  • Probably one of the biggest announcements in amusement park history, Cedar Fair and Six Flags have come to an agreement to merge their corporations into one massive Theme Park Enterprise. In this video, I discuss the good, bad and ugly of this daunting new endeavor.

    Is it just a coincidence or not that Kings Dominion got a Free Spin and Valleyfair got a Super Loop

    I think this will be a great move for both companies. We saw similar success in 2017 when Bass Pro Shops acquired Cabela's, so I see no reason why the same thing can't happen with these two as well.

    The rides Six Flags announced for 2024 will still continue, with Over Georgia themselves announcing an Ultra Surf coaster 11 days before the announcement video was released. It will likely impact the rides that people that are predicting for the parks to get in 2025

    Hopefully they will revamp the Safari section of Great Adventure. Finally seeing the launch track of King da ka. A new repaint for Kingda ka. (Maybe the reason there are new trains).

    There's no reason to raise season pass price.

    By the way, I would not take new rides or other recent investment as a sign that a park is necessarily safe. After mergers and acquisitions, companies often drop projects or properties that they've sunk a lot of recent money into. If they're rational, the reshuffled management is going to be reexamining everything to see whether it still makes financial sense, and recent sunk cost doesn't necessarily imply that they'll spare the axe. Remember Geauga Lake.

    Instead of six flags taking over the spotlight, why don’t they just called a new company Cedar Flags.

    One season pass for all the parks???? Dream on and hope it is affordable. I see the logic of offering several different price points of season passes and you get to pick 3 parks for X dollars or 4 parks for y dollars or 5 parks for z dollars. The GP basically doesn't travel the nation going to amusement parks, they stay within a 5 hour drive of home....so a full out season pass for all the parks is a long shot.

    The merger is about 95 complete. The board of directors for both Cedar fair and sf are in favor. Cf shareholders dont require to vote and most of the sharholders for sf are institutional shareholders not individuals which are mostly in favor. One particular shareholder is against the idea, however they dont hold enough shares to block the deal should they vote all their shares against the deal. Only thing that can block the deal are antitrust issues or if a competitor takes the them to court to block the deal if they think it is unfair for any reason.(dont be surprised if seaworld does this, given their recently shot down deal to acquire cf). I do see the ftc forcing to sell properties where there are duplicate parks in the same markets. I hope that though the parent company is called SF, that they treat the parks as different brands under the sf umbrella each with its distinctive experience, kindve like seaworld parks does with sea world and bush gardens. I have faith in Zimmerman. Hopefully this can course correct the last 25 years where sf was purchased by premier parks, which in hindsight was the worst thing that happened to sf as a whole.

    This move both excites and scares me immensely. I can’t help but think about what happened with both during the economic crash in the mid 2000s, but I know both companies are smarter than they were then.
    My home park is so obviously on its last legs, so that hurts, but I kinda saw this coming.

  • @zacg_

    My biggest concern is about selling off parks (especially if the land is turned into housing or retail developments instead of just changing ownership of the parks.) Most of the time mergers like this aren't done as a way to expand both companies. It is usually done when both companies feel that their future is rocky and they need to shed assets but are concerned they won't survive shedding those assets unless they establish a more stable base by merging.
    I just don't want to see any park closed. If a park gets bought by another chain or independent business entities that plan to continue to operate the park then that is fine. But some of those parks exist in areas where land is extremely valuable and a park sale could help stabilize the new company and the land would likely be developed. It nearly happened to Magic Mountain years ago.

    They said the CF parks will retain their names. It is the company, as a whole, that will be called Six Flags.
    I think this merger will generally be a good thing. I am hopeful that SF parks will get raised to the CF standard.
    I would feel better if Salim Basoul wasn’t going to be at the top of the pyramid. I am concerned he was only beginning to see the error of his ways.

    It's probably gonna end up like Busch Gardens and SeaWorld but better because back in the 90s SeaWorld and Busch Entertainment merged while keeping the both themed brand theme parks the Same. But hell we However, With Six Flags licensed by Warner Brothers and merging with Cedar Fair we might have back the Hanna-Barbera themed areas again in the former or Ex-Paramount parks while the kids areas will keep the Snoopy or Kids themed areas and the rest of that are under the Six Flags brand will still keep the Looney Tunes and DC Characters.

    This is a bad idea especially for Cedar Fair parks. Cedar Fair parks will go downhill. Season passes will be so expensive. We will not see any lg investments. Parks will be closed. People are going to lose their jobs. We will not have any competition. Won't see any record breaking coasters. Makes me very sad. Michigan Adventure and Valley Fair will be closed. Maybe Dorney as well.

    The superhero themes are a major hit with the public, even though enthusiasts tend to hate it. It draws people to Six Flags parks, so I could definitely see that being kept. I'm not a comic book guy at all, but I actually like the superhero themes at Six Flags parks. It's better than no theming at all, which is what Cedar Fair usually does, although they have improved on that lately. I could see the coaster for SFOG getting cancelled, since Cedar Fair refuses to work with Intamin. We probably also won't be seeing RMC Boss, RMC Roar, or a raptor for SFGAm.

    I do think that on the whole, this is probably a positive for shareholders and a negative for the rest of us-- I could see a whole bunch of underperforming parks sold off or shut down, since that's usually what happens after these mergers. Six Flags St. Louis, Six Flags America, Dorney Park, Darien Lake, Michigan's Adventure--even though some of them are getting new rides, the merger could kill some of them, if not now then a few years down the line. And it certainly removes all hope for California's Great America surviving the next few years.
    On the other hand: The only park owned by either company in my region is Six Flags New England, which is the 400-pound gorilla competing with smaller local parks like Lake Compounce, Water Country and Canobie Lake Park. I don't think the merger will affect it much, and any effect it does have may well be positive. It's already been slowly moving from low- to mid-tier status within the Six Flags chain. If anything, it's a scary moment for Lake Compounce, which will have to step it up if SFNE gets more investment from the merged company--especially as regards non-ride aspects like general ambiance and appearance, staffing, food etc.

    • @DuecePiece
      @DuecePiece 11 месяцев назад +1

      Here's hoping SFNE finally gets some love because that Goliath plot has looked pretty sad for a few years now. I really hope for the best, but fear it could be a terrible move down the road, I guess we'll all just have to wait and see.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 11 месяцев назад +1

      For years SFNE got some derision for having a regular Boomerang and a Giant Inverted Boomerang right next to each other. It occurs to me that the logical thing to do right now might be to rip out the Boomerang and replace them both with... a Super Boomerang! It'd fit, and it'd give SFNE its launch coaster. The only question is if they'd want to do something bigger and more custom instead, but now we're really dreaming.

    Knotts and six flags Magic mountain should both be safe as the company needs warm weather locations that open year round and both do good attendance numbers in arguably the biggest or second biggest US market.
    I can see parks like Darien lake and SF America sold off. Parks that are under performing or possibly hold an appeal to another chain. Frontier city to herschand maybe.
