The stereotypes got us Vietnamese people stuck with pop songs or war songs but Firaxis have chosen it correctly that is the iconic folk music. Respect that. Tradition is tradition.

I don't know about pop songs but we mostly just know Fortunate Son. But thats more reflective on we americans and our experience.

I love reading comments like this!
Culture in main stream media is always such a dicey thing; just using the western world feels narrow-minded and ignorant, but slapping in a few exotic faces and names can be read as appropriation.
With this soundtrack, I always feel like the composer put some serious work into doing the countries justice, but then what do I know about Sumerian (Iranian) / Egyptian / Vietnamese /Ethiopian culture?
      So, thanks for your comment!

Vietnam (Lý Kéo Chài; Trống Cơm)
    0:00 - Ancient Era
3:54 - Medieval Era (with Lý Giăng Câu)
    8:08 - Industrial Era
    12:39 - Atomic Era
    About these Pieces:
Lý Kéo Chài, Trống Cơm and Lý Giăng Câu are all traditional folk songs from Vietnam, with Lý Kéo Chài and Lý Giăng Câu from southern Vietnam and Trống Cơm from the North. Lý Kéo Chài is normally sung by fishermen when pulling a catch out of the water. The regular 2/4 beat serves to help the fishermen pull the net in time with the song, much like how crew on a ship would sing sea shanties when performing certain tasks. Trống Cơm on the other hand tells the story about a broken romance, but the finer details are still debated (see Enbe Fyuk's and other comments below for more details on Trống Cơm and Lý Giăng Câu).
Most traditional Vietnamese music is heavily influenced by Chinese music, but as well as Korean, Japanese and even Mongolian to some extent. Music in Vietnam is also very diverse, with certain emphasis on the spiritual effect of music. Music has even evolved to reflect Vietnamese struggle for independence, with northern Red Music during the struggle against France and later the Vietnam War with southern Yellow Music arising between the 50s to the 70s.
    Lý Kéo Chài ("Tow Fishing"):
Gió lên rồi căng buồm cho khoái
Gác chèo lên ta nướng khô khoai hờ hơ!
Tình tang tang tính tính tang
    Khoan hỡi khoan hò
Bỏ ghe mà nghiêng ngửa ớ ơ là hò
    Không ai chống chèo
Không ai chống chèo ơ hò ơ hò là hò ơ hơ
Trống Cơm ("Listen to the Drums"):
Tình bằng có cái trống cơm
    Khen ai khéo vỗ
Ố mấy bông mà nên bông
Ố mấy bông mà nên bông
Một bầy tang tình con xít
Một bầy tang tình con xít

The first song used in this track is Lý kéo chài, a folk song native to Southern Vietnam sung by fishermen so they can pull up the net to the rhythm. The second one is Trống cơm, the name itself is a unique instrument in Northern Vietnam. This folk song is largely about a broken romance but the meaning of the finer details are still being debated. Some say it's about a generic tale of a woman being separated from her lover, some say it highlights the pain of women bearing children out of wedlock. The third one I honestly have no idea. I can tell it starts at 7:04 and the melody is somewhat familiar but I can't really put my finger on it.
Edit: After having my tone-deafness pointed out, the third song is indeed Lý giăng câu, a folk song native to southwestern Vietnam. The song portrays a conversation between a wife, coyly questioning where her husband was going this late at night, while the husband insisted that he was only going fishing, although "giăng câu" literally means casting the hook so there may be some double entendre at foot here.

The Civilization VI music team really nailed it this time. I was wondering which piece of obscure, generic Southeast Asian piece they're gonna use for Vietnam this time, but they chose Lý kéo chài - a popular Southern theme, and Trống Cơm - the most well known Northern tune, and smash them together in such a masterful manner. I would have loved to hear
The Ancient theme is a t'rưng (bamboo xylophone) solo, which isn't exactly Vietnamese in nature, but not too improbable, since the Vietnamese probably used something similar before the Chinese invasions and influx. The Medieval seems to be a guzheng/cello/drum piece, but the style of guzheng trills here is distinctively đàn tranh, not just generic guzheng similar to China and Japan. Then the signature Geoff Knorr's Industrial Theme strikes, bam! and then the familiar tune of Lý kéo chài evolves into a more sophisticated đàn tranh handling, accompanied with the Industrial french horns and string ensemble. The handling of Trống cơm is also masterful, one that makes me feel like taking up đàn tranh lessons, and the dash of flutes here and there is simply delightful.
And the Atomic theme. Ah, where do I start? People have sung praises of the Atomic themes so many times already. Synthetic instruments and đàn tranh, why not? And the signature 'sustained piano and drumming'. It truly gives off the vibe of 'sustainable rice paddy fields in space'.
However, I was expecting something more. Haven't heard đàn bầu - Vietnam's one and truly unique instrument, anywhere. If it was featured in Ancient or Medieval I'd have really cried.

    • @tonkinthehanoian1843

    • @sergeyrafirudov
      @sergeyrafirudov 3 года назад +4

@@longchautran6568 I'd like to say that while t'rưng is from a region that belongs to the state of Vietnam, claiming that it is part of the mainstream Vietnamese culture as demonstrated in the rest of the arrangement is little short of cultural appropriation, not unlike a white American person claiming that Native American chants are American and therefore part of their mainstream heritage. that musical instrument belongs to the peoples of Tây Nguyên.

    • @longchautran6568
      @longchautran6568 3 года назад +19

@@sergeyrafirudov I strongly disagree on dragging the phrase cultural appropriation. By bringing in T'rưng, I am immensely joyful about the unity that is being promoted to a wider audience. It is not new that such performance exists and, while it is not as popular as others instrument may have had, there would be no chance for it to intergrade into a mainstream if it were never be given a chance to begin with. So many things in Vietnamese culture as you identify with today do have some parts of it coming from the integration of many kind. Think of Huế citadel, Lý dragon, white elephant causus beli in 15th cen, Âu Cơ - Lạc Long Quân, and the different dialects of Vietnamese spoken in different regions. Give it a chance. A chance did this soundtrack give.
And that example of yours is quite inappropriate, while the interactions might not be as much as Cham or Khmer, people from the Tây Nguyên region has always been a part of an ecosystem economically and culturally exchange of Indochina as a whole. It is unthinkable that a center piece for of the whole Indochina can be the equivalent to your Native American narrative.

Like Gran Colombia, this music really caught my attention from the initial pre-First Look announcement video. It really captures that sort of Far East Asian style (as best as I know it, since I really know next to nothing about Vietnamese music), in a huge and orchestral way. The Medieval track is especially cool; often it feels like the Medieval tracks have a melody over a drone, which works fine enough, but here the Medieval European strings really off the Vietnamese instruments back and forth in a really cool way. This is likely to become my favorite Medieval track in the soundtrack overall.

This music is so beautiful. One of the best. You can tell how it tells the tale of the Viet.
It begins in a very minimalistic style, evoking the many jungle dwelling Nanman tribes south of the Yangtze, then procedes into the Chinese influenced medieval and industrial themes, really showing the struggle with and against Chinese colonialism and culture. The triumphal moments there really evoke the high points for the Viet, like throwing the Mongols back and how their culture still endures, despite centuries of living next to China.
The last one is a bit mournful at times in comparison, as if evoking the French period and the Vietnam War.
    Firaxis did an amazing job.

Yep I WAS RIGHT, VIETNAM’S MUSIC IS 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Aside from already being music suitable for a scene of being Asian kick-ass, honestly this music gives me the vibes of.... it’s as if I’m in and witnessing a festival in Vietnam! (Especially the Industrial and Atomic versions)
SIDE NOTE: I can definitely also sense some elements that are also present in China and Khmer’s themes, quite awesome. I guess it’s also because Vietnam borders them both which is understandable.

Well China swallowed half of Vietnam's land and Vietnam swallowed half of Khmer's land. So you are right :)

I feel so bad that Vietnam was screwed so badly by two world powers in the 20th century and in the 21st is getting screwed by their certain other big neighbor.

Actually she was barely recorded in history, both Chinese and Vietnamese history. Most of the things we know about her is from a book written in early 20th century, 1700 years after her time: 清化紀勝
