In the beginning text you asked if Garmadon's backstory is a joke- if you've watched the show, no. It's actually canon that he got bitten by the great devourer and forced into the underworld by his brother Wu on accident (with help of the Golden weapons).
The thing about getting bit by a snake that got bit by a spider was from the movie though, what you said about the show is correct.

Also they did Kai so dirty with the losing powers thing, I was looking forward to seeing him with the scrolls but I feel like that would start the Chen situation again-
"Koko" was actually a nickname that were given by Garmadon, so all the characters name stay the same.
