Mike,I’ve been trying to figure out the golf swing for decades. You have the answers. I’ve been watching your videos for months, and I subscribed to your channel. I shot a personal best round yesterday- 79! You are the man!!
Wow, all these simple tips make such a huge difference . My wrist was going up & down & not back and forth. No more cupping in the wrist & fades have gone Thank you Sir
Very powerful lesson. Only 1 correct wrist hinge. The body reacts to the swinging of the club and the timing of the hit. Mike is teaching Henry Cotton and also truth. If I think body, its over.
I would go to the range, hit 100-125 balls, go home and later felt like I was in a car wreck! This move makes my life sooo much easier. Thanks for saving my golf life in retirement!
So true. Malaska method is pretty much the same as Tiger/Butch Harmon year 2000. I saw all the videos above. I feel my hips (back swing and downswing) getting out of the way (push back and push back force). I copied Tiger's back swing. (Similar to Malaskas) when I'm abt to complete back swing, I just move a bit my upperbody to the left and get my hands down club head out Malaskas move. And voilà, L to L finish and finally I'm hitting like Tiger. Doing this steps all the other good things happen. I really don't think abt anything else than what I wrote above. Malaska is the best.
Mike You probably won't read this comment but I wanted to say "thank you" for emphasizing the key movement of the wrist is the hinge, so that you are adding club head speed when unhinging, in the direction of the target line/ ball flight. So my question is why do the vast majority of teachers seem to ignore hinge and instead emphasize wrist cock, which as far as I can see, is an action at right angles to the target line?
@@marcusoleary4518 And a year later, Mike has provided no explanation. Very disappointing since he clearly is someone who has thought deeply about the golf swing.
At 3:05, watch in slow motion, the shaft is clearly rotating, toe up at parallel to ground, to square at impact, and toe up again in follow through parallel to ground. What Mike is demonstrating is what Jim Hardy calls an RIT release for the single plane swing, but then when he hits the ball, the shaft is rotating.
Congratulation to 100K! Its not easy to obtain! You sure have a way to explain things in a simple and understandable way, which I appreciate very much.
Contrast this simple video of wrist hinge action that makes so much sense with those so-called instructors who put all the emphasis on cocking the wrists.
I have no talent accept I’ve always had a good throwing arm. I’m definitely gonna give this a shot. I’ve taken practice swings with this and seems the most natural way to swing. Keeping it athletic. Let’s do this boys and girls ⛳️
Yes. This is the best way to swing. I has less thoughts (set up cues for me still in my conversion from "normal" instruction), less tension, control given to physics rather than "how to move your this or that". Swing the thing.
Congratulations on the Subs. Feels like I’ve been listening to you forever. I still occasionally watch the golf channel VHS tape with Jim Flick “Vision, Feel, and Rhythm”. Great stuff. Very helpful.
Great stuff. One thing i m not sure about is where the wrist hinge occurs in the back swing. Some say not until u r at the top of your back swing: bearing in mind each person has a back swing distance b4 the wrist hinges????
Mike I always enjoy the info you tell us. I have been told to tuck my right elbow ( I’m right handed ) in to my side more to gain power. What’s your opinion? Thanks. Marc
Any look at golf instructions forums will quickly make us realize that golfers don't agree on much. I've seen less petty arguments and disputes at my family Thanksgiving dinners. But we can agree that a good impact position has the hands leading the shaft and clubhead. So however fast you swing the clubhead you better be swinging the hands and handle quicker. Personally I focus on swinging the grip in sync with my rotating hips. The club shift is a constant and one of the few laws of consistency in the game of golf other than the stationary ball. Yes there is some torquing of the shaft but for all intents and purposes its a constant. So by focusing on the hand swing and path simply following my hip turn im able to avoid casting and clubhead throw away which causes me all kinds of issues. It fells like a smooth connection in my swing. Not the connection where my arms are locked in too tightly to my torso and I feel bound up but just more synchronization between my hands and body. The clubhead is always lagging in this scenario and I get into a very good open impact position. Just a thought that works for me. I also no longer feel the need to kill the ball. I definitely swing fast but no harder and faster than I can swing my hands. Much better balance of myself and also the balance of the club during the swing.
Excellent Sir. But but that action you state, doesn’t it make the left wrist sort of look like a scoop action at impact ? If we do the bowed fashion look like the gold world states then the wrists can’t perform your way ??.
Mike, what happens when you come into impact and you are in a stuck position? You have to roll the club face, don’t you? Therefore, you cannot work the hands the way you suggest. This is what I find. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks.
Hello, great vid!! Can you tell me why, when I swing faster with driver, the ball is low and left? But, when I swing slower, the ball is high and right?? Thanks
Feel like this video led me astray. The idea is right through impact, but without that context I tried to keep that trail hand squared to my swing arc too far on the way back and through. Result was improper wrist hinge and no speed. I’ve had much more success forgetting about “wrist only works in throwing motion” and allowing a little more rotation in wrists and forearms. I’d even point to the 3:00 mark of this video- the hand action he deonstrates without the club does not seem to match when he actually hits a ball
The right wrist action is correct throughout the swing. But what happens halfway through the backswing is the trail arm rotates in the shoulder (as it is a ball and socket joint). There’s no forearm rotation and the trail wrist is still in full extension. The idea is to then allow the arm to rotate back again in the downswing to get you back to the little throwing arc that Mike was demonstrating here.
Agree with the right hand action, most golfers over 14hcp should work on it and get it first,if like most they are right handed playing right. But it is the ability to get onto the left side that gets you down to 7hcp and if you can use the left side even lower!
I get at least 20 yards more swinging the club with my hands than belly whipping it with my hips or driving with my feet or legs or turning my torso/shoulders. They all come into play but in support of the hands swing the club. My ball contact is also much better than with the other methods which may account for some of the extra distance.
If you're rolling over during the downswing, look at your backswing, odds are you're not taking the club back square, you're rolling in the backswing and compensating in the downswing
My biggest issue with this when do you let your wrist go? And no matter how square my face is to the ball it still fades due to the up/down tilt of the wrist.
Congrats from Germany! Trying to follow your approach is working fine for the irons! But Mike, why do I tend to push the long irons ad woods? Any thought/tip on that issue? Wrong arc? Again many thanks for your content as my handicap is dropping nicely after dialling into your technique!
Hand action looks simple without a club. When you hold a club though it's harder to reproduce that same feeling with a grip running through your hand. That's why the club face gets manipulated.
Better add in some shoulder turn... you cannot get an inside out arc without getting the front shoulder to rotate back and under the chin...*backswing*-- then getting the back shoulder to swing and rotate through the strike zone as you swing forward, down, and through the strike...( the SHOULDERS are the LAST point of connection of the fingers, then hands, then arm bones and elbows to the BODY itself... the body will pretty much move in tandem with the shoulders because it "has to") The actual amount of addition of the wrists cocking or uncocking to impact is kind of "optional" and secondary.... as in adding feel to the impact... but, all in all, in my view, shoulder swing is the heart of a good golf swing....(look again at your own video here and watch your shoulders..)
Hi there! I love the channel. Have you ever done a video about clearing the hips to help with early extension? I want my belt buckle to be facing target at impact. Think Morikawa. Any drills?
Hi there! Mike has discussed this on the site, here's one video where he discussed clearing your hips, but there are several more if you use the search. www.malaskagolf.com/videos/ask-mike-body-motion-fire-your-hips
There is a video with Mike and Eric Cogorno that talks of lead and trail hip movement as a linear force. Should be an easy search. Along with the release technique in this video, it’s an absolute must watch.
Once your brain understands what the "downswing" is, your motions getting natural and athletic. The word downswing is missleading (in my point of view) cause the swing to the ball is a underhand throw which goes UP. If you try to hit down to the ball, you will never have it.
Have to point out that what you're demonstrating with your right hand motion is clearly not what you're doing when swinging the club. Just look at 3:05 in the video. This may be what you feel, but not what is actually occurring. Maintaining vs throwing away right wrist flexion is not a minor issue. You clearly are maintaining more flexion.
How does this promote forward shaft lean??? I could see this promoting a scoop or thin shots. This action should promote a slowing down at the point of impact...It goes against what every good teacher says.
If you listen to what Mike says, you can try for years on getting shaft lean and you won’t get any better! You will get worse. Pro’s spend more time on the range than you spend at work. Just saying! Mike is a great teacher!
I'm a 2 handicap and hit more balls than u do in 2 years in one season. As a former PGA member, this makes no sense!!! U never know who you're speaking to !!! So b careful
I agree, Mike is simplifying the hand action too much. There is also wrist cocking and arm rotation in the release. Different players have different amounts of each depending on grip and wrist position in the downswing. The right hand is not square to the swing plane through release as Mike suggests. My own belief (retired, disabled UK PGA pro) is that forward shaft lean is a myth, it just happens in any good swing. Many modern players have more because they rotate their shoulders so fast into the follow through instead of just allowing the momentum of club and arms to pull them there. This is why so many pros are getting back trouble so young (Woods, Morikawa, Zalatoris). Vardon, Jones, Snead, Nicklaus all had slight fsl at impact, all had free-flowing swings so I do agree with Mike that the body should follow the hands (and club). I ruined my back at age 33 copying Lee Trevino. Look after your spine.
Hi Hiram! My swing speed has immediately increased with this wrists motion. I say immediately, no need to hit 1 million balls on the range. Concerning good teachers, who is a great teacher? My belief is that a great teacher is the one who finds the key and the words to make you get better. Malaska, Cogorno, have these skills. You can also try Stack and Tilt , if the pro knows how to communicate he will be a great teacher. I’m not sure the majority of pros teaching the same method are necessarily right. Not wrong but not always right. However, I can understand it makes some feeling safe by doing a unique golf swing…
At 3:05, your palm is facing in front of you, not downwards as you claim at 2:33. You are not doing what you are teaching because it would be impossible. If it were, the face of the club and elbow at the top of the swing would be facing downward making the weirdest chicken wing. Just try it. What you teach simple does not happen :( And no, one does not throw a baseball like you said. The kinetic chain is a succession of movement which go from the large articulations to the small ones. The small parts always follow the large parts.
