    The speed of light is often cited as the fastest anything can travel in our universe. While this might be true, the speed of light is the EFFECT and not the CAUSE of this phenomenon. So what's the cause? On this week's episode of Space Time, Matt helps explain what the speed of light REALLY is and why it’s the cosmic speed limit of our universe!

      Not that it matters one way or the other, but are you a gay man by chance? I can't picture a woman using the phrase "wide, athletic stance," because it's something a PE coach (or gay man) would say to describe another man's pose.
      But you're totally right in that observation - and now I can't not notice how wide his stance is. He looks like he's getting ready to drop a duke in a port-o-pottie.

      Whats Up If i recall correctly from my recollection of useless knowledge. When talking about the act of smelling, like a fart, were talking about the nerves in our nose is picking up particles attached to air molecules. In other words, we're smelling the air, which is not massless and travels at the speed of sound at sea level. If something requires a medium to reach you (ie smell and sound), then you already know it can't travel at light speed. And air molecules (doesn't travel in a straight line) bounces around other molecules before the scent travels to your nose, which is why there's a time delay between gas leaving underwear and you smelling a$$.
      Someone please correct me if I remember / described anything wrong.

      @@idontwantahandlethough THE MATHEMATICAL AND PHYSICAL PROOF THAT E=MC2 IS DIMENSIONALLY CONSISTENT WITH ONE AND WHAT IS A TWO DIMENSIONAL SURFACE OR SPACE ON BALANCE, THEREBY PROVING THAT ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY PROVEN TO BE GRAVITY (ON/IN BALANCE):
      This also clearly proves ON balance that E=mc2 is directly taken from F=ma. Magnificent.
      Gravity is a property of SPACE ON BALANCE. It involves adherence or cohesion. So, BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE is fundamental ON BALANCE. Accordingly, ON BALANCE, TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual ON/IN BALANCE. Consider what is the man who IS standing on what is THE EARTH/ground (ON BALANCE). What is the blue sky ON BALANCE? This IS the blue EARTH AS this is expressed on balance WITH (or equivalently by) what is the eye. The translucent AND blue sky is consistent with what is BALANCED BODILY/VISUAL (AND electromagnetic/gravitational) EXPERIENCE ON BALANCE, as touch AND feeling BLEND; as ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY (AND necessarily) proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE). GREAT. The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky ON BALANCE, AND consider what is the speed of light (c) ON BALANCE !! Consider TIME (AND time dilation) ON BALANCE. E=mc2 IS F=ma ON BALANCE, AS the rotation of WHAT IS THE MOON matches it's revolution; as ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY (AND necessarily) proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE). The tides are CLEARLY and necessarily proven to be electroMAGNETIC/gravitational ON BALANCE. I have also CLEARLY explained (ON BALANCE) why THE PLANETS move away very, very, very, very slightly in relation to WHAT IS THE SUN !! I have explained why WHAT IS THE EYE beholds what is then (ON BALANCE) WHAT IS THE BLUE EARTH. Notice the associated black “space” AND DOME regarding what is the eye. Again, the stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky ON BALANCE. ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE). Very carefully consider what is THE SUN ON BALANCE !! E=mc2 IS F=ma. Again, I have proven AND explained why the rotation of WHAT IS THE MOON matches it's revolution.
      Gravity cannot be shielded (or blocked) ON BALANCE. What is quantum gravity is CLEARLY fundamental ON BALANCE. Gravity is CLEARLY fundamental ON BALANCE. BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE is fundamental ON BALANCE.
      Define “mass". You cannot. BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE is fundamental.
      E=mc2 is taken directly from F=ma. CLEARLY, gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy are linked AND BALANCED opposites (ON BALANCE); as the stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky !! Consider TIME (AND time dilation) ON BALANCE. GREAT.
      You have to CLEARLY AND fully understand what E=mc2 means and represents ON BALANCE.
      We want to understand the dimensions in a seamless (or balanced) fashion in relation to gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy (including what is E=mc2). Consider one AND three dimensional SPACE ON BALANCE. Consider what is the fourth dimension ON BALANCE. NOW, consider all of the following.
      Consider what is E=mc2. CLEARLY, you have to understand what is a TWO dimensional surface OR SPACE ON BALANCE. c squared CLEARLY represents BALANCED acceleration in conjunction WITH what is NECESSARILY a dimension of SPACE ON BALANCE. The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky ON BALANCE, AND consider what is the speed of light (c) ON BALANCE. This CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY represents, INVOLVES, AND DESCRIBES what is possible/potential AND actual ON/IN BALANCE. Carefully consider what is THE EYE ON BALANCE. Great. Consider what is gravity AND E=mc2 ON BALANCE.
      TIME dilation ULTIMATELY proves (ON BALANCE) that ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity, AS E=MC2 is CLEARLY F=ma ON BALANCE. Gravity/acceleration involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity; AS E=MC2 is CLEARLY F=ma ON BALANCE; AS the stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. Accordingly, ON BALANCE, the rotation of WHAT IS THE MOON matches it's revolution. TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity; AS E=MC2 is CLEARLY F=ma ON BALANCE. The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. Accordingly, ON BALANCE, it makes perfect sense that THE PLANETS (including WHAT IS THE EARTH) will move away very, very, very slightly in relation to what is THE SUN !!! ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity, AS E=MC2 is CLEARLY F=ma ON BALANCE. Inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE is proportional to (or BALANCED with/as) GRAVITATIONAL force/ENERGY, as this balances gravity AND inertia; AS E=MC2 is CLEARLY F=ma ON BALANCE; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. GREAT.

      I came to this realization from thinking about how a video game is made. The programmer is God and maybe aka the Universe. The light you see is the End Result of the Video game. But the hardware and code behind the scenes must make that light must move faster than light or before the light moves. In fact, they have measured some sort of weird delay between what actually happens and what you see. speed of light is made up bs , for example lets say thers no living being that have eyes that can look the light , lets say when u turn on a light the light doesnt move , all the area that is being iluminated by the light is the area where the light source has enough power to reach the more powerful the light the larger the area it will iluminate and be seen in case thers eyes to look at that light , this is why u point a laser in one direction lets say u point it forward but someone who is in back direction will still see the light

      Society of Physics Students -- UCLA has now given the following writing the thumbs up on their page:
      THE TRUE AND THE ULTIMATE UNIFICATION OF PHYSICS/PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE IS NOW MATHEMATICALLY PROVEN:
      Gravity/acceleration involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL resistance, AS E=mc2 IS F=ma. ACCORDINGLY, the rotation of WHAT IS THE MOON matches it's revolution. This explains why objects fall at the SAME RATE (neglecting air resistance, of course), AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. "Mass"/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. E=mc2 IS F=ma. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY are linked AND BALANCED opposites, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. This NECESSARILY represents, INVOLVES, AND DESCRIBES what is possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE. INDEED, time DILATION proves that electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY; AS E=mc2 is DIRECTLY and fundamentally derived from F=ma. "Mass"/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Ultimately and truly, time is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. E=mc2 IS F=ma. This CLEARLY and truly explains c4 from Einstein's equations. THE FOURTH DIMENSION IS THUS CLEAR, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. BALANCE and completeness go hand in hand. I have mathematically unified physics/physical experience. The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. A PHOTON may be placed at the center of what is THE SUN (as A POINT, of course), AS the reduction of SPACE is offset by (or BALANCED with) the speed of light; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. It all CLEARLY makes perfect sense. E=mc2 IS F=ma. Time DILATION proves that electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY, AS E=mc2 IS F=ma. GREAT !!! IT IS CLEARLY PROVEN. INSTANTANEITY is thus CLEARLY FUNDAMENTAL to what is the FULL and proper understanding of physics/physical experience. (Very importantly, outer "space" involves full inertia; AND it is fully invisible AND black.)

    Question- some galaxies are so far away from us that even at the speed of light we could never get to them. If the speed of light is actually the speed limit of causality in the Universe rather than just a speed limit, then how could galaxies this far away possibly have any gravitational effect on us since we are moving apart faster that the speed of causality could reach us?

      While today they are too far away for new information to reach us, the gravitational effect information of today left long ago when we were still reachable, it just took until now to reach us. While there is the gravitational effect of the past versions of those galaxies, there will never be such a gravitational effect from those galaxies as they actuallly are right now. Just like we see them now the way they were long ago, but will never see them the way they actually are right now.

      Nocturno: Sure it did, but rationally. "Everything" covers a lot of ground and the size of the ground it covers is increasing in harmony with The Law of Entropy in which "entropy is disorder". The Law states that the total amount of disorder in the universe is increasing at the expense of order.
      Substitute "CONfusion" for disorder and "Fusion" for order and what do you have? Well, my interpretation is that the amount of CONfusión is increasing at the expense if fusion (CON meaning against and fusion meaning the coming together of- such as in a thermoFUSION atomic bomb as opposed to the fission bomb).
      Does that make it less complicated to you?
      It did and does make it analogously easier/simpler for my little brain.

      The monkey and the pony are the reason why.
      Its a linear attempt to hint at the fact that 'we' don't know what speed we are traveling at.
      Nothing in the universe is linear. There are no straight lines in physics.
      The earth (monkey) is rotating around itself = surface velocity.
      The earth (monkey) is rotating around the sun (pony) = + oscillating surface velocity 1.
      The sun (pony) is rotating in the milky way = + oscillating surface velocity 2
      The sun (pony) is rotating around the milky way = + oscillating surface velocity 3.
      The milky way might be rotating around another galaxy ... galaxies = + oscillating surface velocities n.
      Everything rotates around the centre of the universe.
      We don't know where the centre of the universe is ... therefore we have no idea at what nonlinear (oscillating) velocity we are traveling.
      We don't know where the famous location of the neutral 'observer' is ...the centre of the universe.
      All we can conclude is - if velocity/space/time are related - time itself can't be constant or linear.
      We basically know nothing.
      The 'Observer' however at the centre of the universe can call himself God, because by adjusting his position he can travel through time and space ... history and future at will.

    • @merinsan
      @merinsan 9 лет назад +60

      +omegadan Gravity is not real - I think there was a video on this channel about that. Gravity is the curvature of spacetime, and light (ie massless particle) simply travels in a straight line, which appears curved when you have a curved spacetime.

    • @LectiOpi
      @LectiOpi 9 лет назад +1

      +omegadan As explained in an earlier SpaceTime video, gravity is not a force, but an effect of curved spacetime. Earth doesn't "pull" things toward it, all objects move in such a way as to make it seem like it does.
      Just like a tennis ball would follow the same curved pathway as a bowling ball would, massless particles follow the same "pathway of gravity" as particles with mass.

    • @DFPercush
      @DFPercush 9 лет назад +1

      +omegadan In a certain sense, you can also think of it as a massive particle moving at the true speed of light. It will experience acceleration toward the gravitating body the same as a massive particle, and its path will be deflected as if it's a space probe whizzing by the planet/star/galaxy. You can do the classic "elevator thought experiment" where you have an elevator that is accelerating upwards, and a beam of light is emitted from one side horizontally to the other side. Because it takes time for the light to travel, the elevator will have accelerated past that point when it gets to the other side, and from the reference frame of someone in the elevator (accelerating frame), the beam will appear to curve down, like water out of a hose.

    Question on one way light speed:
    1. Can you take electron A and electron B and entangled them and separated them by a logical quantified distance that would allow for a very accurately measured speed of light.
    2. located a light source at electron A.
    3. Locate a timer and light sensor at electron B
    4. used triggered change in electron A to simultaneously (or infinitely close), initiate the light source as well as the simultaneous change in electron B, and simultaneously (or infinitely close), use the change in electron B to start the timer, and when the light source hits the light sensor use the sensor to simultaneously(or infinitely close), stop the timer.
    5. Then take the clock time and subtract the near simultaneous trigger time from electron A to the light source, and the near simultaneous trigger time from electron B to the timer, and the near simultaneous trigger time from the sensor stopping the timer, and thereby calculate one way speed of light across a quantified distance.
    Would this work to measure the one way speed of light and could this time be used to better identify the speed of the second leg of the two way light speed measurement?

    Another spectacular episode. This is quickly becoming my favorite channel on youtube. I was (and of course still am) sad to see Gabe leave, but it is beyond obvious we're in good hands with Matt. MY love for this show has not waned one bit, Matt is knocking it out of the park each time, which honestly I did not think anyone who is not Gabe could do this well with this format. I was wrong, and I am very happy for it.
    The community is also still pretty much the best damn community on youtube. Especially with boss people like Gareth and mage davee, and a ton of other crazy smart and helpful people answering all the questions that are given to to them. Add to that the continued and frequent contributions from people working on the show itself, and this is quickly becoming a community you can't help but be proud of, and make you want to participate in.

    Special Relativity implies everything travels through 4-dimensional Minkowski spacetime at speed c, the same speed that light travels through 3-dimensional space (in a vacuum). The actual equation is: From the perpective of an inertial observer, the square of something's speed through 3d space plus the square of its rate of aging equals c squared. It implies anything that ages at a nonzero real rate must travel slower than c through 3d space, and it implies anything traveling at speed c through 3d space does not age. It sure looks like a fundamental law, from which Special Relativity and the Lorentz transformation could be derived. An open question is whether it's physically possible for something to age at an imaginary rate (the square root of a negative number) because, if so, the equation would allow faster-than-light travel through 3d space.

    It's pretty enormous that c= the "speed of causality" and not merely the 'speed of light'; this is something so fundamental and intrinsic to even understanding the EXPLANATION of all other concepts, that I am genuinely behooved that it isn't immediately foregrounded and demystified in any of the other basic introductions to astrophysics. (Including this series - but kudos for finally getting there.)
    Hundreds of hours of videos purporting to "explain" astrophysics, and to date, this is the first one which finally desubstantializes the hypostasis of "light-as-a-thing" against which all is measured, or worse still, the (ab)using of the term "photon" as shorthand for that speed, or its us a metaphor for causality of all other forces.
    It's amazing, really, the arrogance that physics has in assuming this is either known, assumed, or expected of anyone when it proclaims eg continental philosophy to be opaque.

    fun fact:
    time slows down when an object approaches the speed of light. time stops when you are at the speed of light (although no particle with actual mass can reach it).
    that means even though from our perspective it takes sunlight 8min to reach earth, to the individual photons themselves, no matter how far they are, they are always annihilated the very moment they are created because there's literally *no time* for them to exist. trippy shit eh?

    • @nickpatella1525

      so from their reference frame, nothing exists :O

    • @Ballacha
      @Ballacha 6 лет назад +18

      Nick Patella if you define "exist" as the time in between creation and annihilation, then no, they don't exist at all from their own perspective. from our perspective (or the perspective of any 3-dimensional being) however, they exist. both conclusions are valid. and this fact also accidentally fits photons' behaviour described by quantum mechanics - they can simultaneously be in two completely opposite/mutually exclusive states.

      Yeah, that was my understanding of the speed of light, you add velocities but they only work up to a point because as you reach the speed of light, the time-space transforms and therefore in relation to the target where the light shines the speed doesn't change, but I kind of like his no velocity theory too, never hear of it, but it does make sense to me. What do you think?
