Thought I'd leave an update here for anyone wandering into this video in the future: 1. Peach Turnip probably deserves a spot between 10 and 20. It leads into high damage combos even from the air, has great frame data even after the initial nerf, and has an excellent arc for edge guarding. 2. After some lovely chaps in the comments mentioned Robin's Arc Fire, I looked into it a little more, and while my gripes with the move still stand, it's pretty clear that the move has a ton of combo and ledge trapping potential that I largely dismissed in this video. Also a clear top 20 3. K Rool's Cannon Ball should definitely have the #1 spot because it's a big bouncy ball and it killed by little brother online. In all seriousness, thanks to those of you who left comments on this video, as it has only served to improve the discourse surrounding this game's meta. Love yous.
Honestly I'd put Pac-Man Bonus Fruit as the best projectile in the game. No other projectile in the game provides the sheer versatility and mixup potential of Bonus Fruit and can be used for zoning, combos, ledge trapping, edgeguarding, stage control, winning neutral (Bell specifically), setups, and so much more. Only other projectile that should come close is Charge Shot.
@@christopherreid3282 not even that huge of a problem since he can use Hydrant as a wall and shield or jump cancel thr charge whenever he wants. His nair is frame 3, giving him an amazing get-off-me tool in those situations, or can just chuck whatever Fruit he has in his hand at the opponent to launch them away, then recatch it and continue the charge rather than start it again.
I’d say the biggest problem with Bonus fruit is that you can’t B-reverse it which nearly every other chargeable projectile can do. For that reason alone, I’d say it goes down to ~5. Plus something like charge shot kinda of does everything bonus fruit can do without the complication. Kills, combo starts, wins neutral without needing finicky setups
@ThunDerd you van n turnaround it which is fine enough. Not to mention you can just throw them as neutral tools since they combo and apply pressure on their own. He doesn't need setups for them to be good.
As someone who doesn't know a ton about the competitive side of Smash, this video was still pretty interesting to me because I like to play several of these characters and now I have something to refer to to give some of their moves a more practical application. Pac-Man especially, I think I'll have to come back to him next time I pick up Ultimate. ;) Great video, am!
No cap I'm surprised Gordo wasn't even in honorable mention. Like out of the context of slow DDD is, it'd be busted on a fast character. In context it makes DDD viable as a secondary. Allowing him to cover his recovery, to combo with, stuff approaches, to be one of the better ledge trappers, and a good mix up projectile overall. But because DDD is slow and Gordo can be hit back it does make sense. That being said I think you take either away and DDD is definitely high tier
I feel like Robin's projectiles are really good tbh especially neutral special imo. Thunder, Elthunder, Archthunder and Thoron serve their purpose really well and are all great for someone like Robin to have. Again they have weapon durability but in a vaccuum, these projectiles are really good and its kinda unfair to dismiss these because of the limited uses but I dont blame you lol
Yeah, I've gotten a few Robin comments that corroborate your perspective. I mentioned that arc fire especially should have been in the top 20 (and definitely Peach's turnip...) in a comment I made on this video, but I forgot to pin it (that issue has now been corrected ;) ). Cards on the table, my knowledge of Robin was at the time limited to watching the character getting bodied at a higher level, so I don't know if it's Robin's buff, wifi helping, or Robin mains getting better, but their projectiles look for more deadly than I initially gave them credit for. All that to say, in response to your comment: my thoughts exactly ;)
Imo I think pacmans bonus fruit is by far the best in the entire game. Waayyy to versatile. It’s too good. Also, I think pk thunder should have made the top 20. It’s also a combo tool and sets up for ridiculous traps due to the angle it launches at. It moves faster than Nikita which is also a bonus. Pk thunder tackle is also WAY too safe for how strong it is. If you hit the opponent with the tail first, you can easily hit them with the tackle after. He also has a lot of baits with it. Incredible projectile But aside from that, this is a really good video.
You've made some compelling points :) I honestly wish the community would have more lists like these pertaining to projectiles so there could be a greater degree of discourse surrounding the subject. Till then, looks like it's just me, you, and the roughly 300 other people who have seen this vid :p
Surprised Banjo bomb didn’t make the honorable mentions. It’s super good at controlling neutral and combo starting. Basically an non hitbackable gordo.
Since the video came before Sephiroth, I'm wondering where you'd put his side-b? Where did Metal Blade land on? I would like to see your thoughts on some amazing projectiles that are really good at doing one specific thing (G&W up-air at juggling, for instance), since the list requirements prioritize versatility quite a bit. Amazing video.
Turnip is absolutely busted. Does 12%-15% depending on throw distance, leads to ridiculous combos, kills off stage, is good in neutral, advantage and disadvantage and can just be a winky, dot eyes, stitch, mr Saturn or bomb. Imo it's the best projectile in the game.
No splat bomb? Reflecting it doesn't bother Inkling and you have to go around it or stay in shield and throw the match. Some reflectors detonate it too.

Imo Trick Shot should be higher. While you did mention some of the strengths of Trick Shot, you neglected to mention the most important one: *neutral.* The move is ridiculously good at controlling space, better than almost any other projectile in the game, due to the fact that you can hit it with attacks, you can ping it in different directions, and you can set it up in any location you want to basically create a region of dead space. This gives it unparalleled versatility in stage control, seeing as how you can hit and ping it in so many different ways, creating and breaking zones at will along with setting traps for the opponent. In addition, the fact that you can ping Can whenever you want is ridiculous. Duck Hunt can ping Trick Shot at any point, like if he's in the air, on the ground, in the endlag of a move, recovering with Up B, in freefall from Up B, asleep, in shield, shieldbroken, knocked down, etc. With extreme precision, practice, and game awareness, Duck Hunt basically becomes a puppet character, because precise inputs with Can and Duck Hunt can create situations where both are exerting pressure on the opponent at the same time. Not only that, but the sheer versatility of the move makes it one of the most broken projectiles of all time. With Can, you can edgeguard, recover, combo, combo break, ledgetrap, get off ledge, pressure, escape pressure, juggle, land, kill confirm off of it, kill confirm into it, etc. Can also does 12%, which makes it good at even just dealing damage. While Can is not stellar in all aspects, it is at least above average to broken in all of them, which makes Trick Shot, in my opinion, a top 5 projectile in Smash Ultimate. Can simply suffers from the fact that it gets little to no exposure due to there being so few Duck Hunt mains, and the skill ceiling to use it to its full potential is possibly higher than some entire characters.
I basically see it as a differently balanced version of your explanation of gyro. It can do everything, not necessarily as well as projectiles with that specific strength, but it still does it. Can is able to act like nikita, grenade, pikmin throw, hydrant, phantom, holy fire, egg throw, and even more projectiles on the list.
Damn, this was very well articulated, so I'll start by thanking you for trying to educate me on the subject. Duck hunt is super weird--some posts on the DH Discord straight up called Trick Shot the best projectile in the game, so that had me at least curious. Its ability to control space is definitely a strong tool in neutral, so I perhaps didn't account for that enough. I think my bias may have come from my experience in Smash 4 in which the can could lead to kill confirms, and its lack of kill presence really hurt Duck Hunt in Ultimate in my eyes. You've given me a lot to think about. My big dilemma with putting the move higher is that Duck Hunts haven't been doing all that great in the meta, and if the move is so incredible, then why is that the case? Then again, DH representation has always been lacking due to his generally more defensive playstyle, so that could be a contributor. Furthermore, maybe all of the rest of his moves just suck and it's just a busted move on an otherwise bad character (I think that might be more likely tbh :P). Again, thanks for the well thought out response. I hope others in the comments section take the time to hear you out on this topic. Trick Shot is super complex, but the video was already 45 minutes long, so I didn't want to go too in depth with the bottom of the list. Thanks for helping to fill that gap.
@@themanicpineapple8772 Thank you for the well worded response as well! To be honest, I, and many others, think Trick Shot is the best projectile in the game *excluding items*. Items are absolutely broken in this game, and getting 0 To Deaths with gyro is something Can will never be able to quite match. I agree that the very low Duck Hunt representation is a main reason why this projectile doesn't get quite as much exposure, but part of the reason could also be due to how hard it is to use the move well. There is never a "specific" use for Can in any situation, and this makes it hard to find optimal uses for Can. Also, there is an over 30 page document exclusively about Can's properties, which shows how ridiculously complicated the move is. Also, Duck Hunt basically wouldn't be a character without Can, which speaks to how absurd of a move it is. An easily edgeguardable recovery, an exploitable neutral, below average advantage state, and okay ledgetrapping are just some of the problems that Can helps to solve. Thank you for your time, and I hope you have a great day!
Yeah, I can agree with the lists. Still, I wonder where the Pit's arrows would be on the list. Also would Corrin's Dragon Fang Shot even count? It's a projectile, but it's also mainly useful as a Melee attack.
Robin's Arcfire is much better than PK Fire in my opinion. It gives a free edgeguard or ledgetrap (and Robin's ledgetrap is S tier), it kills around 50%, plus, the hurtbox is way longer than PK Fire, it creates opportunities to setup some Robin's insane combos (Checkmate 2.0, Galeforce,... ) which kill at 40%
I agree that Arcfire is much better at the ledge than PK Fire--it lasts over 1 second, and has a hitbox as big as Robyn himself. I think the reason I put PK Fire so much higher is because Ness is so much faster in general. This means that while Robin hitting a distant ArcFire means that he can't start a combo most of the time, PK Fire is something that Ness can almost always take advantage of. Furthermore, the fact that Arcfire runs out in the middle of the match, while not the end of the world in most situations, means that it loses points for versatility, and can't just be spammed as much as PK Fire can. That said, you've made a compelling case for me removing it from the dishonourable mentions section--thanks for leaving such a well articulated comment :)
Bro where is pyra's blazing edge? it does 30 percent, massive shield damage, you can move around and shield while the hitbox is out and it hangs out on the ledge making recovery torture for charicters like chrom and byleth. so broken and cheats hard. no idea how its not on here
In that case, you'd be in agreement with a good few of the top level contributors to this project ;) Link's bomb is a marvelous tool--I just think the frame data on Gyro is grossly unfair, and leads to easier combos, which is why I put it a little higher. I respect your opinion though
Mario vs pikachu nuetral B M 17-49, P 19-51 Fball interferes other projectiles, Tbold often misses TBolr has little to no hit stun so characters can get hit by Tbolt and still respond before pika can do much. Mario's fireball wins, and thunder bolt shouldn't be on this list at all.
Nice vid m8! When will the anime analysis coming out tho? Wolf laser should have been in this top and Bowser fire shouldn't. 14:38 Is ThAt A mOtHeRf@#$nG jOjO rEfRenCe!?!?????!!??
Sheik's needles are a neutral tool, kill confirm, edguguard tool, camping tool and mobility tool and you only put it in honorable mentions??? This move does everything you want, it's literally a top 5 projectile.
I do think it's dummy good. I'm just not sure if I'd throw it as high as something like Pikmin toss, which is used consistently at all points in a game. Sheik players do use the move a lot, but the charge time makes it quite a bit less spammable than some other moves on this list. Still excellent though, so I'm glad someone else sees how strong the move is :p
Honestly great question. I think Steve DLC may have changed this list a little, but Seph, MinMin, and Kazuya don't mess with much in the rankings luckily. Honestly, I'm curious to see what happens to Mine Cart in the IRL meta, since it looked incredible online with all the lag. We'll see what happens over the course of the next year
Excellent question. My knowledge of the Miis is a tad limited. I remember that I used to think tornado was busted when the game came out due to the early kill confirms, but now I almost seem to see charkram used as to most common distance keeping tool, so I'm not sure what to think of it. I think charkram is a great projectile overall from what I've seen because it just comes out so damn fast and has some versatility thanks to a variety of throw arcs. That move would probably make its way onto a top 30 list, because it's good at what it does, but doesn't have the same versatility as some of the best projectiles in the game
Certainly a strong move, up there with the best up smashes in the game. But its neutral and combo applications don't rank nearly as high as everything else here, and those are two things I value a lot. Its dummy good at the ledge though
I admittedly don't know enough about Lucario's patches to know if it would be worth it, but because the move's utility is contingent on Lucario being down in the game, it would score very low in terms of accessibility (or flexibility of use). I know it was busted in Smash 4 though because you could use it at a close range to kill confirm. Feel free to let mw know why you think it should be on the list
@@themanicpineapple8772 It works in Ultimate about the same. Its the only projectile that makes damage while charging and there are many combo possibilities. By the way is Lucario not "down", its just way to risky to paly against top players, but completely fine in low-mid elo. Lucario can be reallly scary and the only reason for that is hes aura sphere. + B-reversing / wavebouncing are crazy with the aura sphere:
Well, Duck Hunt Can did in fact make it onto my list near the bottom of top 20 :p There's a very well-written comment from a Duck Hunt main that is the best argument I've seen for putting it higher, and they were pretty convincing. You might have to scroll a bit to find our covo, but it pretty much sums up all of my thoughts on Trick Shot
If you wanna list those awful opinions, go ahead. I know we've been on lan, so that affects our perceptions a ton, but Gun has been largely irrelevant in the meta, while Gyro has been absolutely meta defining at top level to the point where ROB has dominated much of the online meta. Also, to reiterate, Gun technically isn't even a projectile (the game legit doesn't recognize it as such) so there's no way that would make it on the list. As for turnip, that was my B: I'm shocked neither BAP nor I didn't think to add it to the list, but it's absolutely top 10 minimum... hence why I have my pinned comment from a while back :p
@@Metalc it can be very good since it's weak/small shadow ball has a lot of utility on its own, paired with strong shadow ball that has as much power as a charge shot but on a much more mobile character.
I gave my explanation as to why I don't think it belongs on my list in the dishonorable mentions if you're curious about my thoughts. I think it could make its way onto a different list, but this one had very specific criteria, none of which did any favors for Wolf's blaster. I respect your opinion though
@@themanicpineapple8772 I don't know how one can be capable of coming up with such a competent criteria Godzilla based off of their own ideas and still come up with a borderline nonsensical list of answers such as this one it beyond baffles me TL:DR "You had me in the first [quater] not gonna lie"

Honourable mention goes to KRool's ball! It comes out frame 0, has infinite hitstun, and links into just straight up turns you into a random, better character if it lands.
Krool's "ball" isn't really that good of a projectile tho. Its very laggy and some character can even punish it on reaction. It doesn't actually pressure anyone who isnt at point blank. its pretty good at ledge trapping tho, but thats a lot due to the suck part after which imo the best part of that move. However since the succ isnt a projectile, it didnt influence the ranking of the actual projectile part of the move. I think a lot of people might assume the move is good because its a lot harder to deal with on wifi, but overall in a vacuum almost no other character would rather have that move over anything else. Hope that makes sense and wasn't written to weirdly lol.

Bro where is pyra's blazing edge? it does 30 percent, massive shield damage, you can move around and shield while the hitbox is out and it hangs out on the ledge making recovery torture for charicters like chrom and byleth. so broken and cheats hard. no idea how its not on here
personally i think links is better than gyro
In that case, you'd be in agreement with a good few of the top level contributors to this project ;) Link's bomb is a marvelous tool--I just think the frame data on Gyro is grossly unfair, and leads to easier combos, which is why I put it a little higher. I respect your opinion though
Mario vs pikachu nuetral B
M 17-49, P 19-51
Fball interferes other projectiles, Tbold often misses
TBolr has little to no hit stun so characters can get hit by Tbolt and still respond before pika can do much.
I've got a few videos in the works, but there's an anime one in there for you ;) Glad you enjoyed the vid
goku kamehameha when he comes out will be strongest
Master Chief's Spartan Lazor will be better imo
Sheik's needles are a neutral tool, kill confirm, edguguard tool, camping tool and mobility tool and you only put it in honorable mentions???
This move does everything you want, it's literally a top 5 projectile.
I do think it's dummy good. I'm just not sure if I'd throw it as high as something like Pikmin toss, which is used consistently at all points in a game. Sheik players do use the move a lot, but the charge time makes it quite a bit less spammable than some other moves on this list. Still excellent though, so I'm glad someone else sees how strong the move is :p
will you update this when FP 2 is over, I mainly say this because of the entirety that is Steve
We'll see what happens over the course of the next year
Needles have mad optimization now
Yuppers: glad I got that prediction right :p can't wait to see Sheik in the offline meta
Thoughts on chakram and tornado on mii swordie?
Excellent question. My knowledge of the Miis is a tad limited. I remember that I used to think tornado was busted when the game came out due to the early kill confirms, but now I almost seem to see charkram used as to most common distance keeping tool, so I'm not sure what to think of it. I think charkram is a great projectile overall from what I've seen because it just comes out so damn fast and has some versatility thanks to a variety of throw arcs. That move would probably make its way onto a top 30 list, because it's good at what it does, but doesn't have the same versatility as some of the best projectiles in the game
Where is snake up smash? That thing is nuts
Certainly a strong move, up there with the best up smashes in the game. But its neutral and combo applications don't rank nearly as high as everything else here, and those are two things I value a lot. Its dummy good at the ledge though
@@themanicpineapple8772 got it, I was wondering. Thank you!
@@thescarfguy No worries :) Hope you enjoyed the video!
I'm a little confused as to why you had Gas Gas Gas by Manuel playing for Eiha.
Be careful: they say if you overthink it, it'll give you gas ;)
Lucario's aura sphere...
@@themanicpineapple8772
It works in Ultimate about the same.
What about duck hunt can? I feel it’s very good for controlling space
Well, Duck Hunt Can did in fact make it onto my list near the bottom of top 20 :p There's a very well-written comment from a Duck Hunt main that is the best argument I've seen for putting it higher, and they were pretty convincing. You might have to scroll a bit to find our covo, but it pretty much sums up all of my thoughts on Trick Shot
why isnt peach turnips on this list?
I agree that the lack of Turnips is one of the few shortcomings on this list. They're definitely in the top 20 at least
Joker up b is the best projectile
It was so obvious that I didn't even bother putting it on the list--would have been too cliched as the number one spot
Now I understand why, it makes sense xd
I wanted someone say like:
Wait, thats a projectile?
And I say:
Always has been
xd
Good microphone, good videos, good avatar but 900 subscribers😲😲😲😲😲😲😲
a lot of this makes sense but then there's just a myriad of awful opinions like the #1 spot, your stance on gun, the complete absence of turnip, etc.
NO SHADOWBALL? NOT EVEN A MENTION? How do you sleep at night?
Shadow ball isn’t that good
@@Metalc It's actually pretty good. Could have used an honorable mention but it isnt among the best of the best.
@@Metalc it can be very good since it's weak/small shadow ball has a lot of utility on its own, paired with strong shadow ball that has as much power as a charge shot but on a much more mobile character.
So wolf's neutral B must have not be capable of being reflected cuz that's the only reason why I can see it not being on this list
@@QaptainSlander Much love hombre--I too am a big fan of Godzilla
@@themanicpineapple8772 ?
@@QaptainSlander According to you, I, quote: created a "competent criteria Godzilla based off of their own ideas". So I'm merely appreciating your love of Godzilla as well as your immaculate articulation
No KRool ball, 0/10 😤😤😤😤
@@ssbpapillon5751 99% sure he was joking ;) Great explanation though
