I was hoping you'd reach Gears at some point
I only played the first or 2nd Gears of War game and had no idea it had so much world building.
Also, I'm enjoying your narration voice.
I know the popular perception of Gears is a meathead fantasy of violence and mayhem but the story of the first three games is actually very well done and surprisingly emotionally engaging for a game where the protagonists are built like fucking dump trucks pushing 400lbs of pure muscle and testosterone.
They really nail the apocalyptic and desperate tone very well, especially in the second game where even the cover art shows the uber badass protagonist mourning. Hell, this emotional journey is even reflected on the cover art on that note; the first game Marcus looks almost confident in a "lets do this" mood despite the raging inferno behind him, Gears 2 shows the fires subsiding but Marcus looks forlorn, as if the war itself is advancing to an end but he's lost so much, and in Gears 3 he looks extremely angry yet the background is the brightest it's been, showing that the war is ending but he's tired of it all. There's so much of that in these games, it brings so much more than the cover shooter influences it laid upon the industry, it brought emotional storytelling and empathy through the lens of meatheads that stereotypically do not have these feelings or arcs.
Then 4 and 5 fuck it all up
Completely agree. This is a case of more than meets the eye.
Gears 1 was definetly all the stereotypes associated with the series: Muscle men, violence, witty banter, bleak setting, but no depth to any of the characters or world.
Gears 2 shocked fans of the first game by luring you into thinking it was gonna be like the first, with the opening act having a similar tone to the first game. But then once you get into the Hollow, things get much bleaker. Then there's the Tai scene, which came out of nowhere and was brutal. Then there was Dom's disagreements on which is the priority: Maria or the operation. Then there was the Maria scene, which... whew, really fucks you up. It completely subverted expectations by delivering an immensely dark, shocking, and thought provoking story.
Gears 3 took all that and fleshed it out even more, with more realistic characters, and a more engaging plot.
Then 4 and 5 are basically just Marvel movies disguised as "gritty" sci-fi shooters. Don't get me wrong, there's some great moments in this new saga, such as the return to New Hope, and the ending to Gears 4, but it's nothing compared to the original trilogy.
@@BananaBrainsZEF Kait's story is incredible, she wants to help humanity but it is divided between her "Locust" side and her human side, she kills her own uncle, unintentionally, and is used to revive the queen. Gears 5 is about discovering the origin of Myrrah's lineage, why Kait is having those visions, and when she finds out, the game becomes about defeating the Swarms, it's a story of overcoming, of fighting your evil side. I LOVE Gears 1, but when it comes to the story 5 is much better, in the first game Marcus is ordered to turn on the resonator in the Locusts tunnels and the whole game is about the difficulties on this journey, but there is nothing personal about this journey, Marcus doesn't need to overcome anything, at the beginning of the game we got out of prison (The Slab) and Hoffman treats ut badly the first time we see him, but this is the only time that this plot is mentioned, Marcus doesn't need to overcome the time that he stayed in prison or recover his reputation, the plot of Gears 1 is so poor that it doesn't even explain why Marcus was in prison, this is only explained in Gears 3 (in game). Gears 1 is a game about fulfilling ONE mission, but the mission has many setbacks. Neither emotion does this game have, Kim's death doesn't affect us much because we had just met him, while Gears 5 has the death of Oscar, Del and Jack, characters that we had know "for a long time". I would even argue that Lizzie's death is more impactful than Kim's, and i'm not even going to talk about Anthony "WHO?" Carmine.
Gears 1 is great, but it doesn't have a very good story, it has great characters, atmosphere and level design, but it manages to be worse than Gears 5 in many ways, and it comes from someone who loves the first game. People underestimate Gears 5, but the truth is that you can't understand 100 percent of the original trilogy without playing it, it's an incredible and indispensable game.
But i agree, Gears of War 4 sucks.

At first the Locust seem like a Tyranid analogue, then the plot progresses to show that the Locust are humans that underwent experimentation and are waging genocide on the surface as a consequence of the extraordinary suffering they experienced.
Gears would fit right in in 40k

That's the thing about 40k, especially with its vague details about DAOT: Any franchise with vast scientific tech can be argued to be either a glimpse of what was human life during the DAOT or a remnant of said time.

The biggest mistake GOW ever made was making the Locusts mutated humans. It was much more compelling when I thought they were the native species of Sera.

that made an even more profound point on the nature of the wars that happened over imulsion though. Humanitys greed in the long run wound up creating the locust.

@@KillerOrca I wasn't specifically referencing that. After the handover the game lost it's spirit. Just like what happened to Halo. It's like someone described to them the games, but they never actually played them.

I personally like that idea too but as far a canon goes, humans are native to Sera and Earth never existed.
In the beginning you can tell lore wise the writers had no idea what the lore was let alone planet Sera. They were clearly making it up as they went along. The lost earth colony definitely made more sense. But the devs was too busy trying to out smart the fans by making Sera it's own thing while sloppily trying to explain away the plot holes that made.

Sera is not a colony of earth. More like it's an alternate version of earth , the writers already confirmed that. Human origin in sera? No one knows just like earth no one can officially pin point the origin of man. But one thing is confirmed they are not colonist they basically undergone the same era of humanity from stones, to blades, to bullets

I always thought of Sera as a twist on Terra, but with all of the constant war I can see the Ares connection.
Sera would be a great place to visit if it weren’t for the inhuman genocidal monsters that live underground.

Our own planet has its own natural catastrophes such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Sera isn’t that much worse in that regard.
Well think of it this way; the victims of the Holocaust weren't killed, they were turned into something inhuman, and fled to form their own civilization away from the surface world that tortured them. Then they get stirred up by a human Queen who was also tortured and experimented on and decide that ALL of humanity should be annihilated due to Hitler and Goebbel's actions.
Oh, and they invade the day WW2 ends
@@awesomehpt8938 Not entirely, they have those disasters too, they're just more brutal. I believe Marcus mentioned that sometimes some disasters disappear, and it's replaced with a worse one. For example, windflares are supposed to be very recent, also "solar distortions" and other things.

Their first mistake was naming their world after a war god. Even spelled backward.

Before i watched this I, having never played a Gears game, legit thought Sera was a colony of Earth.
I swear there's a piece of lore somewhere that suggests that. Like, one of those "thousands of years ago, when humanity first arrived on Sera" or something.
That's what I said. I asked another commentor where in the lore of Gears does it say that Humans are not from Earth. That would be interesting.
I played the first game when I was like 12 and I had no idea sera was even a thing. I just assumed it all took place on earth and that any weird geography and such would've been because of the locusts underground
Nope. Sera was never colonized by humans from Earth. Think of it like Star Wars. It has humans in it, but it has nothing to do with humans from Earth.
@@Kalebfenoir It was in the Gears of War Official Strategy Guide where there was a small blurb that stated that Sera was colonized by humans.
Probably not canon though, because you'd think at some point leaving the planet would've been an option.
I still want an official map of Sera. Particularly of the pre-locust war Sera. It drove me crazy during the games how they reference locations and you have no real frame of reference.
I've always considered the Humans of Sera some long long lost Colony of humanity, stranded on the planet millennia ago after the seedship that brought them there malfunctioned and couldn't rebuild their society so they had to start over.
I liked the video but I am a little disappointed that the video seem to end during the original trilogy and didn't really talk about the post Locust Sera (which is no longer a wasteland).
Probably cause they're waiting for Gears 6 to come out so they dont end halfway through things. 5 gave us a messy ending.
I remember it took me about 5 seconds when playing Gears 4 when I saw a windlfare and realized "oh wow The Hammer of Dawn really fucked up the atmosphere if those are happening."
Interestingly, it seems windflares are in fact a result of the Imulsion Countermeasure weapon.
This is something I've been waiting for. Gears of War content. The Atlas was great. Here's hoping for Mainline or a Dossier. Or why not a High Command video about the Battle of Azura. Been a while since we had a HighCom vid.
I'd like a High Command about the Battle of Aspho Fields. And mentioning that the commando raid was stealth-oriented, instead of the Gears going full Rambo.
I knew the world of Gears of War was bleak. But not THAT bleak.

1 thing I never understood about the Gears lore, is that if the Locust were created by humans around 50 years before E day. Then how did the Locust, went from a couple hundred to have a large enough population to wage a global war on two fronts, between the humans and the locusts?
They definitely screwed up in that part. The Locust pratically turn into a complete new species and into millions if not billions in numbers... Should had gone for like idk 500 years at least
iirc the labs mission (gears 2-3 & 5) ultra rapid breeding from the queens ... Plus rapid growth, far quicker than normal human (don't recall if it is natural or aided tho)

I believe they are drawn very well and represent what each group is like and what they stand for.

As a long time GOW fan I never even realized that Gears of War takes place in a different planet, I just assumed it was earth and I was shocked when I realized it was a different planet entirely lol.

Not to show off but I am quite the lore expert when it comes to the Gears of War universe. If anyone wants to have some questions answered regarding a certain event, weapon, or anything else from the Gears of War universe then ask away. I'm quite well versed in the lore of the game.

@@superlo3857 Humans on Sera are native to the planet. The same way we are native to Earth. In Gears of War, Earth doesn't exist nor does any of the other things like the solar system or the milky way galaxy.
Gears of War is set in a fictional universe with a fictional solar system, galaxies, planets and so fourth.

I didn't mind that inquiry at first, but Jesus, after seeing 50 people ask the damn question, it started to get on my nerves.
