For those who can't eat lard or are vegetarians the best substitute is butter or margarine. Butter is still better as it has the same effect as lard if you don't know.

I think cooking oil can be a substitute of pork lard . I make tausahpiah today and I don't have enough pork lard so I added the cooking oil .The result turns out perfectly delicious. But I'm not sure is it ok to make tausahpiah with only cooking oil in this recipe...cuz I think pork lard add up more aroma and tastier.

You better pass if you, like me are concerned with your health. Lard or shortening, oil is oil - they are the same. Depending what kind of shortening, sometimes it is worse than lard.
