Mine was like this until I ran out of patience getting it to start. Attempted a new set of rings (compression was 50psi). Torqued the head with new gasket, pulled over two turns and then the engine locked up. A piece of the new gasket had sheared off somehow and got stuck between the piston and cylinder wall scoring it badly. Had a tidy up and stuck the damaged engine on ebay, sold for £50! Bought a Chinese Loncin (as spares are available) and now it'll rotavate at idle. Kept the same displacement so it's a 5hp.
I have a few of those old Briggs engines for my brott mowers. 7 hp ones. Tricky carbs and the ignition is points and hidden. I have wasted a lot of time getting them going. I fitted a used Honda to the worse of the two Brott’s.
