I don't think there is necssarily anything wrong with the likes of William Roache and Barbara Knox, amongst others of their generation in soap-acting, going on in the show as long as they want, if it works for them, as they likely prefer having a continued social connection with the cast and crew and maybe would find it too hard now to leave and dettach themselves from it in their advanced years etc, but I think Helen, and other cast members of around her generation, will likely have been deeply affected by what sadly happened to Annie Kirkbride, who had just begun talking excitiedly about wanting to retire and the things she would do when she left the soap, but was then diagnosed with what turned out to be her final illness, which stole that much deserved retirement from her. In Helen's case I think she'd also have seen the media's huge coverage of Malcolm Hedben's significant ill health, and their probing and speculations about Eileen Derbyshire's health after she didn't return from her one year sabbatical, and given that Helen is a shy and private person she probably would want to leave the soap in a planned and controlled way on a high rather than stay and stay until ill health becomes visibly apparent on screen or forces her departure and either way causes the media to discuss her.
Its long term characters like Ken, Rita, Sally, Kevin, Steve etc who are holding this ailing show afloat, it doesnt have much time when the oldies die off.
Gail had one of the most far fetched lives on that street but you just want with it because of how she played it. I remember Helen being really sweet about that Corrie superfan that was murdered in the bombings and thought this is a really kind lady.
After 50 years of playing that character, it will mentally mess with her for a while, like a part of her has been taken away, its the most unique acting job you can get; soaps and the ones who stay for this long are a dying breed.
There are three actors in Coronation Street history who are like the holy trinity of the soap across 50 odd years. If you look at the episodes in the colour era that pulled in the really really huge ratings and still get talked about years later as standout episodes and storylines that gripped the nation and got media coverage, the main storyline of those most-watched episodes is either centred around the late great Annie Kirkbride (Ken/Mike love triangle, Weatherfield one etc), Dame Barbara of Knox (Alan Bradley storyline) or Helen Worth (Brian's stabbing, the Hillman storyline etc). Clearly the casting department at Granada in the early 70s, when all three were cast, must have been very very good at talent-spotting, and the storyliners and writers over the years knew who to give their very biggest storylines to.
@kiwiang 983 Couldn't agree more. Hated it when she used that whispery voice and constant blinking. I loved Corrie but not so much Gail's "acting" style.
Part of my world; the actress who has played Gail. What a despair of a Basketcase this soap has become since 2022. Classic Corrie my Goto. Credit to Helen. Lots of years brought of Memories.
Well it has not been our lovely corrie for a number of years, it's so far removed from the real cortie , it doesn't even resemble cortie and the character's WELL !!!. SHE , GAIL LEFT BEFORE SHE WAS PUSHED, GOOD ON HER.
Has she done any other acting work? I can't imagine only playing one character for your whole career then maybe find yourself typecast or nobody can see you playing anything else
According to IMDB she has 16 roles listed overall, but the last three are all Gail (as a Children In Need corrie sketch, and the movie version of Tram Crash week are separately credited). All of the other 11 roles are from before she was cast as Gail, with the earliest being a 1963 episode of Z Cars and probably the most notable being 6 episodes of Pertwee-era Doctor Who.
She is probably embarrassed to be on what is now the worst soap ever - the writers need to go!!!!! Final episode should be a huge sinkhole with that Vicar falling in first !!
what a nice thing for Denise to say about Helen well done
I completely agree with all the lovely things Denise said about Helen Worth
I'm a HUGE fan of Helen Worth, thank you Denise 😊
@TheMartinDuggan Coronation Street won't be the same
She has done the right thing some people don't know when to stop . Then it's too late go and enjoy yourself and spend more time with your family.

Cornation Street is not the same anymore
Then they’ve kept to the core values of the show. Neither is life.
It's not !!!! Even coronation street any more it's so far removed from the original one ,it's now a PC like load of piffle

I’m glad to know that.😊
Yes we are happy on our own.....
She forgone motherhood and a family for an acting career. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Just wish she didn’t whisper the last sentence of her lines all the time. Pretty irritating

I love that idea lol 🙏 Manifest it!
Correct decision for her to leave, the show is a sinking ship now
A 50 year stint wasn’t a hint for you?
@@Smooshes786 well yes thats more than enough for a soap i was just making a valid point

Yeah she does Lorraine on fridays or school holidays sometimes
We’ll miss Helen but not Gail lol
bye bye Gail Platt
Terrible actress. Her character went from a moody cow to a joke. Seems a decent lass though
She used to be a good actress. It’s been these last few years her acting has been weird.
The show has gone so woke
Gail platt miss you mam good luck for the future ❤
