  • All valuations were correct at the time of broadcast. In the 18th Century, fire marks crafted from lead and copper served the purpose of identifying insured properties. When fires occurred, fire brigades would occasionally compete with each other in a game-like manner, striving to win rewards. Hugh Scully and the experts from Antiques Roadshow take a look at some fantastic antiques and the history and stories surrounding them. This clip was filmed in 2000 in Castle Ashby.

I wonder what happened to this wonderful collection, assuming the gentleman has passed on. This was nearly 25 years ago. Did anyone in the family claim it, or sell it off, or discard it? I sure hope not, and that there was at least one person who recognized its value and historical significance and donated it to a museum. Or, perhaps, this gentleman's will provided for that. Let's hope so!

I remember those. They were on a lot of the old buildings in Bristol.

These things are so cool! I think they should have been worth way more than that… I hope they are now!

It still happens here in the USA. I know of one town at the Ky Tn border that burnt down because they had not paid for the towns fire system
