    Kyoko is often depicted "drowning " or suffocating under a body of water with Sayaka so that she wouldn't have to die alone. Sayaka's witch form is a mermaid, mermaids are usually known to lure people in with their beautiful singing but in this case with sayaka its a orchestra, the main instrument is a violin which makes this even more painful for her. They then proceed to drag their victims under and kill them by drowning and suffocation. Kyokos witch form is a candle lit flame. Candles can't go in water without dying because water and flames don't mix obviously. Also Kyokos witch name is Ophelia, like Ophelia who drowned In one of shakespeares play ending up in a similar fate as sayaka. Also, Octavia is both a reference to Octave, or "Eighth note" following Sayaka's witch musical motiff, and the fact that Sayaka turns into a witch specifically in episode 8. interesting

    • @finnjager1510
      @finnjager1510 2 года назад +229

      Also a referece to the 8th book of Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid, not to mention she has a literal siren as head, which only adds to show her desperation. In the same episode it is also hinted that if Sayaka/Octavia is a mermaid, Kyoko is an unicorn which makes alot of sense.

    SPOILER and a bit of fun fact
    In some of Oktavia’s attacks or moves looks like a black and red human sillouette is taking shape and then melting. Maybe is a reference to Sayaka losing her humanity as she became fully a witch and the only way of salvation is finishing her

    rewatching madoka since the new movie should come out this year so yeah this comments a bit late to the party BUT
    ik it’s so well known at this point but the symbolism of the mermaids tail is so awesome dude
    she spent her wish on the guy she liked and in the end she lost her “prince” to another woman. not only that but she gave up her physical body in exchange for that wish much like the little mermaid as well. she realized she could never go back after making a foolish wish and being left with a body that “no one could love” she fell to despair and turned into a witch. it just feels so genius to me as madoka magica always reminded me of grim fairy tales and the art always reminded me of picture books for children. of course there’s so much more symbolism to her witch design but i feel that the little mermaid symbolism always stood out to me and tied it all together so nicely

    I really, really love not just the song, but the visual scene as well cuz it manages to cram so much cool imagery into a working harmonic whole (just like a symphony, hah!)
    First there is of course the tale of the Little Mermaid as primary inspiration for Sayaka's story, but I think that part's well known, so no point in mentioning that. Then there is the armour and wheels in her witch form's design, very reminiscient of the Chariot in Tarot, which is nice since it really suits her strong will and determined personality - contrasted at the same time by another Tarot image which is the three of swords in her heart-shaped neck frill and the crown of swords above it (albeit that's five of them instead of three).
    But thirdly and imo most interestingly, I believe her witch form is called Oktavia in reference to Emperor Nero's second wife Claudia Octavia - it's historically very likely that neither of the two really loved the other in their arranged marriage, so that part does not quite fit, but Kyousuke being a violinist who uncaringly carried on fiddling despite Sayaka "burning herself to the ground" so to speak is very reminiscient of the image of Nero that was popularised by the Roman historians after his death (which however thankfully isn't quite accurate in all likelyhood)

      @Nero_Karel Год назад +4

      @@Lara-vo6rp One more visual thing I noticed is how much Oktavia's shadow against the backdrop of red theatre seats reminds me of a fire, so maybe that's also part of the Nero-connection, but maybe I'm reading too far into it at that point lol
      Either way it's safe to say this show's objectively a masterpiece

    • @Lara-vo6rp
      @Lara-vo6rp Год назад +5

      @@Nero_Karel No no keep going I think thats pretty cool! :) maybe it kinda does since it does coerrelate to kyoko since her witch form is a candle with flame since kyoko is usually depicted throughout the show as "drowning" along with sayaka so she wouldn't die alone. More interesting lore is that sayaka's witch form is a mermaid, throughout history they were known to lure in fishermen with their beautiful singing same as sayaka but in this case with a orchestra to lure more victims into her witch lair, proceeding to after luring victims in they drown them similar to kyoko since she's a candle as a witch her name is ophelia, Its a reference to shakespeares play about ophelia drowning in the same fate as sayaka. Another interesting fact is octavia is also a reference to octave or eighth note similar to sayakas witch music motiff and she also turns into a witch specifically at episode 8. And apparently somehow during the scene when she throws wheels at madoka you can slightly see sayakas silhouette in the wheels

    it all really gives off as if ur drowning in despair and watch all of it from afar with a sad tune but wanting to get revenge at the same time. I really like it. the ribbon on Octavia’s neck shows a reference of madoka Kaname maybe. It also gives off a knight theme kind of like of how her normal magical girl outfit is. maybe I’m overthinking on this one but on her accessory in her magical girl outfit she has FF as a hair-clip which means super loud in music. could this represent why this music is so loud and filled with despair? also, as we look in her witch collection cards we see Hitomi Shizuki which looks like dolls or maybe even puppets there’s an obvious reason why hitomi is there. It’s not really visible in the anime but Octavia has a mermaid tail, it’s known that it can lure people in with there music almost as it’s a siren. this is something I also found
    The name Oktavia refers to the word octave (the eight interval of a scale in music). This name reflects Sayaka's attachment to the musician Kyosuke
    this is all just a speculation
