While it's true that this episode isn't exactly the strongest or the most nuanced, I also think it comes off worse than it is simply because of where they put it in the season: right when the main story arc is ramping up to a climax, and character emotions are supposed to be at their highest all around, we're suddenly tossed this random wacky monster-of-the-week story out of left field. If it had come much earlier in the first half of the season, then I doubt it would be nearly as hated.
I actually hate Killed by Death about equally as much, both for its place in the season, and just because I hate the feel of it with most of it being set in the hospital instead the usual places. There are very few Buffy episodes I consistently skip on rewatch, this one and KBD are two of them.
@@lenr112 I read somewhere that this episode was actually written for season one but not produced until later which makes sense given the more "monster of the week" format of season 1
Throughout the high school years, Cordelia represents Buffy's path not taken. That just really hit me in particular during Corey's speech to the fish she thought was Zander. Buffy can't love Angel as the monster he turned into, and so of course her shadow-self chose to love her beau as a monster. Poor Buffy.

The main reason people hate this episode really isn't due to the quality. Sure, it's bad but I'd argue it's better than say "Inca Mummy Girl" or "Reptile Boy." This episode's cardinal sin is where in the season it ended up airing. They shouldn't have put ANY standalones in between "Innocence" and this point but it was a different time and 22 episode seasons meant you got stuff like this. "Killed By Death" gets away with it because it's a superior episode, even though Angel's presence in it seems forced. In this one it's REALLY forced because it's fairly obvious that this was an earlier episode that was partially rewritten to accommodate the season arc. One of the ways that you can tell that this and KBD were written earlier is that OZ doesn't make an appearance. Although this isn't the greatest episode of Buffy, there is a kind of backdoor season arc that plays out in this episode. Over the course of season 2, they go through the roster of classic Universal monsters, you get Frankenstein, The Mummy, Wolfman, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and of course Dracula on any given episode. It's pretty cool when you think about it.
An argument could be made the arc starts with the Invisible Man/girl in "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" in season 1, but it's unclear if that was meant to be part of this arc.
And...now that you got there, the season 3 episode "Beauty and the Beasts", is certainly a nod to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which would also fall into this, now, multi-season arc. I can't say if there's more coming, that would be spoiling it.

9:38 Yes it is a stereotype - however it has its roots in reality because especially in the USA athletes often are priviliged and many of them are bullies.
Hi Thor ! If you like that kind of thematics (privileges, power abuses... well all sorts of abuses) dealt in TV Shows but maybe in a non-supernatural way, and if you haven't seen it, you may want to give a try to Veronica Mars (maybe for later reactions). A show that came a few year after Buffy, and approved and liked by a big part of the cast and crew (and fans) of Buffy. Also, let me play devil's attorney here : but about leaving the swim team live their best life in the ocean... That was pretty specist to judge they should be eliminated just because they might be harmful to people from times to times, when there's best chances they can feed (and fill their other needs) with other submarine species. After all, they were mutated from shark DNA... Would you consider sharks should be erased because sometimes, they attack humans ?
Stereotypes? Maybe. Reality? Yes. I went to high school in the 90s and someone wearing a jersey = someone who would go out of their way to try to make me miserable. I would be openly and loudly harassed even DURING class and many teachers would just pretend not to notice. The football coach was also a PE teacher and you wouldn’t believe the language he used. I’d never heard so many misogynistic slurs aimed at kids before. He ran things like he was a drill sergeant and he was constantly rewarded for it. So yeah, even though this episode is considered one of the worst, I think Thor is right in stating that it brings up some important points.
I think a lot of PE teachers/coaches are a huge problem. They were usually the ones encouraging and even inciting bullying at the schools I went to. The only PE teacher I had who was entirely professional was a science/biology teacher who also covered health/PE (he was also the only one who understood and accepted that I didn't want to participate in the physical stuff, he would mostly let me chill as long as I was nominally participating I.e. standing somewhere on the court/field). Like, they're meant to be the responsible adult in the room and half of them are just as bad as the kids.
Honestly Snyder is such a fun character, yeah. I think a lot of that goes to the writers, but I also think that he wouldn’t work half so well as he does if his actor didn’t sell the lines so very well.
Ah, this one. I think I would have liked this one more if it had been at the beginning of the season. It feels more like a Season 1 episode. So close to the finale, it is very out of place. Well, you were right: Spike and Dru survived the episode lol.
This episode is considered one of the lowest rated, but it has a moment or two of good things: Cordelia and Xander's episode arc, and seeing Buffy willing to kill Angelus (same as _Killed by Death_ when she was hunting while sick). That is something Angelus realizes, so to get away he throws Gage at her. It helps that he was spitting out gross blood, also. Those are some rare good moments. At the same time, this is far from my personal least favorite episode.
@@buffy17mike I didn't say bad I said considered a lower rated and that there are ones I consider lower on my list. Personally I don't hate any episode. There are some that are hard to watch though. This episode has moments that are hard, but the overall-ness is fine. I don't think it's as entertaining as it could be.
I quite liked your analysis of this truly baffling episode. I've realized my main issue with it isn't the rape jokes or even its close proximity to the finale, but that unlike every other MotW this season, it didn't tie into the main themes of the season or Buffy's journey at all. It's totally valid and interesting subject matter to dive (ha) into, but like- what does all this have to do with anything? Even Bad Eggs was full of metaphor and foreshadowing of the Angelus twist.
They might attack people but the ocean has plenty of fish and crustaceans to eat so they could go into the depths of the ocean and never be seen again.
This episode always strikes me as the last "Bad" episode. In the sense that the show got a lot better in season 2 and beyond compared to the campy footless sense of season1. A lot of people will cite things like "Innocence" as where the show finally became good. But I always felt this was the turning point.
Well stereotypes exist for a reason sometimes. In fiction you are encouraged to use some stereotypes because they are relatable to the audience. I went to high school in the 90's. All the athletes were complete jerks all the time. I was assaulted at least twice by football players. One time throwing a rock at my head. I had to have stitches. And another time one threw a frozen ball of ice at my face. Completely unprovoked. Both times teachers were present and they only got like a day suspension. There was a 17 year old football player who raped a 12 year old girl and he didn't get in ANY trouble. Still got a football scholarship! I moved around a lot, so some schools were worse than others, it totally happens.
I know this is one of people’s least favourite episode, but this episode ending was very “Goosebumps” which was popular kids spooky stories series back in the day.
7:55 "All I'm suggesting is that you recheck your figures and I think we'll find a grade more fitting to an athlete of Gage's stature." I'm trying very hard to not make a comparison to a phone call placed by a previous President to the State of Georgia's Secretary of State but I just couldn't. I'm sorry, I know that no reactor wants their comment section to become political but this was irresistible.
I saw more than my share of egotistic teachers, flaunting their little bit of power, using double standards for grading, humiliating students for their own pleasure. Sad really.
The fate of the coach was a bit unfortunate, r*ped to death by his own mutated team was pretty harsh, especially with the glib quip reaction from Buffy.

This is sadly an episode that for once does show this shows age in the worst way. The fact that not only did _no one_ react when Buffy was assaulted, no they victim blame her. And It is sort of played for laughs because Buffy can hold her own, but imagine it had been any other girl. Any Girl that didn't have superstrenght or that just behaved meek and held still, because that is still the default option that women often go to. He would have r***d her. In cold blood. This episode just makes me feel very, very icky. As a woman, it is really hard to see this kind of situation because _they happen_ . To you. And even when ppeople aren't as obviously misogynistic as the Coach, a lot of it is often still implied. It's just gross
Not sure how it shows its age in the worst way. The whole incident with Buffy being assaulted is shown in a very negative light on both the boy, the coach, the principal and her friends that don't take it for real. IMHO if anything it does take a stand against that kind of behaviour.
@@Henrik_Holst Yes and no. While the boys and the Coach are 'punished' at the end, this never happens from the standpoint of people in power. I know Snyder can be a dick, but I found him nearly out of Character tis episode. Usually he comes of as an equal opportunity asshole, but the blatant favouritism in this episode suggests otherwise. Neither he nor the Coach ever learn or _acknowledge_ that what they were doing might in any way be wrong. And that is what gets under my skin. The whole assault and 'dress less slutty' scene feels so... _trivial_ . Maybe it is just that, what bothered me. As someone who has experienced a similar situation, trivial is the last tone I would strike for that scene.
@@saiyasha848 I get what you write about the coach and Snyder not learning nor acknowledging anything from the incident but IMHO I don't see that as possible due to them both being assholes, the coach a misogenic (or how that would be spelled) asshole of that so them learning something here I think is completely out of the question, people like this cannot learn which is why they in the real world should be replaced (or cancelled as the SIC:s like to complain). For me the important thing is that the show shows that the behaviour of the coach and Snyder and the Scoobies are not right. Now I do agree that the Scoobies gets away far too easily by the fact that "dead guy with only his skin left" does take priority but this is the part that I take the most issue with. But that is all just my take on it, I'm under no intention to remove or lessen your take on this episode (Buffy in particular seems to be a very personal experience). I have no doubt that you experienced this kind of shitty behaviour, unfortunately they seem to happen just as often today as they did back then, and here one would assume that we would have evolved...
Here's yet another unpopular episode that I like. This episode certainly has its significant flaws... but I like the monsters... and I like the plot development of the swimmers becoming the monsters.
If this episode was in season 1, it would have been considered strong. But where it is--after the excellent "I Only Have Eyes for You" and before the big two-part season ender, it's just annoying.
Hey look! It’s the 144th-best ep of Buffy! Giving a click cause I like your reacts, but I can’t actually watch along for this POS. Looking forward to Becoming.
Oh Thor, I think it really whooshed right over your head on what Buffy meant that they "Really Love Their Coach" didn't it? Lol Yeah really don't love this episode, out of all of them it just made me highly uncomfortable with how sexist the episode was. I didn't like the aggressive nature of it especially teachers body shaming Buffy and the one guy sexualizing her. It seemed really unnecessary to the season and weird to place it right towards the end. This is usually an episode I skip on the regular.
I don't remember what I said, but there are SO many things I see myself miss while editing, so it doesn't surprise me haha... and I agree, the placement of this episode was a bit poor. I still liked it though :) Crazy coach and Cordelia were highlights for me
I can cope with asshole teachers and schoolmates shaming Buffy because it's In Character, but the fact *THE SCOOBIES* did it too was the thing that *REALLY* made me *FURIOUS!!!!!* 🤬💢🔥
I usually skip this one on rewatches, not because it's a weak episode, or more of a monster of the week, but the uncomfortable moments. And it's more the fact that the uncomfortable parts aren't the supernatural or fantasy oriented, but are all too real world. The guy basically ready to sexually assault a girl and her getting blamed and criticised. Just a bit too real world bad.
I love the reference to Lionel Richie's "Three Times a Lady".

That was absolutely a sincere moment from Cordelia.

25:33 - 25:40 An excellent theme for"Buffy"to _dive_ into...!😉🌊
I hope he keeps these videos coming, I can't wait to see him watch Snyder in "Band Candy" lol
So right & wrong at the same time
Hey look! It’s the 144th-best ep of Buffy!
Giving a click cause I like your reacts, but I can’t actually watch along for this POS. Looking forward to Becoming.
Much appreciated!!
Oh Thor, I think it really whooshed right over your head on what Buffy meant that they "Really Love Their Coach" didn't it? Lol
Yeah really don't love this episode, out of all of them it just made me highly uncomfortable with how sexist the episode was.
@@Logan_Baron True.
@@Logan_Baron Exactly, its just kind of disgusting and not necessary to be so boldly in your face.
This is one of my least favourite episodes of the entire show. Every time I do a rewatch I skip it
