2:36:40 Wanna expand on this bit since this is in my wheelhouse.
Ultimately this is an argument about Extrinsic Vs Intrinsic motivation. Pedagogical fields have been very concerned with this for a long time and the psychology is very well understood: people generally have a greater drive to do things, especially difficult things, when presented with intrinsic, rather than extrinsic, motivation. Translated, it means that we are much less motivated by external rewards or punishment than we are by the combined feelings of purpose, mastery, and autonomy.
Kids learn better when they understand why they're learning something and feel themselves improving, and workers work harder and happier when they see a point to their work and want to improve at it.

I do know people who enjoyed being waitstaff, but unless a chain restaurant had particularly good management it was mostly cafes and diners. They would go to work and chat with their regulars and such. It was still waitstaff work more pleasant for everyone.
I think in a post scarcity world most restaurants as we know them would either be pop-ups or small places where that's what the person wants to do. Waitstaff in this scenario would be more just general front-end help. I listed a bunch of stuff here, but the real point is that you could make it where only the necessary parts for each restaurant were there. If they decided they needed help in the Front someone could do that without making them do EVERYTHING which would make it horrible like it is now.
Gods this would be a better world. Making these positions only necessary when they are actually necessary and not devaluing anyone's contribution, because there are no small contributions, is just better the more I hear about it or think about it.

So Nat is obviously not the same kind of neurodivergent as me, so whenever she starts saying anything about supporting the stream my brain immediately plays the entirety of Sophie's spiel automatically and then is slightly unsettled when Nat doesn't use the same words.
