    Shakespeare is universal. “You have made me into this (caliban also says this) and so I am your creation “. Al Pacino does it angry, and it works.

    What a traditional talent! His is perhaps my favorite take on the character, the one which I had always injected when first reading the play. Ive always had a great deal of sympathy for Shylock - at this moment in particular. This experience of having those who scorned you without good reason returning open handed is one which I imagine many people will go through - including myself. He is right to feel anger in this moment, though would have done better to show compassion. It is only in this way that we might rise above resentful neighbors - by showing compassion in a moment of strength. In the end his insistence on revenge - his pound of flesh - is his downfall.
