  • High Inergy sadly seem very forgotten today but deserve to be remembered for some very pleasant disco/R&B records very much in the vein of other 70s girl groups like The Three Degrees and Sister Sledge's works that were more successful. Sisters Barbara and Vernessa Mitchell (the main singers) and their friends Linda Howard and Michelle Rumph hailed from Pasadena, California, and were discovered by Berry Gordy's sister Gwen Gordy Fuqua who got them signed to Motown's sub-label Gordy Records in 1977 where they were hailed as "the new Supremes" (as The Supremes had finally disbanded in 1976). Their group name was even adapted from The Supremes' 1976 album High Energy, but spelled with an I (explained as a contraction of Inner Energy). They got off to a very promising start with their debut single You Can't Turn Me Off (In The Middle Of Turning Me On), written by the same writers Pam Sawyer & Marilyn McLeod who were responsible for Diana Ross' 1976 hit Love Hangover. It had been offered to Miss Ross first who did not want it, and Millie Jackson then recorded it as an album track on her 1976 album Lovingly Yours. High Inergy's version, released in August 1977, reached #2 on Billboard's R&B charts and #12 in the Pop Charts, although it was only a minor hit in the UK (released in October) where it reached #52. The second single Love Is All You Need was also a cover version. It was another cut that Diana Ross had turned down, so Tata Vega recorded it first on her 1976 debut album. High Inergy's version was issued as a single in January 1978 (in UK March 1978) and hit a respectable #20 on the R&B charts but stalled at #89 on the Pop Charts.
The album peaked at #28 on Billboard's Pop Charts and #6 on the R&B charts and provides for some very pleasant listening. Among the songwriters who contributed material was a young James Ingram - he would of course have his big breakthrough in the early 80s when he duetted with Patti Austin on Baby Come To Me, and with Michael McDonald on Yah Mo Be There a.o. Turnin' On remains the group's only commercial success. Let Me Get Close To You was another Diana Ross rejection. Over the next six years they would release a further 7 albums on the Gordy label, proof that Motown had a lot of hope for the ladies, but unfortunately they never landed another hit single and therefore the albums sold poorly. By the end of 1983 they had quietly disbanded.

Funny thing is. Some song in this album is sound like they are screaming and shouting to each other than singing. But it's actually good 😄 Very fun, lively, high energy. They're very unique to me 🙂
It's always laugh when heard this one & and love to hear it again.
