I think its like that for a lot of things. Like anime, movies, food, games, etc. A cycle of using feelings-logic-feelings to determine things.
You startout doing things for the sake of doing it, for enjoyment, and for the journey. It all feels like an adventure. You achieve or reach a moment of greatness. An amazing feeling. It becomes a core memory to you.
You chase that high again. Optimizing everything, reviews, spreadsheets, guides, testwatching, data. You prioritze speed over experience because the more times you do it, the more chances you can achieve it again.
Then you remember that it wasnt like that the first time you felt it. You dial back you slow down. You try to enjoy it your way again. Now you reach an even higher appreciation for the crafts you admire, especially after learning all about it.

This has always been the intention of the Nuzlocke challenge. There’s a reason “Nickname your Pokémon,” is often considered a rule.
It’s about attachment, and subsequent loss. This has always been what the soul of the Challenge has been. It’s why the progenitor was presented in a (humorous and tongue-in-cheek, but still earnest) comic format.
It’s about the story of struggle. It’s about dealing with the hands dealt.

ngl, the Jan story arc has always been under the surface. Every time Jan ever talked about people's Nuzlocke rules, it was always with the goal of having fun. "Hey I play this way because I find it more enjoyable, you may find that to be true later, or not and that's chill." Jan didn't talk down to people during their runs, he was giving advice so that they could try again and enjoy the game with newfound information. Jan has always done nuzlockes for fun, it's just that the most fun part of it has changed.

The time to emphasize the quality of storytelling and to get us equally invested into these pixels on your screen is nothing but seriously and un-ironically inspiring. The fact that the phrase “the friends we’ve made along the way” is one of the many truest takeaways you can have from the story is the testament to the origins of nuzlockes as you mentioned and I think that’s a beautiful story to tell.

I find it quite interesting that the plot writing of this video is basically the complete contrast of Alpharad's nuzlockes, since they are kind of rivals. While Alpharad started becoming more calculative and paying attention to each detail from battle mechanics and seeing the pokémon as "tools", in his latest nuzlockes, Pchal has finally started to believe in and cheer for his pokémon, even if they're dogshit, simply because he started getting attached.

Fighting this uphill battle when a run is essentially dead and beating insane trainers with extremely limited options was always the most fun for me in nuzlocking regardless if the run dies sooner or later actually. I even beat many difficult ROM hacks from a position like this and it always feels surreal in the best way imaginable.

It’s kind of funny how, Pchal and Alpharad have inverse character arcs in these videos.
Alpha was learning to view Pokémon more like numbers and spreadsheets for success while Pchal has started seeing his Pokémon with love and attachment. It’s very Ash vs Paul.

This kind of situation happens a lot in games of Football (soccer), the underdog team can out of nowhere play really well and beat teams that have in theory much much better players in their team. And those underdogs can often have a good run knocking out teams you thought were almost certain to win that game.
There's a famous saying that sums it up perfectly: "We had the best team on paper, unfortunately the game was played on grass".

Holy shit Jan just had his shonen character development moment. Not only did he become a battle-hungry beast like Nemona or Goku, he also actually started really caring about his team instead of seeing them mostly as numbered tools for a calculated purpose. The narrative on this, man, it was a delight to watch.

Man rediscovers the old point of nuzlockes
When I was first introduced to nuzlockes, they were advertised as a way to make you play the game with pokemon outside of your confort zone and to get more in touch with the team you could make, since there was always the chance you lost them. I think, without saying it, Jan rediscovered that here.
    And that's beautiful.

The greatest danger of Challenge Runs is when you stop seeing them as genuine challenges that can be failed and see them more as a checklist, at which point they stop being real challenges.
The whole point of a nuzlocke was to add a lose condition to pokemon and it's nice to see Jan rediscover that.

This whole video was written very well. If there was one moment I'd draw to attention, it's when Jan used Temporal Tower's theme when he knew time was running out. He knew what the ending was at that moment, but we didn't. The tower's theme for any PMD player invokes urgency and hype. Will they defeat the beast of time waiting, or will time define their fate of defeat? It's a terrifying, but exhilarating notion and it was showcased well here.
