Sadly, there's nothing cute about animals trapped in aquariums and zoos. These poor little guys are so void of natural stimulation, that a butterfly, is the closest thing to life outside of this hell-hole must be such a breath of fresh air for them. Maybe they are following him to find a way out! Maybe they're trying to figure out how they can fly and be free like him. This is really sad, please don't take your kids to these places unless they're holding a boycott sign. Let's end animal slavery once and for all, respect for all life, we do not own them!
Your heart is in the right place, but that actually looks like a great penguin habitat, compared to some of the others I've seen. They have a fair amount of room an open-air environment with water. In the wild, penguins are either together in packed colonies or foraging for fish in the open ocean (provided in this captive setting so they don't have to spend energy looking for food). While my experience with this zoo is limited, most penguins are well-cared for by people who, like yourself, are interested in their welfare.
hydnsk998 My heart will always speak out for animals, and in this case no amount of room can compare to being free. Penguins in the wild, normally have to leave their breeding colony and travel quite far to find food. That’s something that zoos have so far not incorporated into the design of penguin enclosures. So they become bored and suffer similar psychosis as other trapped animals do. As a vegan, there is no argument that will ever convince me that zoos, aquariums, circuses etc are good for animals. If they are bordering on extinction then put them in a sanctuary, if they are sick, bring them back to health and if possible reintroduce back to their natural habitat or again, a sanctuary. Animals in these unfortunate circumstances are for one thing only, profit. They are held hostages while greedy humans become rich off exploiting them to the ignorant masses who should know better by now, or if they do, just don't give a damn about animals. Animals in captivity have life spans that are shortened considerably no matter how well taken care of they appear to be, they are viewed as dispensable, when one dies, "oh well, let's just go out and steal a few more away from their intricate societies and natural world. We are the most disgusting species, we think we own everything, we think because we can speak that makes us superior. While animals like dolphins, apes, pigs, even honeybees, have highly developed forms of communication and evolved societies that have been here long before man appeared on the planet. We at least owe them their freedom, they are sentient beings like ourselves capable of emotions like fear, pain, joy, sadness, why are most of us to selfish to see this?
iamsecond I would disagree with quite a few of your statements. It's true that animals become bored from not having to find food or mates on their own. This is why many zoos have active enrichment programs; by providing novel food-related or sensory experiences, or giving them the chance to practice behaviors they would do in the wild (such as gathering nest material) they aim to keep their minds active to prevent the psychosis you speak of. Many sanctuaries sound great on paper and have great staff, but lack the funding to provide enrichment and medical care (having worked at a few myself, I speak from experience). There are a lot of nonprofit zoos out there as well that focus not on turning a buck (even if zoos started out that way) but on educating people. As Baba Dioum said, "'In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we have been taught.'" This is the goal of the modern zoo. It's unfortunate that other zoos as well as circuses undermine these goals, and I agree with you, they are both irresponsible and reprehensible. But don't lump everything together in one Barnum and Bailey basket. In the case of quite a few species, their lifespans are greatly enhanced due to medical care and lack of predators; I've cared for a 50-year-old crane that would have lived half as long, for example. Again, there are quite a few irresponsible places that take animals out of the wild as you say, and I agree, they should be stopped. Today, however, proper facilities strive to only have animals descended from captive populations. It's unfortunate to me that we'll never see eye-to-eye, but I respect your opinion and idealism.
I appreciate your comments and completely respect your point of view,we can agree to disagree. As an animal rights advocate I've seen way too much of the bad over the good, not to say there isn't any good out there. I know plenty of animal rescuers and people doing amazing things for animals, but palces like Marineland etc, they need to be shutdown. I urge you to watch Blackfish if you haven't already. Have a goodnight.
Brenda Vee They probably have a much larger habitat outside of the field of view, through a passage underneath the water. Most Zoos have that - there's usually only a very small viewing area for animals like penguins, to minimize their exposure to humans. It would be too inhumane to put penguins in such a small container. Besides, a small perch of land with extensive underground, leading to nesting sites, etc. would be more natural anyway. Try to use your brain, please.
