My aunt, who is trained in the classical Chinese arts, once told me that these performances were reserved for only the emperor or very important people. It was also only ever performed on special occasions so smiling no matter what the performance is to keep the entire thing refreshing to the eyes. It was also a way to show your beauty through your smile. Many concubines of the emperor have been selected this way too 😅. I'm not sure how accurate this is but I hope this clears up some questions you might have.

The fabric is light enough to waft in the air for a minute before settling down and heavy enough to be whipped around with a flick of the wrist to make those "smokey" shapes. It's all in the fabric :>
