Ritchie was special. I love Iommi. Hendrix, Beck and many more but Ritchie had something special. When he's on fire, no one can touch him but when he's on a bad day..oh man, 😭😭
One of reasons why Ritchie is one of best guitarists of all times, just like great Jimi Hendrix, is unique sound. You just hear the sound of guitar and you know who it is. Btw, both of them had amazing sound, Fender and Marshall, and that is. Just great. Cheers from Serbia!
I was there !! what a fantastic one day concert at the former Ontario Motor Speedway. Tens of thousands attended. Was able to get not too far from the stage. The had a few towers set up with tens of speakers. The sound was great. DP was not the closing band, it was Emerson Lake Palmer, who in my opinion were louder than DP. Hard to believe ! Perhaps after several hours of the best rock, and the air filled with pot smoke.. .hahaha.. my earring became super sensitive. Blackmore played brilliantly, while destroying a few Strats and Marshall cabs. Great classic rock tone. Unforgettable concert. I've seen quite a few famous rock bands since, but none came close to DP at the Cal Jam.
Actually DP were the co-headliners however they chose to be the second last band but to go on but only after the sun went down. Their choice since they were the biggest selling band in the world at the time.
I'm 76-years old, so all I could think about is how much their INSURANCE BILL must have been!! The crowd certainly got their money's worth that night. Having grown up with The Who, and Jeff, and Jimi, I could easily see their influence in everything Blackmore does, and he somehow managed to squeeze all of those showy elements into this single performance like a madman bent on total destruction at all costs, yet in such a creative way. But while he was creating absolute mayhem, I was just as blown away by the second guitar player's licks keeping the whole thing together, while the driving bass line and powerful drumming sounded like some kind of runaway freight train raging through the night with a maniac at the throttle. What a wild ride...
@@ThinPicks You're kidding!! All this time I could have sworn I heard another guitar keeping the groove going, and all the more reason to revere this great band. When I was still playing, keyboard players were worth their weight in gold for that "fat" sound they could help create. If you were any good you'd never be out of work for this precise reason. Thanks for this...

5:09 At least here we see that Ritchie Blackmore throws his Destroyed Guitar to the entire audience like Ozzy Osborne did with his T-shirt 🎸💥💫🎸💥💫🎸💥💫🎸💥💫🎸💥💫🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
There was a chain link fence about the front stage I was center 10 ft from the chain link fence 12 hours of show Ontario speedway racetrack the coolest part about the show was Emerson lake and Palmer quadraphonics sound system. We came down from Lancaster California. Has anybody ever mentioned the water bottle scene and the fire hose scene. It was cool. 🥁😎👍
I think Ritichie's whole schtick for years has been "there's nothing I do that's remotely as crazy as the culture." he's actually fairly calm. notice when he destroyed - for the then - HUGE price o' 10K - a network TV camera, he was at GREAT pains to not injure the cameraman. Ritchie's a cool guy and if my bladder could hold it, I'd have some beers with him. Interesting cat.
There’s only one Ritchie... where’s Yngwie Malmsteen? Oh... still in a diaper I guess... I have yet to see Yngwie do something like this, he’s done pretty much everything else Ritchie has done... Lol... Only Ritchie can pull off a show like that... Long Live Ritchie !!!!

Around 2:14. Is that the riff from Book of Taliesyn? I was not familiar with that album until recently so this little cameo, if it was one, was wasted on me in previous viewings. Or it could just be Blackmore doing Blackmore-ish riff with a similar sound. [Edit: I meant the song "Listen, Learn, Read On" from the album Book of Taliesyn.]
My-O-My...... I wouldn't wanna have to follow "Deep Purple" no one can touch these guys!!!!!!! There prime was a long time ago, so people forget. Let's be serious here...... They would humiliate other groups.
Amazing Blackmore! Amazing! But The second explosion, where The Man In Black jumped back for the flames, the smoke and the shock, it has cut on the video... Sadly. Incredible the musical's band state!
The second amp's explosion it was cut. Really sadly because we could see how Blackmore didn't wait how exploding. I can't understand why the video's producer cut the amazing show.
Start off with the Wiki article, then move on to some of his interviews, there is(or will be) a book about the whole cal jam. IIRC he was mad at the cameraman because he was trying to get the camera in front of the band(middle of the stage) the whole gig, and Ritchie was constantly blocking him because he wanted the people who had paid to go to the concert to see something, he blew up the speakers because someone from the organizers said "make an amazing ending" or something along those lines.
My fave part is when Hughes goes to the front around 6:30 to check if Ritchie is still on stage. Second one has to be Lord cutting the ending to get the hell away of it ASAP. I mean it’s a great ending to the show the solo before the crash is amazing. Blackmore has always said he was really pissed off at some guy that had given him a countdown to get to stage and he couldn’t find him so he set up for the camera, tbh I find this crash more amazing that the ones during rainbow. You can feel the rage in this one.
Maybe the most wildest Ritchie moment captured on film. 👍👍
I've always considered it the single greatest equipment destruction performance ever. Nobody should have ever broken another guitar after this one!
