ik Sony had plans on doing a live action FromSoft movie/series but i wasn't expecting John Boyega to be tied to it
Just look at how SE is milking tf out of FF characters with gacha games.
"...the shareholders demanded it"
I was with you till you started to slander 11. Sakaguchi came up with the idea of 11.
I personally am not interested in MMO Final Fantasy how is that slander, if they just called it FF: Online I would have zero issue but it’s a literal mainline FF non-MMO fans got shafted by this decision
@@PtolemySL It say it has no story is laughable as it has some of the best story and lore within the whole series save for the Ivalice set games. (ff12, fft, vagrant story)
Great videos Ptolemy! Time and again, I come back to watch all of your stuff. Especially your FF videos/metaphysical analysis.
Thank you bro, I appreciate it. 👍
Have a Merry Christmas.
"look what weve learned from disneý..."
Holy crap man I just tried FF7 Reunion. I've never known dialog so bad, so cringe. Everything also has this homoerotic undertone to it. Nomura is a stain on the franchise.
Thankfully FF16 is turning out to be everything I want. There's hope.
I dont think ff16 will be a good game.
Its getting more hated than ff15 tho.
Squeenix is a lost cause. There's no hope for them.
FF15 was honestly the worst game I ever played. It literally ruined games for me. I didn't play video games for a whole year because they just seemed like an unenjoyable waste of time.
I also found it insanely disappointing lol
@PtolemySL BTW I just discovered you from a post by Think Before You Sleep. Subbed. I'll be binging your past videos for sure.
Apart from 7 and 10 what would be the best FF to play between 1-9?
FF9 is a favourite of mine, check out Moguri Mod for the PC version it adds widescreen support, enhanced audio and lovingly remasters the entire game

when FFX2 came out, I stop buying FF serie, because I've felt betrayed.
everyone of my gamer friends who've played FF7 remake, they all siad it is a big pile of shit.
FF serie suppose to be "What's The Next?". the new world, the new settings, the push of new.
Funny thing is: FFX-2 was vastly superior to everything that came after it. Things only got worse from there!!
10 was garbage. That's where it started going downhill, fast.
Me: *Cough, cough*, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. *Cough, cough*.
At this point, the only things Square-Enix is good at now are Dragon Quest, FFXIV, creating original IPs, and remaking old SquareSoft games.
I might give ff12 another try. But why even bother with 13 and on?
13 and 15 are so mid it's insane
@@jakec947 should I play the original ps2 version, buy on steam or switch?
@@marine76a Switch or PC version. The Zodiac Age remaster makes the PS2 version worthless.
Have you played through the Dragon Quest games?
FF 13 signaled its downfall, 13 is even considered an unlucky number. FF 15 clinched it that it was all ruined and all the fans gave up on it. Another disappointment was Kingdom Hearts III which ruined my childhood. HOWEVER, FFVII remake was great and worth the wait. FF 16 was also different but unique, it brought FF to a whole new level. I believe FFVII would be the one to restore the company to its former glory. Because 7 is also considered a lucky number. FFVII lucky, FFXIII unlucky, coincidence? I THINK NOT
Fucking sick intro bro
I still don't understand why they basically intentionally buried Chrono Trigger. It will always be superior to FF.
I was with you until you started to talk about FFXIV. I don't play MMO's or like them, but FF14 is Final Fantasy first and MMO second and FF14 have heart of classic Final Fantasy. If you want that old magic of FF play 14 or atleast play through it so you know what you are talking about.
You’re saying DQ fans are happy, lmao. From all the news so far 12 is gonna divide everyone like ff, apparently it’s adding action game elements, it’s going to be “more adult”, the music composer and artist are dead, you know 3 people made DQ and 2 of them are dead, series producer for 22 years left because he didn’t like how development was going. hey at least theres second cousin games , like bravely default and granblue series etc. ff16 looks bland as hell though
Its a shame that the best FF story since X was locked behind a MMO. 14 has a incredible story locked behind micro transactions and grinding.

Seeing the commercials for FFX-2 made me embarrassed to be a FF fan. Literally a kid even made fun of me in middle school because he knew I liked FF and that was his only exposure to it. That was one of my most hated games of all time. Then came FFXII, which didn't feel like a FF game to me but rather more of a mix between FF Tactics and Star Wars. I pretty much declared the series dead and never played XIII or beyond.
The Enix side is also bad. Dragon Quest localization gets worse each game.
Yeah, and Star Ocean has also been on a major decline since SO4.
FF10 sucked. FF9 was the last good FF

Ff9 was indeed the last good ff. Ive said this to everybody last 20yrs.😄

Do yourself a favor play FF14 it's the only game that still has the soul of final fantasy
