Take this one step further and grip the club like a sledge hammer... 10 fingers and right hand has the club in the meat of the hand (Go look at Moe Norman's grip). Feel like you are hitting a wall with a sledge hammer and drive the right hand like you would a sledge hammer. I started this back a few months ago and I can't miss a fairway anymore and have gained crazy yards with every club.
Norm - can you please explain your grip a bit more? I'm intrigued. I didn't realize Moe held his in the right hand that way. Is your grip more of a ten finger grip or a baseball grip with both thumbs wrapped around the club? Thx in advance.
simply the Heard Simple Swing that Jerry Heard sold years ago, and yes it works best with wedges and short iron up to 7 iron.....as clubs get longer the grip will cause you to loose some loft so you have to adjust a bit for that as you will hit more line drives then fly balls, really tuff on the 3 wood off the ground as you go from 15 to about 11 degrees of loft..
Seems like you're right recommending a strong grip where should the v of the right and left hand point outside the right shoulder also you say that siideband squares the clubface how much sidemen should I have thanks for your help Jack
OK, this actually works. I am 60 years and hit the ball fairly far (240-260 yards), which is fine for most courses, but I thought I would try this closed face drill. Well, it worked!! I probably went 10-20 yards further. I still need to practice it a few more times to be sure to keep the swing. But here's my question, will this closed face/tilt/square up swing for irons, or just too hard to hit it accurately this way? Also, fairway woods off the deck, or is this best off a tee only? Thanks for your help. Love your vids
From the Matrix:AGENT SMITH Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? Agent Smith grabs Neo in a choke-hold forcing him to look down the tracks, the train's headlight burning a hole in the darkness. AGENT SMITH That is the sound of inevitability. =============== Welcome to Shawn's Matrix: Hear the sound of that? That is the sound of COMPRESSION! Indeed! Thanks Shawn. Your lessons are doing nothing less than opening our eyes and making this great game so much more fun. This is an awesome lesson/vid...perhaps the most important other than grip and basic set up. Thank you.
Well, nothing is going to matter if the face doesn't meet the ball square. The strong grip Shawn suggests, IMO, is what does that so not only do you get the power behind the strike but the face comes in at the correct angle. Unfortunately, this doesn't help if you insist on releasing the trail wrist before the club gets to the ball, you'll drive the club into the dirt. For my money Shawn's recent tip about lag; i.e. using the lead arm to drive the club head through the ball, is the key to getting a clean strike. It's not as easy to do as it looks, but it can work. Once you've trained your trail arm to behave THEN you can focus on the right arms/hand configuration to get maximum force (a la Pete Cowen's axe drill).
Hi shawn. I'm a big fan of yours of late. You have taught me how to strike the ball better and how to use task based thinking to PLAY golf, and not think too much about positions. I tried your various power moves, using the legs, the hips, slightly firmer grip... I'm considering to get the Superspeed clubs to increase club head speed. In your opinion, because it uses lighter weight clubs to train the body for over speed, do you think that works against your gravity way of hitting? I know you said you prefer heavier clubs cos then you can feel the weight of the clubs and use gravity to move. Your thoughts??? Thanks. Dan
Hi Shawn love all your videos; but being someone who would not chose a strong grip for myself I think my feel may be differently then your’s. Would it not? You say no to the flipping trail hand that causes the head of the club or iron head to scoop up the ball. And you’re right if the flipping of the hands takes place at the impact zone. I still love my neutral grip and so does David Duval and so we see it differently and might disagree with you since when we start the hammer move with the flip motion of our trail hand; it is at the top of our down swing; not the bottom of the swing. The head of our club then immediately lags behind our fast hands, bowing our lead wrist, creating thé perfect impact zone strike scenario of the big blur we see between our ears. We remain in our golf posture until the momentum of the club head takes over our hands at the end of the big blur 4 inch impact zone. This way we don’t get the head of the club pulling on both our shoulders. Personally I do not like that feeling of tossing the club away at all. Just saying. Cheers
confusing. when you hammer down with a driver you hit it with the sole and not the face. so if the hammer were the club what would be your set-up position with the hammer?
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf true. if i use a hammer, there is no rotation of the hammer in that the hammer face always faces the direction of the hit/nail head. if i have a club in my hand, at set up i need to have a very strong grip so i would impact the ball with the club face similar to a hammer unless you mean i need to feel like hitting/hammer the ball with the hosel/heel part and rotate the club at the right instant to hit the ball with the club face.
how about some pov instruction, let us see and feel what you see in a pov, from ball position, shaft , club head etc , target line, reference points and target area
Remember that club path is never straight. It is always on the arc or hula hoop around your body. You are just trying to catch the ball at the right moment along that path.
So I tried this and I just can't for the life of me square the club. I Got club head speed up to 116 but my face is wide open. Do you have a video to maybe put this all together and maybe square the face?
Probably hit it 20 yards ;-) Yeah, this is good, but he is a 'hitter' not a 'swinger'. I would look at both and then decide. A hitter hits with his right hand {hammer time}- pushing it through. A swinger pulls with his left hand - pulling the handle. I prefer the swinger. Just my 2 cents.
One of the best pieces of imagery for teaching. Great stuff. Only wish this stuff came to when I was younger.

Norm Petroff I totally agree this method is uncomplicated and powerful
Man that is a good golf swing,I am still trying, thanks Shawn.

Gave you thumbs up just for your pure passion, my friend. Can't wait to try this next year.

Good stuff

Norman Kleinberg great comments and very well said. The axe drill is great and we have a video with Shawn releasing next week on it
Do you have a link to that video?

This is great. It’s funny I don’t flip as much when I go stronger and do the hammer motion.
That's the idea!

It’s not a precise equation but to help visualize. And the hammer is aligned down the line

When I release to the target I block it help :(
James Tonks you are holding off too much. Let the arms flow more. Ensure you are clearing your body out of the way to let arms fall

Have you tried changing your grip? I was pushing until I realized my grip was a little off. Now, I'm trying to fix a pull. Lol
Yeah. You can play a silly strong grip with this imagery. I do.
