Outside of never breathing, you did the best job explaining this, thank you so much.
Lol if you put it on 0.75x speed it's a little easier to follow along
For those interested, the "meat stealing" was real. It was huge case back in the '70 in Poland. People responsible were hung, including the father of a very famous Polish actor.
I got a different understanding about Richard's timeline. Richard's mother hid Jews like Rose and after her new husband (Richard's stepfather) abused both Richard and her, she lied saying he collaborated with the Nazis and the Polish partisans killed him by hanging him.
Ok, how did Rose wind up dead then? My theory is that some of their neighbours were hiding the jews and let them out during the night to take a breath of fresh air (this we learn from a note). This is when young Richard was having his meetings with Rose. Possibly, the step father wrote the note to the nazis, so they killed Rose (and most probably those, who gave sheler to them). Richard's mother then told the partisans that her man was collaborating with the nazis, so they hanged him. We see a wooden plate with the word "collaborator" on it.
A more sinister theory would be that it was the mother, who first wrote to the nazis, then blamed it on Richard's stepfather to make the partisans hang him.
@@dAvrilthebear Your theories are good too.
@@dAvrilthebear it's kind of implied that richard was sneaking her food but as the memories advance he brings less like one time he says "this was all I could bring" and it looked spoiled so idk
@@a.goodwin4852 There might've been some food shortage... But you may also understand the rotten food as a manifestation of his guilt that he could not save her (he wasn't to blame, of course)
@@dAvrilthebear yep, that satisfies me. I feel like i should have picked up that much easier though. I thought that option through in my head at the time and the other one mentioned above by "Overonater". Maybe it was the order in which these events appear in the story or I just needed more clarification? At one point I was thinking " well, how could the step-father be both a collaborator and sheltering Jews". I thought he was probably too evil to have helped anyone so I had to come to the conclusion he must have done been just a collaborator (grassing up the family). Either way I enjoyed the story even if I was slightly confused by it at times.
I hope we get a sequel with Thomas as the main character.
we will
I actually think it'll be a trilogy. There's a lot of the mechanics to the other side, and they seem to have most of it thought out.
@@TheKarjee makes sense with the repeating words of sadness, joy and curiosity
The sequel would be Large and extra large
I want to know wtf is the deal with the giants walking around the spirit realm
Happy to see you making content that makes you happy
Thanks for piecing the story together. Everything is so scattered and shrouded in mystery that it made me second guess my understanding of the story. This video helped a lot! Great job!
Just finished the game last night, your description/summary was excellent.
thanks so much :) super amazing vid!
also, the polish nightmare artist,, that’s so cool! I’ve always loved his work.
Having just finished the game, I think that the one who actually called Marrianne at the beginning was the Maw. As we see it mimic jack later in the game. If you pay attention to how it speaks and what it says I think it makes a lot of sense.
I like it when a games makes you think 🤔💬 and put the pieces together, but ya I agree with you completely.
@@Cold_Zero_The_Wise sorry i mess up
This is the most complete video I've watched. Thanks for your time making it happen.
Did Thomas knew Jack personally? It doesnt make sense he would let a man he barely know singlehandedly raise his other daughter, knowing what happened to Lily.
reeeeeeally good video explaining some of the missable bits. I can appreciate it even more now , thanks!
That was an excellent video. You did a great job and I loved watching it.
This was an absolute soild explaination. Thank you so much for your hard work!
Thankyou SO much for this I was extremely confused pretty much the whole time playing the game... I feel like it could have been more clear with a lot of things because the story is amazing just hard to piece together!!!!!!! Youre awsome for making this!
Really good video you got a new sub.
Nice video!
thanks for tying that all together!
Just finished my playthrough of this for my channel and came here to collect my thoughts. Great video and a great game. I hope there's either more to come, or that more people find this gem of a story
Thank you for making this video✨👍 I believe now that i do understand the story better than I did before
Great job, thanks !!!!
anything your voice touches is automatically 10x as interesting
Thanks my man glad you enjoyed!
Hey very good job with this video. I really liked it
You talked so fast so that I don't know if you mentioned that Thomas wife died during Marianne's birth and that's why Lilly hated her little sister.
He actually did in the beginning
He talked so fast I had a hard time actually piecing it together
I guess if you played the game then watched it it would be fine but as someone just watching the vid it didn't work
Guys slow the video down to 0.75x, you will understand better, gingy talks to fast LOL 😂😂🤣😭
Very good video, I had to slow it down though as I couldn't keep up with you. I know you tried to condense the information and say it quickly but if you work on your pace it'll be perfect. Thank you for the video. I needed this! 😁
Thank you for this
thank you for the video!

Great recap.
Late to the party (finished the game two days ago), but two things are missing: one is shoe at the beginning of Niwa, then another one holded by the dog (I believe it was the same pair of shoes), THEN after credits we see Thomas ("real" or ghost?) with the same shoes. Neat detail.
The second one - the watch. It was hold dear by Thomas as anniversary gift; he had it all the time. It had been dropped by real Thomas (the ghost Thomas doesn't sense his presence); his spirit form found the watch, so: a) the real Thomas found the way to cross the worlds (if Marianne could do it, then maybe he could too - he tried many things to solve the entire problem so who knows) or b) someone else dropped his watch (someone who can trespass spirit world?). It's obvious - at least for Marianne - that items from real and spirit world couldn't pass to another; but maybe for Thomas it was possible?
And the third little detail - the food in the bunker is not that old. The only person which was still alive after masacre was the F. Time of his death is not certain - the voice Marianne hears could be some old memory or the spirit "is still fresh". Considering the Maw consuming some animals, which we see in the same scene, and the same happened to Francis, it could be him eating in bunker (but what about the water in the bunker, the code, the mirror in the Red House?). But there's a mirror in the bunker, shattered (on purpose). Maybe Thomas was visiting the old place one more time and then escaped to the spirit world? From all the people left in Niwa, only him or Francis could be still alive by the time Marianne showed up.
And for those who doesn't like the ending - it's too enigmatic, yes, but it's the charm of leaving some mystery rather than showing everything straight to the point. As Silent Hill games were heavily influenced with many symbolism and theories; like The Shining had many theories (and all being Wendy's imagination is my most favourite - I highly recommend it!), we get there the "full" answer (in SH - many of them, not counting UFO or dog ending in SH2 ;)), but we're leaved with MANY questions which will be never answered (and that's the best part - to made theories and to wonder). It's like reading a book - it's YOUR imagination what happened next. Sometimes it's better to leave it that way. ...or to wait for sequel :).
You nailed it
A bit more history is that in Poland that was the only occupied territory where helping Jews was punishable by death and the country that helped the most Jewish people by making Żegota which was made for the sole purpose of saving Jewish people since the allies never committed a lot of resources to the help of Jewish people despite reports.
I just finished the game today on my phone from the game pass app and your video was very VERY much appreciated
Thanks, what a great explanation, really difficult to follow and understand game, but it was quite nice.
Thanks for piecing it together.
Thomas is still alive, when you first find the Maw he´s saying: "dont look, dont look, he´s looking!" refering material world Thomas
Do you still play for honor i’m already big sad I miss the for honor content😞
either way at least you’re pulling in a lot more views and expanding your channel it’s all good as long as you’re enjoying yourself keep up the good work
i can imagine the effort... great job
Bro that story telling was awesome
I must have missed some items that cause flashbacks/visions I didn’t see the one of Thomas shooting lily at the pier . Didnt realise the demon was called Maw 😂 kept calling skinsuit smeagol.
You can turn names on and off on subtitles. I had to because i couldn't figure out who was talking
It’s The first scene in the game basically
Thanks for your hard work on this. The game in my opinion would have been greatly improved with a clearer backbone to the story, they don't need to spell everything out but it was a struggle just keeping track of who the main characters were. Also since many of the characters have an associated spirit monster, it would have been better if they had clearly conveyed who each monster was an aspect of and drawn a clearer separation between the monsters. I spent quite a while working on the theory that the monsters were all aspects of one person, not helped by the fact that sadness sounds like she is just one part of a many faceted personality.
Marianne actually went into the Spirit World with the gun and shot the Maw.
Look at her eye color at the end.
Marianne is strong but not strong enough to bring a material thing into the spirit realm. What is with her eyes? I don't see a difference.
@@06chrissy07 the spirit world eye is now darker
What if maryanne created fear in Lilliane and used the huge amount of energy to kill maw. We just heard it as a gun
@@piratetv1 if it walks like a duck...
The monster can be harmed by electricity, and it is possible it can be killed by the gun too.

I just Platinum this game on PlayStation I thought this game was great I can't believe all the hate I've been seeing around it like it's solid in my opinion anyway and this is the best video I found of an explanation on RUclips like awesome job man!! Sorry for responding 7 months late don't have an Xbox 😂
I missed 1 fkn echo now i gotta replay the whole ass game
There are SO MANY unanswered questions and this “explained” none of them. I’m still left with so many questions
Great great video man!! loved this! I just finished the game the other day and was thinking through a lot of stuff, this video cleared up some of my thoughts, Thank you man. I just wish more stuff regarding the spirit realm was explained in the game, like why does Marianne have the energy absorption on her left hand, why not the right hand? or why not both hands like Thomas does, what are these spirit wells? Why is sadness missing her right arm? Is there a reason as to Why the monsters look like that? Spirit Thomas has his own mind, why doesn't Marianne have a spirit version of herself with her own mind? Marianne is the only medium who occupies two bodies one mind. Do thomas and Marianne also have monster versions of themselves like how Lily has for the Maw? Man so many questions
About Marianne being able to have one mind in two bodies, I think there’s a note from Thomas explaining that he has a theory that she’s able to do that due her mother’s death in childbirth
Regarding Sadness’ arm, I have a theory on that that could be way off but: Thomas as the father uses spirit energy on both arms. Maybe this ability translated down to one arm each for Marianna and Lily. So if you split Thomas in half, one got his left arm and one his right. Marianne uses her left arm, and maybe the reason Sadness is missing her right is that the monster severed it from her, to prevent her from using spirit energy against him? Hope that makes sense? Like I said, I might be way off, was just something I thought of while playing.
@@Sweenaldo85 i think her right arm is missing because Thomas was dosing her blood with salt. The bag was at the right side of the chair as well.
Marianne and thomas dont have a monster like Lily, it was explained in the story and the video that the monster was created from her abusement she got from richard, marianne and thomas dont monsters
@@shamimkhamidi462 Yep. Thomas says in the note that death makes the veil between two worlds thinner thus Marianne was 'born' into two worlds as the same person while Lily and Thoamas were born with their dark twins.
I never really thought of The Medium as a horror game, let alone psychological horror. It felt like a sort of homage/weird spin on Silent Hill since we haven't had a new Silent Hill game in YEARS. If they were going for scary, personally they kinda dropped the ball, but in terms of a narrative adventure, it was pretty damn good. Layers of Fear is a complete 180 of this as the story is bland but the psychological horror is amazing. From a story perspective, I would love a DLC or sequel following Thomas but as a fan/non-fan of getting the ever loving shit scared out of me, I could take it or leave it.
lol "as a fan/non-fan of getting the ever loving shit scared out of me, I could take it or leave it". Same.
I think you talked a bit too fast. Need a bit more time to process information
I think so too.
I slowed the video down to 0.74x and that helped a lot !
I watched the video at 2x speed and it was still understandable idk what u talkin about
@@djgolden5903 I think what this person is saying that is was too fast for THEM. That's what they are talking about. Everyone works different.
Thanks you very much for the video.
I finished the game but at the very end i felt like didn't understand half of the plot.
Thanks for that recap. I was very confused about the order of events; and the recap helped.
Question - who is Sadness though? Earlier we are told she's Lilly's ghost. But at the end, we see Lilly is alive! Also, how will killing Lilly kill the Maw? Killing Richard or Henry didn't kill Childeater or Hound.
I think sadness is Lily’s spirit in otherworld but she got separated from Lily after Richard hurt her and Maw was awaken again
Alright, buckle up! so Lily's spirit is divided into two parts because of the trauma she experienced from Richard, the two parts are
1. Sadness (a vulnerable innocent part of lily)
2. Maw (the tormented part of lily)
Lily is also a medium hence her spirits both are alive but with their own minds like how Thomas and spirit thomas have different minds but are technically the same. Thomas and Marianne do not have their spirit divided in two parts because they never experienced trauma as much as Lily did.
Killing Richard and Henry did not kill childeater and hound as they only exist in the spirit world and not the real world so only their human versions died, but in the case of Lily, she made a deal with the Maw to bring him to the real world and that's why he exists in the real world and can affect it too but he's just invisible. since both lily and maw are in the real world and connected killing lily would also kill maw in the real world.
If the maw existed only in the spirit world, then killing lily would not kill him, (this is just my theory, i donno if its accurate)
but again, lily is a powerful medium, she's special, so the Maw is more connected and sensitive to lily than other people monsters. They also made a deal: the maw would protect lily at all costs only if she lets him into the real world, but if Marianne kills her, deals off.
@@salmankhan2739 nice. Thank you for the explanation. Makes sense now.
@@salmankhan2739 Lily explains that the reason marriane cant kill the maw like she can the hound is because she is still alive, so her spirit would presumably just reconjure it, hence why when it died a various points in the game it always came back, thats why lily wanted anne to kill her, so she could vanquish the spirit and without lily to bring it back it dies forever. Killing lily wouldn't kill the maw but it would make it possible to be killed, this is consistent with both the child eater and the hound, as both their hosts were killed (and in richards case part of his spirit as well) but their spirit forms remained, trapped forever in the spirit realm, but anne was able to kill both of their spirit forms and they never later reappear, this also makes sense as to why spirit Thomas was still alive up to that point in the game because until the post credit scene we were under the assumption material world Thomas was dead.
At the beginning, when you first get to the resort there’s a man walking slowly when you look through to wooden boards. Who is this?
Possibly Francis's ghost?
Watched the entire video 0.75x because i am not an English native speaker and I couldn't follow up so fast 😂 great video btw
Thank you, I needed this to understand. Too many characters thrown in during the game with little and confusing context to back them up, it was very tough to follow while playing.
The story is fine, but having the entire ending as a cutscene was sooo anticlimatic. I hope they step it up if a sequel comes.
The only thing I dont quite get is the Niwa Resort part. Was it just next to Thomas's house by coincidence? Why did the maw influence Ursula etc, weren't they just normal people? Why would the maw be interested in the people inside the resort and why was it in the resort in the first place?
Excellent video by the way, it explained many things to me but I had to watch it at 0.85 speed haha
How Thomas gets to Niwa is explained when you are exploring Richard's story in the Dayroom section, in the letters you find. Richard arranged that Thomas would be contracted for the Niwa project, Thomas was an architect by then. Thomas stayed on at Niwa, wanting to lead a normal life and sealing his powers, until he needed spirit Thomas again to take revenge for Lily. The Maw came from Lilianne's mind, it was her 'demon' (created by trauma), but she set it free (to save her and Marianne from the fire) and it could therefore affect the real world. It can posses other people (and animals), but normal people can't contain it and will be sucked dry. The Maw cannot escape the resort, because Thomas trapped it there (the books you find in Thomas' secret room). The Maw hopes he'll be strong enough to break through Thomas' barriers once he possesses Marianne.
Hey i would have loved to watch the whole video after my playthrough after minute 4 i just had to stop cuz it was just too fast to follow. Of course i understand that there is so much to talk about plotwise so you probably wanted to keep the video as short as possible but i think that wasnt the right choice, even if the video would have been 50min long i would have watched the whole thing. There are probably still a lot of people who could catch up but especially for someone like me whose 1st language isnt english its very hard. I still love your content and the effort you put into it 👍
The part that still confuses me is Richard is supposedly a child during the nazi time, yet Thomas is told by Henry that he was controlled by nazis for the first 3 years of his life. Richard is like what 20 years older than Thomas? Was it possibly Richard was a child during WW1? Or the in between?
I need to review the documents, flashback and conversations but he's my take on what could have happened: either some Nazis remained hidden and continued their experiments or their scientist were recruited by the Soviets after the war.
also, to add to Jorge's post...THE PERIOD IS FRIKIN' WW11 THAT'S "2", NOT "NAZI TIME"!! OR WW1 EITHER..(though that could have been a simple typo so should let that slide). Sorry, but come on?
It's super important world history! I know your talking about a fictional bit of prose but still....ok not mad now : )
@@rudidower First of all: It's WW2 not WW eleven. No, you didn't use roman numerals as that would've been II not two distinct keyboard 1s. Also, nobody abbreviates WW2 like that... So if you want to be a "grammarnazi" about it. Atleast be correct? (For the pun only)
Second: Nazi is build on political and "scientifical" idea that been building for a long time. There was a lot of eugenic papers written in the USA that Nazis used to solidify their "science". At the time many countries believed in the "science" at the time.
So why don't you go actually read a world history book before trying to make a comment about something you clearly know nothing about... Also the whole point of my comment was to emphasize the Nazi involvement in the story, which means it wasn't WW2 that was the focus, it was specifically Nazis and since it wasn't Germany, it be the Nazis that took over Poland. Which as Jorge said in his comment is beyond WW2. Per the comment...
Now you've come across properly I'm glad to see. I wasn't all about grammar, you just came across, to me at least as someone who had little care on the subject and it annoys me when people don't get major wars correct. I'm sure you can relate? It was my reaction to what I thought was lack of interest/education in a subject i am passionate about. I see your point now, and well made it was. You sound like a different person in this second comment. My mistake simple as. I do think it also could have triggered someone like you in the same way when you think about it. Regards
Shit, also, I've just noticed that it says "WW eleven" it was meant to say "WW11" not sure why it changed, was changed.
The game is about greed and how wanting "maw and maw" is never good 😑. Was funnier before I typed it.
I found it funny just now : ) You created a laugh in the future, good job.
How come that the Secret Police did not send another agent to investigate?
My only theory is his death happened somewhere in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Block, around 1988, and they had other things on their minds...
UPD: After considering the timeline, it must've happened between 1979 and 1983, not later. So, the mystery remains.
The one thing i dont understand....what richard done to sadness...why she scared of him....i dont know if i missed any part of the game
He might have hit or sexually abused Lilly
Richard molested Lilianne. That's why Thomas is very angry to Richard.
They don't directly talk about it (because of censorship?) but we can assume it's about the molestation.
Think about the ribbon scene of Richard and Lilianne. We can innocently assume that Lilianne put the ribbon into herself. But the thing is, Richard was tempted to molest Lilianne when the girl tried to put the ribbon to herself.
That's why Richard said after he had molest her, "WHAT I HAVE DONE!!!"
On which Marianne innocently said, "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE???".
The first time I hear that, I feel so horrible to even fully understand it. It's creepy as hell. 😭
@@connordrake5713 It's mind-blowing that when the maw appeared in the begining he keeps saying "He's looking", "Don't leave me naked" and "Don't look at me". I noticed it when i was watching a gameplay of a streamer after i finished the game, i was shocked.
@@oOmhstrOo Exactly, this game has a lot of sexual innuendo. I don't care about it first. But when I know how the maw was formed because of Richard, I'd understand why the maw always said "Don't leave me alone and naked", "He's looking at me", "Don't look at me."
@@connordrake5713 when he gave her the ribbon, Marianne sensed a feeling in Richard that she didn't want to think about. He later did something that they let us assume.
i want to an explanation about henry's monster , is henry fully a monster , he is in control with his monster and how did he have that monster .. also i want to know richard's monster origin what caused it to be created exactly
I think Richards monster was created because of his sadness due to the death of his dad, the guilt of not being able to defend his mom from the step-dad, plus the rage (and sadnes and guilt as well of course lol) at losing his first love Rose at the hands of his father. He basically was full of sadness, guilt and rage, oh yeah, also he abused Lilly, Thomas's daughter so he was no doubt guilty about that too though by that point his monster probably had some control over him. As far as Henry monster is concerned I'm not so clear on it. I think, maybe, that he shopped his own dad to the police because he stole some nice expensive meat and replaced it with crappy cheap meat (like from LiDL or something) and he was hung for it. So Henry caused the death of his own father. I must admit that I did think that the last name of Thomas was the same as the dads (Wilks?) but I now think I probably got that wrong. I hope that helps mate : )
Wow! I thougth I understood the game, but this video confused me. I had to watch it a couple of times till I got the full picture. Although I like a lot of your explanations, there're still a few flaws. I.e. Henry isn't a nazi. He is a KGB Agent. Since his superiors show him files from the red army (that's the russian army) and in his case is an id batch with the KGB symbol on it (under the gemini file).
I was so intrigued in the story at the beginning but it did not stick to landing.
I don't like how personal the story gets.
I would give it like a 7 and a 10.
Close to great but just fell short a bit.
Sorry to question you.1 Thing don't understand.
Killers are Gestapo who was messaged by Richard's mother. It can explain Jewish girl Rose‘s death.
But what Richard's step father said before die seems like the Poland government(After 1945) killed him as a collaborator of Nazi.
To me it goes like this....Richard's step-father collaborated with the Nazis by telling them about the Jewish family (who the Nazis then kill, along with whoever was hiding the Jewish family), then Richards mother told other fellow Poles about it and they came and killed the Step-dad. Of course she didn't like the step-dad as he had abused both her and her son. Do you see?
Thanks for making this video. I really disliked the game, so didn't really care about the characters and must've not been paying much attention. I kept thinking, "who's Henry? Wait, who's Richard?" I felt this game told the story very poorly, it was confusing. I know the Maw was saying creepy things since it's the villain, but half the time I was saying outloud, "What the fuck are you talking about??" He kept talking about wearing people as a skin suit, no more hungry or shame, let them see. Really took me out of it.
Lol I finished the game yesterday night and only understood 60% of the story
the maw, is it demon? because lily said "i didnt invite it, but it came anyway"
My guess is that her spirit split. One into an innocent child and the other her tormented self since she was molested by Richard.
It's a corrupted part of her, of her soul (Sadness is her innocence).
Just like Richard's monster and The Hound within Henry.
What about Jack's tie at the ruins and he talks to us?
The maw
The Maw just being the Maw, though it is just totally unexplained how the Maw got hold of Jack's tie in the physical world and left it for Marianne to find.
Im still confused who is the last monster?
What last monster? The Maw???
The hound? It's Henry's demon. Sadness and the Maw belong to Lilly.

so many names and timelines. I'm beyond confused
This is good but could you maybe pause and talk a bit slower?
I still dont get how Rose died can someone explain
Rose was a Jewish girl, who was in hiding at a house close to the home of Richard's parents, when Richard was still young. This is during WW2. Richard's father fought in the war, but died. Richard's new step-dad was a nasty man and betrayed Rose's family to the Nazis, who took her away. The stepfather got lynched for being a collaborator.

what if, thomas actually planned sacrificing marianne in order to free Lily from maw?

What?
You talked so fast, though 😓
Dude, SLOW DOWN. You are speaking way too fast - it’s clear that you’re just reading aloud from a script you’ve written, and it makes it really hard to follow your explanation.
Your future explanation videos will probably perform a lot better if you give your audience time to actually listen, take in your explanations and understand your points.
Why define it as a psychological horror game when horror is psychological by it's very nature?
I have a love hate with this game. Scenically it was beautiful, but not as creepy as it could have been. A lot of walking simulator which was annoying. Way too simple of a game as well. The section with Thomas was so fucking boring and repetitive. But in the end I enjoyed it overall.
Suggestions on your future videos.
Take a freaking breath between sentences. Rambling for a million words a second dosen't help me understand what you're saying.
