- We will follow the narrow, steep and panoramic path that from the small port of Marina Piccola will lead us to the picturesque Poetto tower, located at the north end of the Sella del Diavolo.
We will skirt the military area for the first stretch, until the slope becomes important and the vegetation increasingly wild and before sections in the shade.
A few steps of wood, stone or simple beaten earth will help us in the short but steep climb, just 800 meters long.
We have not yet reached the top but we can already admire the small port of Marina Piccola and the first stops of the Poetto beach, already populated by the first bathers of the season. Behind it the salt pans, the Molentargius pond and in the distance some of the best known districts of Cagliari.
We go up again a few meters and the windy path will finally lead us to the dilapidated Poetto tower. The building is an integral part of the profile of the Sella del Diavolo, the most famous hill in Cagliari and which, being visible from every point of the Poetto beach, strongly characterizes it.
We will explore the tower, the pommel and the secret cave of the Devil's Saddle in the next videos, sign up to not miss them!
(Introduction by Roberto Bodano)
The tower, located 91 meters above sea level, is today in a state of ruin in a progressive phase of collapse.
It dominates the small port of Marina Piccola and the nearby Poetto beach and from it you can see the coastal towers of the Gulf of Cagliari, including that of Mezza Spiaggia and Isola dei Cavoli.
The tower of the Pouhet del San Elias, that is the Pozzetto di Sant’Elia, was so called due to its proximity to the Punic cistern known as "sa bucca de su tiaulu", or the devil's mouth.
In 1920 the name was mistakenly transformed first into the “Poet's tower” and then into “del Poetto”. The name of the large beach between Capo Sant’Elia and the Margine Rosso also derives from this last definition.
Built in the Giudicale period, it was also known as the Lantern tower as it served as a lighthouse in the Giudicato period itself, prior to the Aragonese and Spanish coastal tower system.
Near this tower, about 50 meters away, is the tower of Sant'Elia which, unlike that of Poetto, could watch over the small cove in which there are some caves that were an excellent hiding place for small boats of the raiders of turn.
The Benedictine monastery of Sant’Elia de Portu Salis was built near the tower in the Middle Ages.
In 1638 the Fort of Cala Mosca was built, which in fact made the Poetto Tower superfluous, causing its abandonment in the years immediately following.
Although in 1720 the Piedmontese engineers found it in ruins, it was however rearmed during the French attack of 1792-1793 only to be finally abandoned.
Other information
Usability of the property: almost non-existent and in serious safety conditions given the precarious conditions of the two remains of ruin in addition to the location, in a hilly area with a strong slope and with landslide.
Accessibility of the area: poor and dangerous.
Driveway: accessible from two points with a car stop in Marina Piccola at about 700 meters from the Tower or from Cala Fighera at about 900 m.
Pedestrian: difficult due to temporary unavailability of the site. Impervious due to the specific orographic characteristics of the site, in addition to the overhang on the sea.
Passing through the small port of Marina Piccola, it is necessary to climb the ridge for a journey from the stopping point of about 60 minutes. Or, stopping by car in Cala Fighera, you can follow an equally steep path for about 40 minutes.
The tower falls into an area with military servants manned by guards, it is therefore advisable to inform the COMAR of Cagliari.
Panoramic: excellent for a 360 ° range of vision.
Visible towers: all the towers of the eastern part of the Gulf of Cagliari, from that of Isola dei Cavoli to the Spanish one of Mezza Spiaggia in the center of Poetto.
