  • A 58-year-old patient with terminal heart disease became the second patient in the world to receive a successful transplant of a genetically-modified pig heart on September 20, 2023 at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Patient Lawrence Faucette, had end-stage heart disease.
The xenotransplant was performed by Dr. Bartley Griffith, who also performed the world's first pig heart transplant in 2022. “We are once again offering a dying patient a shot at a longer life, and we are incredibly grateful to Mr. Faucette for his bravery and willingness to help advance our knowledge of this field,” said Dr. Griffith.
The Procedure was co-led by Dr. Muhammad M. Mohiuddin. Considered one of the world’s foremost experts on xenotransplantation, Dr. Mohiuddin established the Cardiac Xenotransplantation Program at the University of Maryland.

They have performed several kidney grafts (kidney was outside the body but subjects blood was perfusing the organ) on various brain dead persons who were organ donors (and with the permission of their family) and the grafts were not only successful, but they produced urine.
Recently they did a full transplant (organ was inside the body) on a subject (brain dead) and the organ functioned just like any other transplant (perfused and produced filtrate). The experiments are always terminated after X amount of hours or days.
