Took me 40 years to know about this. In 2 days time it will be 186 years since the signing... wow.. With social media so widely used i think it would be only right to share wide and far to let people know the history of He Wakaputanga. This is our history.
@18:20 'the Treaty is not a treaty of cession. It's a day to celebrate the opening up of NZ, to other people, to live here, according to Maori values'.
10:00 Sovereignty was *declared* over the whole of NZ a few months after the signing of the Waitangi Treaty by Hobson. It was on this basis that the Brits could exert force against unsigned chiefs/ tribes [where the musket wars were still smouldering]. Everything else is just nominal sovereignty [whether the confederation or the Treaty. This showed good will to the chiefs and also appeased the humanitarians back in London. All radical language is based on the humanitarian language of the day [in contrast to the practicality of politics and nation building]. Radical language, as is found here, is ironically based on this European way of thinking/ ideology.... which is increasingly going mainstream.
Around rhe world May 1 is celebrated as Labour Day but in NZ we celebrate it as Oct 28. So this Labour Day celebration oversahdows or distracts from the Whakaputanga. I will forevermore commemoraate Oct 28 as Whakaputanga Day.
Māori to quote the words of Lord Normanby Standing Orders of 1939. "Whose title to the soil and to the Sovereignty of New Zealand is indisputable and has been solemnly recognized by the British Government" And, ".........the admission of Their Rights....is binding on the faith of the British Crown".
'Hmmm... we [the judges/ courts] are going to apply the laws to you'. And that's it in a nutshell folks. Power is sovereignty, sovereignty is power [Hobson *declared* sovereignty over the whole country, over signed and unsigned chiefs alike]/ Once sovereignty is established [through force of arms.. at first only a show of force], the laws are enforced.
Lord Normanby Standing Orders of 1839 (pre-emption) "Māori must not be permitted to enter into any contracts in which they might be the ignorant and unintentional authors of injuries to themselves"...To secure the observance of this Rule will be one of the first duties of their official Protector. The Crown of England entered into a Treaty of Protection with the People Māori.

Was it 30 odd chiefs that signed the Confederation of the tribes... and mostly Nga Puhi? This was instigated by Busby, the British resident, who was worried the French would declare sovereignty over the country. Unfortunately, the confederation came to nothing as the chiefs were unable to govern - even with Nga Puhi there were civil wars going on between them [the 'girls' war etc].... and they said as much to Busby. The sovereignty declared proved diplomatically useful though. The British recognized... and used this as what was to be ceded to the British with the Waitangi Tribunal. All of this is nominal though. Real actual sovereignty was *declared* over the whole country by Hobson a few months after the signing at Waitangi...
1835, the last of Iwi Maui's Mori Ori had been slaughtered by the missionary tribes of mount Egmont, toa, tama, ruanui and mutunga who were aided by two british flagship from new plymouth, but the missionaries and their colonial advisors had jumped the gun in creating their niu tireni an independant declaration that wouldn't allow them to annex Aokealoa under international treaty laws so they falsified the waitangi treaty to cover up the slaughter and genocidal mass murder of Aokealoa's first nation Iwi Maui and delete their existence from Aokealoa plus denationalize their 1200 years of history belonging to Aokealoa. In 1839 the colonial invaders and their missionary cohorts bestowed upon their Tuamotu indoctrinated overstayers the title nz maoris an identity designed to impersonate those they had murdered. Tuamotu tupuna were of Tahitian, Rarotongan and Micronesian descent.
