    Thanks for this discussion, it's a great topic:
    Once you get into a bad situation with your finance it should teach you a lesson, otherwise you have the addiction problem and you need help. You can see this happening regularly in Statue & Comic FB groups but no one admits to the addiction with their large purchases. A lot of folks get caught up either showing off or justifying their excitement from like minded people.
    In my experience I can say there is nothing I own that has truly kept me consistently happy in the past 20+ years of collecting. You still come back to square one, wanting more to feed your high. Appreciate your backlog and stop caring about FOMO because none of it really matters. You'll save money also.

    My Fomo isnt so much an anxious/giddy thing, it is but its more I see something I like and I'm 100% sure I'm gonna get it just not right now and then it goes OOP, Marvel releases stuff and it seems like it goes OOP the same year it was released so its more a fear of missed out, past tense, like Damn, I missed out. Idk if this will help you guys but a resolution I gave myself this year is buy less than 50 books, not FOMO related, just I have tons of books I havent read yet and I'm still buying. I've found this instantly helped because now I'm still doing the same thing I always did, going online looking at tons of books but then when it comes time to click buy, I always get nervous because I know I only have a limited number of books to buy so I gotta make my choices count. I'm really set in doing this, maybe making it a resolution helps because as soon as you tell people they're always watching out for you, for better or worse. I may have a real battle later this year if I buy 50 books before years end but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
    Also first and only purchase so far this year is the Spider-man epic collection:Maximum Carnage,pre-ordered, it'll be my first time reading it. Thanks for heads-up on that one Omar.

    This show helps me make informed purchases, so I can focus my budget on getting things I want asap before the chance of missing out. Having a book go out of print that you want and could have gotten is the worst.

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  4 года назад

      John, I'm so glad to hear that! When possible, I like to watch reviews on things too, just to make sure. Especially statues. But then lately, I've been checking out more books from the library to really check on whether the book is something I want to purchase and have forever. Still supporting the industry but in a way that saves me money!

  • @radiak55

    My golden rule is to always buy lower than the retail price. By default, I end up waiting out on a lot of stuff that even though it may take even years, I have great savings and have other stuff to keep me busy on the wait.
    I also buy when it is on specific points of the year like holiday sales etc because I can buy in bulk what I like and have saved a lot to then buy the other stuff I don't want to miss out on.
    I also recommend collectors to wage what they collect and research what is the most expensive out of the baseline, what comes the most frequent and what you collect the most out of your main things. Like this, I have been able to save money to buy more high end collectible figures like the Saint Seiya Myth Cloth figures from Bandai as I also collect comic art prints, Koto Bishoujo figures and comic book collected editions.

  • @frasert8779
    @frasert8779 4 года назад +1

    It’s also interesting/difficult because when you DO buy something that’s limited edition etc, you don’t pay attention as much as to how coveted it becomes. When you don’t buy it then you are painfully aware of how unattainable it is... So the cases where you buy seem like they are not as worth it but it’s a trick!!! But anyway... I always do the Cart/Wish List constant reversal method and it works at least some of the time 😂

  • @hydra66

    I've got a rule of waiting 48hrs or so before jumping on anything more expensive than $75 or so. Before then, too many impulse purchases cluttering the shelves that I regret.
    As for artificial scarcity and scalpers - f**k that. If the product's worth buying, it'll still be on sale at retail a few weeks down the line. If it sells out rapidly, that should be a prompt to print more

    Yeah, I have a friend who always encourages me to jump on a comic book or movie or book every time we go out. Luckily I have a tip to counter this urge. I don't have a credit card, and I only take a small amount of cash with me whenever I go shopping. I also don't shop online for things very often. 2017 was a bad year for me in that regard though. This was a great video! I do have a fear of missing out all the time. This is something I struggled with over last summer and changed my ways in the fall. Maddie and Omar are correct being part of a collector’s group is harsh. As you can really fall into the hype and then you’re left thinking, why did I buy this? So I’ve gone the route of Rob/Tina and I just say to myself “What is the end game with this item? Will I truly like it? Do I really need it in that special format? Or do I just want to watch/read/own it in a different format?” Tina raises a good point too. I have a budget I give myself and “Which item stretches my dollar the most?” I bought wireless headphones Black Friday instead of Link’s awakening and omnibus as the Headphones will get used every day listening to music at work or doing choirs. But the games and books are a one time thing and can wait for another day.
    For myself I’ve found ranking things I want is what helps. I make a list of all the things coming out within the next year or so and rank or group item, (eg. Love of the title/show + happiness it brings + possibility of it going OOP = S-Rank. ). For grouping items it’s usually a book or anime title I like but don’t love and I’ll buy it if there’s a big sale like a 2 for 3 deal. I find doing this puts everything into perspective and you’re putting your dollars with what you want and are buying less on impulse. Channels with reviews and previews like yours really help figuring out if it’s worth it.
    Anyway thanks so much it’s good to know I’m not alone in all this too!

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  4 года назад

      That's a very smart approach. I prefer to sit on things and really think on them for awhile first before purchasing. But I will say that sometimes my impulsivity gets in the way! - M

  • @frasert8779
    @frasert8779 4 года назад +1

    I agree with much of what Tina said about her strategies etc, except my fiancé is in medical school and I’m a full time student who also works so I am forced to find techniques due to limited funds lol. I think that is the real trick, you developed the ways of dealing with it when you can’t financially sustain it, and hopefully keep those tactics when you make more money later. But I will also say that I am constantly on eBay and I bid on hundreds of listings and will eventually get something for like 80% off. I just got both the Avengers Omnibuses by Busiek and Perez for 30% less than cover!

  • @augustarpg8035
    @augustarpg8035 4 года назад +1

    I have a list that I keep with all the things I want, I have it organized based on how much I want the item. If its the last book in a set Im already collecting, that goes a little higher on the list. If its a videogame, eh, I could always wait for a digital sale. And it does hurt in a weird way everytime a book or something goes out of print, cause it is a real case of missing out on sonething.

    I'm not a big omnibus collector, but I'm like this now that DC is cancelling them left and right and hasn't reprinted some in a while, that I'm afraid of missing out on that run being collected like that.
    Same with some Marvel Omnibuses that I know come and disappear just as fast, especially if they are one complete story.
    Like Uncanny X-Force finally getting a reprint, but I don't know how long it'll be around or if I'll have the funds for it.
    Same with Gail Simone's Wonder Woman omnibus. I've been dying to have that run collected again, considering the trades are even hard to find, and I'm nervous on missing out on it because I don't know if DC would even reprint after release.

    FOMO gets me, but it's more in the sense of missing the best price on a book. Release week is the lowest price. Buy it now, when I maybe I shouldn't, or wait and pay more later.
    I have been caught in the hype and bought stuff I regret.
    The one thing that saves me is Hoopla since I'm more concerned with having read something hyped vs owning it.
