Avatar was... IS, my favorite show of all time, it was just absolutely brilliantly written, voiced and animated, every episode can be considered good, even... even the great divide... in it's own special way I guess.
So American Dragon: Jake Long for a possible future reaction series? you obviously need it, pretty good show in its own right. Though try to watch in production order, not air order to get the best experience.

Avatar is still my fav western Cartoon of all time due to many factors. So it really sadden me to see one of my fav writers (Josh Hamilton) from this series to not do well in MLP. I honestly don't know what happened to him. Soizin's Comet is my fav Avatar episode too with Boiling Rock (written by Josh Hamilton) being my 2nd fav. Fire Book was my fav season too with most of my fav episodes from that season.
I honestly didn't like the series finale. Learning energy-bending from the lion turtle and getting the avatar state back via random rock to the back was just too much of a deus ex machina for me. I can appreciate wanting to end a family show without killing the main villain, but as the comics show, taking away Ozai's bending didn't really solve anything. Even without it he has loyalists who think he better fit for the throne, and regularly try to either undermine or kill Zuko and his family. Hell, even locked away in a cell and powerless he still can't keep his ego in check. I was more interested in Sokka, Toph, and Suki's mission and the White Lotus' attack on Ba Sing Sei than the "big showdown". The Agni Kai was....ok, I guess, if a little anticlimactic. The biggest problem with how the Ozai fight ends though, is that it wasn't a solution for the greater good or to send a message, it was only there so Aang would have an excuse not to kill. The entire scene with him talking to the past Avaters only supports that as all of them, even Yang Chen (the airbender), tell him that he can't be so caught up in find a solution that makes him comfortable as his duty is to the people. Again, it's a family show, so I can cut it some slack, but the way it's framed just makes it look too much like Aang is putting what he wants above what would be best in the long run.

The Storm definitely deserves the number 2 spot. I've rarely seen hero-villain-duality done this well.
But there are so many amazing episodes. Crossroads of destiny did it really well and was more entertaining.
