I've been slowly accumulating westerns all year for this
Hello , Michael! I am from Ukraine , and I am a big fan of Westerns! I just read Lonesome Dove a week ago. Fantastic book! It became one of my favorites.
Thank you for your great channel.
Lonesome Dove is excellent.
Hi mate, hope you're not sick of hearing this kind of thing, but honestly my heart goes out to your country and I wish my country was doing a lot more to help. The world is mental, and you guys should have more support against insane autocracies...
@@NP-Hunt Hi! Thank you for kind words! We (Ukrainians) are grateful for all support that we receive from all civilized world. Without this support Ukraine would become the part of this autocracy (USSR 2.0). Absolute majority of Ukrainians want to be the part of EU, we do not want to back in USSR.
Can’t wait to read Lonesome Dove myself! Heard great things from the channel about it.
Thanks Yelisiei!
"Tarnation!!!" 😜😂🤣😝🤠
Challenge accepted! I've never read any Westerns. But I had an uncle who read and owned every Zane Grey novel. I'll pick out a couple in his honor/memory. Great video.
Never read any but I have enjoyed some great westerns like high noon, Shane and 3:10 to Yuma. If I thought of it. I could probably rattle off a few more. Also enjoyed the quasi-western TV show wild, wild west.
I'm taking this challenge! I haven't read many westerns, but I'm super interested. I think I'll raid my son's library because he has lots of western themed books on his shelf. Thanks for hosting this one!
Stand up, Tom Cheney!
And smash that like button.
A local little free library had a whole tarnation worth of Max Brand novels so I reckon’ that’s what I’m gonna read. 🤠. Yeehaw it’s almost June on the Range!
Fantastic! I can’t wait to saddle up again
I enjoyed June on the Range last year so will join you once again.
Alright! I will not fall down this year! I’ve already got my Louis L’Amour book ready to go! 💪
Got my copy of Lone Star Ranger saddled up an waitin', maybe I can rustle up somethin' else..
Looking forward to this.
Oooo Love the westerns. You've got a great bunch to choose from. I really love the Longarm series by Tabor Evans. The pulpier the western the better.
Max Brand too. I've also thought about collecting the "Nevada Jim" series just to own the covers. They were packaged to look like "Doc Savage as a Western", even to the point of having Doc artist James Bama paint the covers.
Going to try to get my hands on some reprints of the James Boys dime novels that are available. If I can't do that, I'll read some Jonah Hex comics.
Been reading a lot of Louis L'amore this year already, so this video has come at precisely the right time for me. I live in Glasgow, and there's a great market nearby and there's a seller hidden away in there that just sells a TON of used western paperbacks. Normally for like £2 a piece. Lucky to have a fantastic resource like that on my doorstep.
My Granddad left Fochabers, came to the states and ended up homesteading in Wyoming. I spent the first five years of my life on his cattle ranch!!
@@glockensig that's awesome!
Going to read Lonesome Dove and Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee this year. Then I'll probably supplement with Zane Grey novels since I have a ton on the Kindle.
Westerns are great fun to read. Nice video, Michael.
Thanks Gary!
I have Doc as well as Epitaph by Mary Doria Russell along with some Elmer Kelton. I'm all set for June on the Range!
Can’t wait! I enjoyed every western I read last year. I loved the character Dan Barry and read The Seventh Man by Max Brand and this year I’m reading The Untamed. He has a wolf dog and an amazing horse! Then I’m reading Sebastian Barry’s Days Without End and A Thousand Moons. I want to read something by Louise Erdrich too.
I truly enjoyed reading Max Brand as a youth. He had some really odd characters. I liked the fact that he never used real places to plant his stories in... and yes, Dan Barry was an amazing character. I also remember the wolf dog and horse although I remember nothing about the story!
This is going o be awesome
Hi Mike. I’ve got some ideas, and seen a few places where I can get some Westerns. I pretty confident where I can find some L’Amour and Zane Grey. If I can get it, the Richard Matheson western material is a hole in my Matheson collection so it’s about time I got those….I will definitely be aiming for those at least. I’ll do a TBR video for it in May I think….
If you can find Journal of the Gun Years by Matheson I think you will be pretty happy with it.
I'm with you on this one Michael. I was brought up on Westerns as my grandfather was a massive fan of them and his favourite series was...Edge. So I'm going to read the Loner in honour of him.
I read a whole pile of Edge back in the day, kind of a guilty pleasure. Written by a Brit.
@@russworks2882 yes I know. My grandfather didn't feel guilty in the least. Absolutely loved them.
There are places where the Western is very much alive … CJ Box, Craig Johnson …
I am so up for this ! I do love a good Western movie, but for some reason have not read any. When i had my old channel funnily enough wanted to do a Western readathon, so am so happy to see this video, I for sure will be joining in!
I have a couple dozen westerns I got from a used bookstore so I can't wait to join
You got me laughing when the big pile of paperbacks appeared. 😂 Tarnation!
Hi. I count Lonesome Dove as one of my favorite books, so I think I will try to read more from him. I also just picked up an audiobook of something by Lamour. So that is set. Thanks for hosting this!
What a coincidence… I picked up a Louis L’Amour book and a Zane Grey book this weekend! Huh…… should I dust off the old cowboy hat?…. Nahh……….
🤔 …….☁️🤠☁️……. 🤔
If you want to read a real long and really good western about the area I grew up in..... Centennial by James Michner!!
Hadn't heard of that Zane Grey. Snagged it from PG - looks good. Roger's conducting a good book club.
As for choosing one of the NOT Zane Grey and NOT Louis L'Amour, why not randomize the choice?
Nice Stetson, there, and even a fancy Western shirt. Very nice.
I heard of June on the Rage via the Digging Books channel (I think that’s what her channel is called) and she was so enthusiastic about it that I decided to participate (for the first time) in my humble way by reading a Western. I’ve seen loads of Western films when I was a kid, but never read one. I decided to read ‘Doc’ by Mary Doria Russell as I wanted to read more about the women in that time period. I just ordered it so I hope it’s going to arrive soon as I’m a slow reader.
I need to get 2 more Westerns! I really want to do June on the Range. It sounds like fun. I hope re reads count because I plan to re read Lonesome Dove as my final book of June. I haven't read it since the TV series came out back in the 80's.
Awesome selection of books
Thanks!
I finally started reading Lonesome Dove after your material, so far it rocks!
I will dig through my unread books and see what I have for June on the Range. Looking forward to it!
i'm so excited i just picked up my first zane grey novel (i'm very new to the genre) and its riders of the purple sage. Can't wait to dig into this world
I like these suggestions. I read a bunch of Louis Lamour and Zane Grey when I was younger. My plan is to binge on Larry McMurtry, but I bet I can squeeze in some of them other two, hoss. 👨🌾
I will try to keep in mind to do more than an Edge book in June when I finalize my tbr. Maybe take a break from my Dresden Files reread for a month to fit in a L'amour. I recently saved 3 of his books and haven't read any of his works in decades. I tried a book or two back in the day when one of my grandfathers was getting, I think it was Time-Life, some series of his books.
Will definitely read that ZG for Roger's club, and a LAmour for sure (let us know which one you're gonna pick!). Paulette Jiles (News of the World) has another book I might check out. She's more on the McMurtry/literary side. Or Holborne's Nunslinger. That one looks awesome. Ordered a Terry C. Johnston yesterday, but I might devour that before June. So so so many great options...I've got analysis paralysis.
Hi Michael, I am ashamed to say I have never read a western novel, The closest I have come is Gone With the Wind. But in my defense I live in the UK and I have never seen a second hand western on the book shelf. As always I shall endeavour to do better!
Give them a try if you get the chance!
I'm so excited that it's nearly time for June on the Range again!! Speaking of ranges(LOL) I noticed the one behind you is the same one I have. Life is one weird coincidence after another. The only western authors I will read for sure(so far) are Louis L'Amour and Elmore Leonard. Time to rummage around on the shelves!
I will read Streets of Laredo.
When I was a kid, it had never occurred to me there might be written westerns. To me it was strictly films. I remember seeing a western (probably Louis L'Amour) in a grocery store and it was like seeing a unicorn.
Howdy! I have my Louis L'Amour books already picked out for June.
Fantastic!
You've got some good selections there Michael. You couldn't go wrong with any Luke Short book. Lamour's Man Called Noon is also a good read. An author not mentioned who was exceptional is Nelson Nye. I grew up in the sixties reading Zane Grey and still have fond memories of his stories.
I have a bunch of Nye as well.
Lined up I have: The Last Kind Word Saloon (McMurty), The Searchers (Le May) , and L'Amour's How The West Was Won (which I think is the novel of the movie?).
Yeah, I think so too.
Love the cowboy outfit!
Random - I only know the name Zane Grey because I'm a huge M*A*S*H fan and one of the characters (Colonel Potter) was a fan of his books!
@@justdon6288 Just finished watching a couple eps this evening!
I watch Western movies from time to time, but I think the last time I read a Western novel was in college, reading Owen Wister’s The Virginian for a class. May as well fix that. I know I have Lonesome Dove here, and will see what night go with that.
Great video. Are there certain tropes that draw you to Westerns in particular? Always interested to know why readers like the genres they like.
I probably like most of the tropes!
Would love to join June on the Range this year! Just finished Red Dead Redemption 2, really got me in the mood!
thanks
I don't read many Westerns, but The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a five-star book.
Not longed joined your channel and will definetly be reading westerns for June on the Range . As I am a Brit I will be picking up and reading 4 of novels from the various Piccadilly Cowboy series - Edge , Adam Steele etc.
I’m planning on reading some more Edge in June as well.
Great video, Michael 😊 I'm excited to do this and my main focus is going to be L'Amour with a couple of other authors, maybe Zane Grey or William W Johnstone, and I'm also intrigued by Gene Jackman's Book, Payback at Morning Peak!
Just found your video through Sarah (The Bookish Knitter). This sounds like so much fun! I am following Sarah's lead and plan on reading Cowboy Romances. Off to find a few.
Excellent!
Hah! Thought that book stack was photo-shopped in at first, should’ve known better.
Going to try and read Lonesome Dove this June on your recommendation.
You will not be disappointed.
Last year I did 1, we'll be shooting to double that and go for 2 this year!
Read Doc for June on the Range last year and it's fantastic. Also picked up Epitath but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I've heard it's just as good.
Totally agree. Doc outstrips all the other contenders by a mile. And you're in a treat with Epitath. I read them back to back (Doc first) and Epitath is even better.
Interesting! I know of mary Doria Russel because of her science fiction trilogy, which i still haven't read but am very interested in.
Im buddy reading Elmore Leonard's The Complete Western Stories (and might throw in a reread of McMurtry 's _Lonesome Dove_ ) 😎🤠🤓
Excellent!
I have never read a western but willing to try one. Hope you make a recommendation video. 🙂
I will!
I’ve got a short story collection from Louis Lamore I’m planning to read for June on the range.
Another option I’d recommend for people who may not read westerns on a regular basis is Michael Chriton’s “Dragon Teeth.” It’s definitely not a standard western, no ranchers defending their land or such, and it’s more centered around archaeology. But there are some shoot outs, and mostly western settings.
Hello Michael Hello. I hope someday you can recommend the must read list of westerns, the most admirable genre of narrative fiction side by side with sword and sorcery, science fiction, and horror stories .
I will go for 4 ! I have a Mary Doria Russell but forget which one, I need to find it. Great Irish accent btw 🤭🤭
Thanks! I’ve been working on it.
Plenty of fodder for the 500 book challenge on that table 😮
Yes!
I am all in for June on the Range with a group read at my channel for Lonesome Dove, a Longarm book, and Victor LaValle’s new book, Lone Women.
But I have to ask, where are the female hosts representing JOTR?
That’s a good question. You should join the gang!
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 If that is an invitation, then I gladly accept! 🤠
@@M-J excellent!
🤠
June on the Range is a good name/theme, but what about “High Noon June” instead!?! 🤠
Too late! Good name though.
Hello, i'm french and i read Western Novels like you ;-) But in my country most US western books are not translate en french. This saddens me. Because my English is not sufficient to appreciate the literary quality of a english text. I like so much yours videos, thx. Encore merci ;-) / Roland.
Keep reading and your English will get better! Thanks for watching and for the kind words.
No Len Meares (Grover Marshall). He wrote 700! All published in Australia. I think my old man read the lot. Interesting guy (Meares, not the old man) - you should look him up.
Also surprised that there is no Elmore Leonard. His prose is better than anyone you mentioned in the video.
Michael, read Incident at Twenty-Mile, dag nab it!
I have it ready to go!
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Yay!
Mary Doria Russell also wrote The Sparrow, one of best SF novels of the past 30 years, it won a shed load of awards including the Arthur C Clarke, unfortunately it's sequel Children of God was in my opinion, crap.
My father had the complete works of Zane Gray
Your father had excellent taste.
I like to read cowboy romance books.
I'm with you!
I think that every western that Zane Grey ever wrote was a romance. 😊😊😊
The old stuff is great, but I really think you should try to support those few people who are still writing westerns... and I did send you one from 2021, even if it is in the dreaded Kindle format. 😉
I got those and appreciate your sending them. I will charge up that dreaded Kindle!
Cowboy culture is still quite popular in parts of Germany, so I hear.
I have to laugh as there are Western-based romances being written, but certainly not as many as Regency-style.
(Have you ever seen the movie, "Christmas in the Clouds"? It has become one of my favorites. It's a great movie with a number of comedies of errors, and through it is a running joke about most of the people reading a 'bodice-ripper' about a "Buffalo Thunder" and a woman named "Vanessa".
I had somehow gotten my hands on a bunch of Zane Grey's books. I have to see if any are still here, although I think they were given away. I will have to admit that I have not read many westerns. I got turned off of Louis L'amour when I heard him say that the Indians deserved to have the land taken from them by any means because they weren't using it to its fullest potential, that land always belongs to whoever will 'farm it'. Yeah,um, no.
Never saw Christmas in the Clouds.
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 See it. I can't recommend it more highly. Good story, great acting and if for no other reason, for the subplot of Graham Green's portrayal of the resort's chef who wants everyone to go vegan.
I still love westerns. Fuck tiktok books.
Wanted to join your discord but it says it's invalid?
Sorry, I didn’t realize the link on that video had an expiration date. I fixed it. Sorry!
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 oohh thanks!!
why are you so cute??
It’s a genetic condition.
